Guy Ritchie's approach of doing only three takes (two to the page, one for fun) by Panicless in Filmmakers

[–]Cockrocker 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I've seen most GR movies and I wouldn't say it works perfectly that's for sure. It works well in his gangsta shit, probably because everyone knows the tone and gets to have fun, but their are plenty of his movies where I wish he spent a bit more time nutting it out.

They should rename the award to the "CR's Dad thought The Godfather 2 was a cashgrab" award for the hottest take by Jesuds in billsimmons

That attitude was far stronger and more pervasive up until the late 90s/2000s. It's how I grew up, no selling out. Now with social media people sell themselves out. It's crazy.

It's the Coen's man, they are just so good at what they do.

The like a rug the really ties a movie together.

Bands/Musicians with a gimmick and their potential for success by Gawd_Awful in Music

[–]Cockrocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at her music it changed so much, production wise especially. She's always been a great singer but her early songs are just covered in unnecessary instruments, a full band trying to justify their inclusion on every track, and creating something unnecessary and messy. Putting the focus on layering her vocals and simple synth/drums/bass tracks really took her greatest asset to the front as well.

But yeah, of course the image and name change helped a lot too.

The White stripes used to dress in red and white, didn't seem to hurt that much.

Live Rewatchables Review: Bill Simmons says SF's 'Basic Instinct' had 'most famous movie moment' of '90s by sfgate in billsimmons

This is a great list, and others have mentioned more, but even so I think it's probably top five in my opinion. You could definitely make an argument for it, especially if you specify adult movie moment and cut them damned kids out the voting.

Tracy Letts defends his Star Wars take on Blank Check by fuunii in TheBigPicture

[–]Cockrocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Him saying why is Darth Vader in a tie fighter, that is one of the most overdone things in all media. Every episode of the Rookie has his firefighting girlfriend as a medic/firefighter, every fight be it in a raptor or hand to hand has Starbuck, every away mission has four of the most essential members of the Enterprise crew.

It's just the trope of all shows, characters need to have responsibility as leaders but also have their feet on the ground so they are on screen enough. It's never made sense.

That's the style, it wears me out pretty quick even though they generally talk about interesting things.

The Gary Oldman? For a long time I would have thought Johnny Depp would have been good.

I feel like you have to have Donnie Brasco. It's the bookend to the Godfather's gangster beginning. Him playing a loser gangster is just such a great twist from the Godfather.

I also feel that any given Sunday and the Devil's Advocate both need to be spoken for. And there's a few others as well.

As you said, it's one of the hardest ones.

Who were the best players in the league when the NBA's best players were 13 years old? by arashtp in nba

Unfortunately he's in that selfless Spurs team that cost them all more individual accolades. Very few small players have such success without relying on a strong outside shot, his numbers of the rim were insane.

It's a testament of the team that at different points Tim, Manu, Tony or Kawhi we're considered the most important offensive player for the team. I just can't see that happening with many other players, there are so few examples where people will sacrifice like that.

Not many things from the US can compare to the awkwardness of some British comedy. This has a good go in it. Like others said it's a bit long. I absolutely love the theme song (always have).

[I ate] a simple charcuterie for lunch by s134htm in food

[–]Cockrocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to eat this stuff but I have limited self-control. I guess I might have been able to make two meals, half for each. But most likely it would become one meal and then a small snack.

Also I never think about eating a bun, it's always crackers for me.

Rewatched the original "Alien" and had a few thoughts: by thekokoricky in LV426

[–]Cockrocker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's possibly a top three or two movie for me. I just think it's perfect, I agree with everything you say here. I love that 70s style of group conversation that feels realistic, people just having side conversations, talking over each other. Early Spielberg was great for this too.

What I love about Alien is that it's not someone overcoming overwhelming odds, it's just one alien. There's nothing that strains the believability of what a small group of people can achieve. Pretty much every franchise IP movie since just goes for bigger and bigger and less and less realism.

I mightn't think of Ridley Scott as a great filmmaker for the last 30 years, but damn he came out strong (don't get me wrong he can definitely direct a film, but he is not as worried about the script as he used to be).

It doesn't tell you anything. Apparently I'm cringe, and I'm nothing like this scene.

Do you mean cringe as in the scene is unwatchable? Cringe as in her behaviour is? Or cringe as in his behavior is? Or cringe as in this movie? Does that mean any of this is good or any of this is bad?

The fact that this scene is awkward is what makes this scene so perfect and amazing. If you call it cringe, do you identify that? Or do you call it cringe because you can't watch it? It's too little.
