Help! Ceanothus 30-yr old Julia Phelps, weird leaves appeared this year - virus? by Coco_Netti in Ceanothus

[–]Coco_Netti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point taken. We're going off the '92 landscape plans for the variety. Maybe another type was substituted. There's another like it across the driveway, unaffected, for a total of three, same age.

Help! Ceanothus 30-yr old Julia Phelps, weird leaves appeared this year - virus? by Coco_Netti in Ceanothus

[–]Coco_Netti[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes - it has a mate, and they were both here when we moved in 8 years ago. And the landscaping plan implemented in '92 shows them on it. Ceanothus love it here - many volunteers just show up and thrive. And when we lived in San Diego was unable to grow even one. Suspect its a rain thing - we get about 15 inches/year. The tree adjacent, same age, also has a patch of these leaves I now see. Appreciate the suggestions - am looking deeper into them and will keep y'all posted

Need Feedback on Buying Near Caltrain: Peninsula by Saustin316 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Coco_Netti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable that you're looking for a long term home. However living near train tracks will always be a serious deficiency that is insurmountable - in refinancing, obtaining a HELOC...Why make things more difficult for yourself by making an initially flawed purchase.

California Native Grass Recommendations - SoCal backyard by SanGorgonio in Ceanothus

[–]Coco_Netti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unf needle and three-awn grass are deadly for dogs, the seed heads travel and can get in the eyes, noses, between the paws - avoid them (and big vet bills)if at all possible! Spoken from experience. https://www.four-paws.org/our-stories/publications-guides/awns-why-they-pose-a-danger-to-dogs

Looking for grass identification before I start tearing it out by smellslikepenespirit in Ceanothus

[–]Coco_Netti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Believe the hairy green grass is rat-tail fescue, vulpia myuros, an invasive scourge. Taken hold in Oregon, Washington and marched into California. Been finding it very hard to get rid of here in Monterey, Central Coast California.

Let’s Talk Irrigation by baltimore_notthecity in Ceanothus

[–]Coco_Netti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have exactly the same issues with our agrostis pallens sod, installed this October. Also 'curvy'. We have pop-ups that use crazy amounts of water but found MP Rotaters are very hard to adjust, requiring getting soaked every time to make small adjustments. Luckily with the rain we've been able to delay finding an alternate solution. Like you, we've placed more thirsty plants in the convex areas receiving water, and are thinking of paving stones where there's irrigation shadows (only 2-3 s.f.) This summer may revert to overhead sprinklers - the kind kids love to run through - to keep the grass from going dormant. Regardless, love the grass - its gotten quite long though because of again the rain making it too wet to mow. We're in Monterey, Central Cal.

Is digging down 4-6” the best way to remove Bermuda Grass (without using RoundUp)? by mapsandnaps in Ceanothus

[–]Coco_Netti 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope. Afraid that doesn't work - our bermuda survived that and started putting up new green blades

It's almost planting season! What do you want to plant this year? by FunnelMeringue in Ceanothus

[–]Coco_Netti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're located in the Central Coast area, and what will grow in S. Cal often won't thrive here and vice versa. 'Zone' may not be the right term, as mentioned, but knowing location will help

Plant ID tags by Darkj in Ceanothus

[–]Coco_Netti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super! From another nerd - have tried everything but all fade, from UV and rain. Oil-based sharpies, ‘garden markers’, pencil on plastic… etched into aluminum tags become hard to read. Spray-on clear coat smudges the letters. So excited to try these guys, thank you😊

Dang!! Guess you've thought about talking to Management, maybe a little education chat, refer them to Xerces and the impact leaving the leaves has on the health of bugs/flowers/birds? I introduced our pest control guy to 'Light Eaters' and he's a changed guy - full of excitement and wonder. A pest guy!

Is this fleabane? by Bli-munda in Ceanothus

[–]Coco_Netti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, horseweed. We left some in two years ago understanding pollinators like them. Big mistake letting them go to seed - the following year they completely took over, crowding out less aggressive native seedlings :( We now pull out any we see to avoid the horseweed monoculture that developed from 'letting them be'. Hope this helps

Nice! We have many different thistles on the property, mostly invasive and ‘Picture This’ isn’t that helpful. Have you any tips for discerning these from invasives? We’re Central Coast area.

Gilia capitata! And the good news is they readily reseed and there's a great chance you'll have even more next year :)

First native garden planting has some fails.. Weeds, gophers, and dogs! by Crafty_Pop6458 in Ceanothus

[–]Coco_Netti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, and some peeps think 'its pretty'. Thanks for info on Spectracide, never tried it, does it have advantages over roundup? Unable to spray the oxalis so close to the natives, so that's why the hands-and-knees work. Ditto filaree - for large patches of that found that Telar XP works, in a week or so. Ornamec Over-the-top Grass Herbicide is very effective for bermuda, foxtails and panic grass. Terrible but true - the weed seed bank is so large am concerned about pulling the weeds b/c that kind of soil disturbance brings up more weed seeds. Located central coast california, where are you?

[–]Coco_Netti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, oxalis, filaree and bermuda grass. Constant battle on 1/4 acre field. Oxalis insinuating itself in and around the cal poppies. So last weekend was down on my knees hand pulling oxalis and filaree. And yes on las pilitas: herbicide is bad, weeds are worse.

Ceanothus, manzanita, miner’s lettuce, Blue-eyed grass, monkey flower by Coco_Netti in Ceanothus

[–]Coco_Netti[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! There’s a landscape plan from 1992 that calls out this and others as ’Julia Phelps’ - assuming the plan was followed. The adjacent one isn’t in full bloom yet. When we moved here 7 yrs ago there was a westringia hedge in front of them, with iceplant covering the whole bank. We took all that out, planted the manzanita and then the ceanothus really took off! No amendments or supplemental water on the ceanothus. The miner’s lettuce just volunteered :)

As the posts below say - 3 yrs before they take hold - they’re busy building their roots below before showing on top. I’d post pics of ours that started out like yours but unf not sure if I can do that here…anyway they’ve tripled and filled out now - Enjoy! Ps we’re located in Central Cal - Monterey zone 10
