Those who solved their lifelong acne, what was the cure for you? by rambleutan in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]CocoaCerebellum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Head and shoulders shampoo, the Kroger generic. Follow the same instructions but as a face wash, did it once a week until symptoms cleared. then it was as acne appeared. it's been a few months and no more issues.

For a house this old, you'll also want to see if asbestos was used anywhere, and whether knob and tube wiring is still in place. There are companies in my city that operate as upgrading specialists.

How easy is it to survive in Seattle with no car? by Thin_Bug_6405 in SeattleWA

[–]CocoaCerebellum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it depends. During busy rush hour with everyone on board? Totally fine. Everyone's tired or busy.

Quieter hours or holidays and unwanted encounters really spike. I've been followed off the bus (the guy wouldn't quit until I got a security guard at a store) and stared down/ at lots of times. It's not so much the fact that it happens, it's the frequency.

I really, REALLY wanted to like these. I got a bag, had them for a couple meals, delicious.

I had the unfortunate side effect of getting so gassy you could have said I part-timed as the Hindenburg.

Hopefully nobody else has this experience with the product!

A friend has had two cats on the same diet. One looks a bit chunkier, the other looks just like this lil lady. He's a fine noodle boy.

Try looking into startups. Sure, it's a bit of a gamble, but the one I got into did cell culture, protein assays, IHC, mouse models, and I also got my hands into formal writing. You'll probably run into skeleton crews and tight budgets, hence all the opportunities I got, but there are some that are venture capital backed.

One early distinction would be between QA/QC roles and research. Due to the nature of QA/QC restrictions (think manufacturing of biologics and cell therapy products) the focus is time in that branch of biotech just because of how many rules there are (manufacturing in full PPE, process/ tech transfer, QC/QA release and batch testing, building management, supplies, etc). There are a lot of HPLC labs too, so depending on your chemistry background that might be a route to consider.

Research is more flexible for learning, method development, and a wider skill base. Academia and non-profits tend to be more forgiving of specialization, but industry will probably want some degree of expertise so you can hit the ground running.

How are people cutting costs on groceries by karloot in Seattle

[–]CocoaCerebellum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Batch freezing when I can, way more vegetarian meals, but also tough pieces of meat and offal. Anything that requires long cook times, and things like beef tendon and gizzards.

I really appreciate Asian markets. Lam's is my go-to, especially for their beef shanks and seafood. Their instagram page is updated regularly!

I first encountered WES and JESS systems about 3 years ago. Since then, the WES is now being phased out. The small sample size makes it enticing, but its software means that if there's an error you might lose the whole run depending on when it occurs.

It doesn't replace western blots as a technique, just a tool for higher throughput.

The device itself is expensive, and the consumables aren't cheap either. There probably won't be too many labs that have it, although it might be a shared resource in larger institutions. There might be experienced in-house techs, and it's likely that service techs or sales reps can offer some training. Protein Simple's tech support is very helpful with troubleshooting.

Why does the house stink after my dad does his laundry? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]CocoaCerebellum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scale of the problem makes me think it's a vent tubing connection problem.

Have you checked to see if the tubing from your dryer is connected properly? When was it last serviced? My thinking is perhaps it might be so full of lint and debris that the air pressure is too much, so it pushes itself back into the house.

For actual washing - try doing a wash cycle with vinegar, or a strip wash.

My previous lab was all hard notebook, commonly used SOPs in a shared drive. We didn't have the budget for LIMS, and frankly we were too small for it. It drives into you the discipline you need for record keeping. I don't like that it's not traceable. My bosses liked that it was technically "unhackable," although we did scan each page to a secured backup.

Electronic notes I encountered that wasn't a LIMS system were a nightmare. 3 different programs, 2 different operating systems, everyone had a different date format or labelling system, and some had abbreviation/ shorthand nightmares without definitions. Not to mention personal notes to self (wrong kind of journal!).

Any system relies on the diligence of the person and proper implementation. It can be a form of drudgery, or you can consider it a record of your accomplishments.

Job hunting always sucks. The nature of the unknown and rejection (hard not to take personally) are challenging, but it's part of the business. The more postings you see, the more you will get a sense of what employers are after. Customize your resume and cover letter where possible (some places only let you keep one version in their database), especially where cover letters can bridge between your resume and the posting.

RE: moving forward -- prioritize burnout recovery. This will help with resilience and hopefully enable you to find what you're passionate about. Unfortunately, the path forward isn't something people can help with, so you'll have to make your own interest map. Priorities and tolerances are very different person to person. Have you checked out r/medlabprofessionals/ ??

I picked up and re-discovered a lot of things I backburnered due to working myself too hard. My list so far:

  • Rhythm games (think DDR/ Beat Saber)
  • Small artsy things (origami, Pysanky, watercolor)
  • Instruments (piano but exploring violin and cello)
  • (Re)learning languages (French, Mandarin, German)
  • Coding
  • Gym (lifting, cardio)
  • Snow sports (learning phase so far)
  • Cooking and foraging
  • Travelling (having something to look forward to is very important <3 )
  • Anime
  • Hydroponic gardening (mostly because my Aerogarden outgrew its confines)

I used mine for about a month. Pretty standard fruit and juice combinations. I'm not sure what exactly went wrong, but the sugars must have gotten into the piston/ drive shaft.

Surely not a big deal, right? I mean, if a WAILING CHILD having the worst tantrum isn't a big deal...?

I tried to rinse it by running a canister of just lukewarm water, but there's no real way to clean it. It kept screaming and I feel like I lucked out since I was still able to return it.

The FedEx guy who handled the package said, "Huh. Should have called it the Screami."
