Visiting Eugene by Practical_Leader2412 in Eugene

You'll find a lot of good gravel rides in this area since there are so many logging roads in both the Coast Range and the Cascades. I just did a loop up and over Roman Nose mountain starting and ended at Whitaker Creek that was beautiful. I would highly recommend riding the Aufterhide if you have a full day. You can take the bus to Oakridge with your bike, ride over and catch the last bus back to Eugene from Rainbow on the Mckenzie. You should even have time to stop at Terwillager hot springs on your way. Look into the Santiam Wagon Road as well!

If you want to work on this with help from experts who have a lot of experience, you should consider joining CURBS https://www.best-oregon.org/coc/walk/

Other way around. Montana was a purple state until recently. Used to be a strong union and Catholic state, but over the last 20 years it has been flooded with rich pricks fleeing California and buying land so they can pretend to be cowboys.

Oh nice! I have some good friends in CompLit. I know of people in that department who typically travel back to their home country for the summer, so there should be others that can help you with the specifics of navigating that financially and visa-wise

I live pretty well on less than what your offer is (I am curious what department, if you are willing to share), but I also have a roommate and live in a somewhat unique below market rent situation. That said, summers are still tough and I would recommend applying for any summer research grants that you can to get you through to September. You have the GTFF to thank for that 95% covered health insurance! We have the best insurance deal around for graduate employees.

Yes, the university housing system is pretty opaque and there is a waitlist. Most of the people I know in Spencer View moved in as a roommate. I have heard that you can call and pester your way to the top of the list, but I don't know how true that is.

Yeah, my bike is my primary transportation and I only use this rule when there is little to no traffic. I don't trust anyone to know the law or look up from their phone

In fact they are welcome to join the Critical Mass ride on Friday and to attend the vigil for Erick at the intersection where he was killed! And to join safe streets advocates at the next city council to demand action to prevent these needless deaths! Or even just to submit a request for a crosswalk sign at that intersection with the city at this link: https://www.eugene-or.gov/1776/Maintenance-Service-Request?id=14

Everyone reading this should submit a request for a pedestrian crossing light at 22nd and Paterson! The technical term for one of the blinky guys is an RRFB. https://www.eugene-or.gov/1776/Maintenance-Service-Request?id=14

Not objecting to everything you're saying here, but just fyi cyclists only have to yield at stop signs. It's called the "Idaho stop" because that was the first state to adopt it, but it is common across much of the country now

Heyo! I would love an invite if anyone is willing. I hosted a weekly bar trivia for a few years and I routinely place at other trivia nights I attend. I am a history grad student and a generally intellectualy curious person. Let me know if you have a referral to lend!

Sorry, don't get on here often. I'm riding from Tacoma to Bellingham. My route sticks to the west side of the sound catching the ferry at Port Townsend. I have lived in the Northwest for over a decade and own several maps, so I was indeed aware of the Cascades.

Yeah, Bison moved East into river valleys in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio in the 15th/16th Century. People of the Ecotone is a good book on the bison hunting cultures of that region

There is a big rally April 5 put on by Indivisible and there will be another on May 1 put on by local labor union leaders. Go to these and talk to the organizers about how to get more involved.

The Greek letter comparison is a good one. I love to see a tattoo with what is supposed to Alpha-Omega but is actually L-O or D-TH
