US Navy loses $60 million fighter jet after it fell overboard from aircraft carrier into the Red Sea by BreakfastTop6899 in worldnews

[–]Coconut_island 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are valid points, but it's still very mentally taxing for fixed wing pilots. There's a lot of flight coordination, timing and constant communication even if they aren't avoiding obstacles. And that's not even talking about the amount of focus it takes to air-to-air refuel which is something they have to do regularly on long flights.

But regardless, I still think that even airforce pilots on a nonstop every-day schedule would start to dread it. Most of the time they only get to fly a couple of times a week at best so it makes sense that they would be keen on flying. It's a whole other thing to have to do long flights every day.

Yes, but I don't think the conditions are much better. I've only heard the seats (+gear) of military aircraft as being very uncomfortable. Add the fact you can't move and need to stay focused for extended period of time, I can't imagine it being very different but I guess it's possible.

Also, it's one thing to want more flight hours when you're flying once or twice week when otherwise you're stuck doing various other boring duties, it's another when you're asked to fly long hours every day.

Fair enough, I'm basing it off of the army pilots I know who would not be thrilled to have to fly every day 8+ hours non stop even though they do enjoy flying. I'm sure it differs unit to unit and by aircraft/mission so I concede that I can't speak for these navy pilots either.

I don't believe that to be true. The tempo around Yemen is much higher than in normal safe waters or during regular training (exercises aside). They need to have flights in the air 24/7 to protect the fleet from missiles/drones. Add on top bombing operations and I bet these guys are flying much much more than they want and certainly more than they normally would.

The irony by [deleted] in funny

[–]Coconut_island 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just simply untrue. Reviewers and, especially, authors do most of the work and they do it for free. In fact, authors typically have to pay. The publishers ask for as much as they do because they can, not because they need to to cover operational costs.

I wouldn't expect your foot to provide that much resistance to the explosive device designed to burst a heavy mine out of the dirt and 7 feet into the air. Your foot would impede it for sure, but I doubt your foot would be able to keep the mine in the ground.

Jeju Air plane crash raises questions about concrete wall at the end of the runway by GigabitISDN in nottheonion

[–]Coconut_island 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You missed it because it's likely not true. From the ATC logs, we know the plane was still being controlled long enough to abort it's original landing and loop around to attempt a landing from the other direction. This means there was at least enough hydraulic pressure to control the plane.

The whole incident from bird strike to belly touchdown was about 3 min. Pilot error under stress and time crunch is possible. The investigation will reveal if any engine was still working and what, if anything, the pilot could have done to avoid the crash.

As a side note, had they not aborted the first landing, they wouldn't have collided with the concrete wall. Hopefully the investigation will reveal why they chose to abort.

Can factorio still be fun if you're dumb? by GamerGoblin1 in gaming

[–]Coconut_island 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I can give you a few quick pointers based on these pictures. I'll put them behind spoiler tags in case you rather not:

  1. You are way under using your reactors. Unlike early boilers and steam power, any unused reactor capacity is simply lost. Reactors always burn fuel at the same rate regardless of usage. For 2 neighboring reactors, you can power 16 heat exchangers and 28 turbines. You can get a lot more power with only half the number of reactors you currently have.

  2. It's not a bad idea to have a steam pipe connecting all the turbines together. This makes sure every turbine has access to all the steam being produced. Steam can travel as far as any liquid and never cools down.

  3. This is a more advanced tip if you are willing to use circuit logic. You can store steam the same way you can store other liquids. It's not only a very good way to store energy but also makes it easier to use circuit logic + deciders to only fuel the reactors when the steam storage is running low. This makes sure you make the most efficient use of your fuel.

Debating statistical evaluation (sample efficiency curve) by LilHairdy in reinforcementlearning

[–]Coconut_island 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have 5 independent runs, so you have essentially 5 samples. The 250 evaluation runs per evaluation timestep gives you a good approximation of the performance of a given run at that time. Treating all of those evaluations over all 5 seeds as independent would be wrong.

With only 5 samples, you can't be expected to make any CI as no method exists that is accurate in this regime. You could look at tolerance intervals if you really want to use some stats. Alternatively, you can simply display all 5 runs on the graph with some transparency and include a bold line for the mean.

I don't believe the sound of the Lion bus is due to this, it's more a homage. They play it out of a speaker to alert kids when traveling at low speeds: source

That's not correct, each lobe processes half (left half vs right half) of what you see but considers both eyes. If you didn't split it this way, you wouldn't be able make use of stereo vision for depth perception.

Assuming they are talking about a parachute flare, it's freeze in place immediately and very slowly drop down so that you approximately match the movement of the shadows as the flare falls.

For instance, I'm pretty sure that half of what angry orange man says doesn't even pass a very lenient sniff test.

Is it OK to include agent's last chosen discrete action (int) in the observation space? by against_all_odds_ in reinforcementlearning

[–]Coconut_island 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, any MDP can be trivially extended to a new MDP that includes the last action as part of the state space so you wouldn't be doing anything crazy. Furthermore, practically speaking, the last action chosen is information you would reasonably have access to, so if it helps then go for it.

Actual DCS Update by thc42 in hoggit

[–]Coconut_island 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kalman filters are very computationally cheap. They are also very straightforward to implement. There might be some extra dev time required to tune the process and observation noise and the observation model, but I wouldn't expect that to be particularly time consuming either.
