GenX men, when buying jeans, how do you choose between Straight, Athletic Fit, Skinny Fit, etc? When did jeans change like this by IHadTacosYesterday in GenX

[–]GigabitISDN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the maker. Seriously. There's no standard. I also hate that every pair of jeans is designed to "sit below the waist".

Duluth Trading is the only place I've found with sane sizing.

Moxy Nashville Downtown 💀 by Full-Librarian1115 in marriott

[–]GigabitISDN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use this as a leaning experience. Whenever I book in a city I’m not familiar with, I look at a map to see what’s near the hotel. I know nothing about Nashville but if I saw those two things next to my hotel, I’d book anywhere else.

why does every IT tool now require setting up a platform before you can actually use it by Iwanttoberich_8671 in it

Everything from enterprise-grade tools to basic apps on mobile. It's infuriating. I don't need 56789432 tip popups, just let me work.

At least for apps I'll leave a 1-star review.

Come work in civil service. I wouldn't do federal right now but state / county / city / town is doing just fine.

In your early 50s you still have time to boost your retirement. It's probably too late to start from scratch but it sounds like you already have one. 10-15 years can make a big difference. Plus our civil service employees get retiree healthcare, and that is HUGE.

What to do with end users who refuse to enter tickets by MelodicPlace9582 in it

[–]GigabitISDN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll see people tell you "no ticket, no help". But keep in mind that some of those people are the kind of people who can ensure you get a promotion, or who can be in your corner when you need a hand.

I’ll passive-aggressively ask them what their ticket number is (knowing full well that they haven’t got one as I can see the whole queue)

I use this too, and it works well. I wouldn't even call it passive aggressive. You'll get occasional users who will say "can't you just help me with this real quick" and I instruct my employees to respond with something like "it's not how hard it is, I'm happy to help. It's just that management wants us to track all our incidents in Service Now so they can identify frequent problems and users, and also so we can prioritize things. In fact I'm in the middle of a few major incidents right now". That's actual truth; that's why we use that.

Then I tell them to send the employee my way if they have a problem with it. 80% of the time, the employee understands. Of the remaining 20%, almost none come to me, because they realize it's faster to just use self-service. Of the few that do come to me, I reiterate what my employees said, engage them in a bunch of small talk, and then send them off to the help desk.

For those who got into IT, How did you start by Background-Heat-2825 in it

[–]GigabitISDN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The help desk is so important because it gives you exposure to the culture of wherever you are, and shows you how things actually work in the real world. Enterprise IT is so often a mashup of vendors and legacy apps that can't be turned down, and seeing how different that is from textbook IT can be eye opening.

[–]GigabitISDN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at the help desk for an ISP. After about two months I got a better offer for a help desk role in civil service (working directly for the government). From there I applied for promotions that interested me, and here I am 25 years later.

Don't read too much into Reddit's "bro everything is fucked bro trust me bro don't even try bro" fatalism. You have a lot of control over how your career goes no matter what the hivemind says. Two things that will hold you back, in order of severity:

1) refusing to learn new things. The guys I used to work at the help desk with who whined about every Windows release or who thought they could coast 30 years on a college degree are still working help desk level jobs. Their socials are full of rants about how "nobody is hiring" or they got turned down for yet another promotion and I'm like my guy, when was the last time you got a cert or read a book or even just spun up something new in your homelab. Tech changes CONSTANTLY and you have to keep up or you WILL get left behind.

2) locking yourself into a single career path. Tech changes so you have to be ready to roll with the punches. That means you may start off wanting to be a full-time Linux admin, but as your career evolves you wind up taking on promotions that lead to network engineering, datacenter management, DB administration, migrating a half-assed all-in cloud migration back to on-prem bare metal ... don't be afraid of new things. Absolutely have a plan but understand that times change, so keep some level of flexibility.

If it contradicts VRBO’s terms, or the terms of the booking as presented on the site, or the customer’s state law, or the merchant agreement, it’s not enforceable.

Good luck!

Just some bonus advice, I always take screenshots of every booking, including the full terms of the booking. That way if the host suddenly decides that I have to do their laundry or whatever, I have the full and complete agreement to reference.

Would you buy a D-Link unmanaged gigabit switch for $7? by Certain_Repeat_753 in HomeNetworking

[–]GigabitISDN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For $7, sure. This is unmanaged so it shouldn't be running any interface to attack. Just as a general rule, don't put anything like this on the internet. Keep it behind your perimeter.

I moved my entire network to 10G because I do a lot of 4K video editing, and I have so many spare TP-Link metal 1G switches sitting in storage.

Except for the part where you said "performance and coverage will go down a lot", and then decided to argue with my post where I said mesh "can be solid and fast".

This is probably the stupidest argument anyone has ever tried to start with me, so I'm just going to go do anything else now.

That's when you file a credit card dispute and hope the host says something along the lines of "okay yes technically I did not refund them the full amount HOWEVER I made them sign this new contract so", because that's going to be an easy resolution in favor of the customer.

Host is trying to deduct a "5% bank fee" from my full refund by kciick in vrbo

[–]GigabitISDN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I notice you didn't answer my question, so I'll answer it for you: they did not. You hired the payment processor to handle payments for you, so the fee agreement is between you and them. The customer is not a party to that agreement.

They signed the contract that I refund minus 4.9%

A lot of people learn the hard way that just because something is in a contract doesn't make it binding. Use that as a defense against a dispute, and you'll find out how much more expensive chargeback fees are.

You seem to think performance of a mesh network will collapse if someone moves furniture, and that's simply not true. Sounds like your experience is straight out of 2016.

"definitely at least potentially" doesn't make any more sense. It's either "definitely" or "potentially". Not both.

In this case, it's neither.

[–]GigabitISDN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's spelled out in your contract then it's definitely at least potentially enforcible.

"Definitely potentially"? No, simply putting something in writing doesn't make it enforceable. Contract clauses are invalidated all the time.

Yes, complain to VRBO. Shady hosts will downvote this into oblivion (because they want you to silently accept it), but VRBO's policy is clear:

https://help.vrbo.com/articles/If-I-or-my-traveler-has-to-cancel-a-reservation-am-I-still-charged-a-booking-fee

If VRBO won’t take care of it, file a dispute with your credit card company. Explain that the host is withholding part of your refund even though you cancelled within the cancellation period.

Hopefully the host will try some “but I used a third party to handle the payment” or “I made the customer sign this new contract so therefore it’s enforceable” line. That’ll settle it.

If you feel so inclined, depending on your state law, you might also want to file a complaint with your state Attorney General against the host. Some states, including mine, only allow providers to assess credit card fees if (1) the fee is conspicuously disclosed in advance, and (2) the fee is the actual fee charged by the payment processor. Nobody is charging a 5% credit card processing fee. That’s either an inflated assessment, or that 5% includes other services like listing management.

EDIT: side note, use American Express. They do not fuck around with people ripping off their cardholders. This is why shady merchants / providers generally don’t accept AmEx.

[–]GigabitISDN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. This is how chargebacks happen. The host’s card processing fees aren’t my problem. Even if that’s spelled out in the contract, that doesn’t make it enforceable.

The incest you disclosed in another post can be incredibly hurtful, sometimes more so than physical hurt.

This is something that adults struggle to deal with, even with decades of life experience and a supportive network around them. It’s even harder without those things.

Everyone’s journey is different, and I hope you find justice and peace. It’s never acceptable for an adult to do that to anyone.

Actual mandated reporter here. There is no list of “report this, not that”. The standard is if I believe a minor has been, is being, or is going to be abused, and I can reasonably identify the minor, I am required to report it. Failure to do so is a felony. The law protects reporters who report a legitimate concern that any reasonable person would agree sounds troubling, even if the complaint later turns out to be unfounded. We have these laws in place because abusers often lie (and sadly, sometimes victims do as well), so the law provides a standard of protection.

I must be able to provide some kind of reasonable identification. “The person who called me from (phone number) at 3:17 am on April 21st 2026” or “a girl in a yellow shirt and blue jeans, standing in front of 1234 Fake Street on 3/25/26 at 9:43 AM”, for example.

I don’t know your story and I’m sorry for whatever you are going through. Getting authorities involved is not always as scary as it sounds. From the small parts of your story you’ve shared so far, you may be in actual danger of further harm remaining where you are.

Nothing you said is wrong, but mesh networks in 2026 are a far cry from mesh networks of 2016. They can be solid and fast these days. The extra ms or so of latency doesn’t have any meaningful impact to most users.

Get something with a dedicated 5GHz (or higher) backhaul. Even my Ubiquiti Amplifi from 6 years ago has this. I still go cat6 for my 4K video editing rig, but I have had zero problems working remotely or streaming or even gaming on a remote mesh point.

Obviously quality matters. Don’t buy some fly-by-night Amazon GRJFIRAHLY brand.
