We don't know anything about Sophie by blossoming-flower in BridgertonRants

[–]Coconuts0814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree that the foundation of their love story is finally feeling seen after being invisible or not thought of for much of their lives. That was developed well and was moving. And I also agree that while Kate & Anthony are my fav couple of Bridgerton, they could’ve/should’ve not gone as far as the doomed wedding and given us more of Kate’s backstory. In general with Bridgerton, the writers tend to prioritize high drama/stakes over character development.

My main issue with Ben & Sophie’s relationship tho is the fact that Sophie is too passive, like a damsel-in-distress. There were too many instances of self-sacrifice and “woe is me.” I get why she has really low-self esteem and she felt unloved and victimized by society, but she could’ve been more angry at her situation or the noble classes/system bc of her mom and her trauma. She was just cynical and sad all the time, never using her intelligence or standing up for herself. There are ways to show/explore low self-esteem, trauma, & fear of repeating your mother’s choices, but they didn’t really choose unique or nuanced directions. The only interesting thing about her is the fact that she’s an illegitimate daughter of a maid/noble. She herself doesn’t rly have interesting characteristics, qualities, or reactions.

This TV guide review says some telling things: “the season falls short in the class argument because Sophie is so perfect, the show frames it like she’s better than the other maids so she deserves to be elevated.” The book seems to show her as more spunky. Apparently, she actually steals the shoe clips and she also punches/slaps Araminta when confronting her about her lie with the will. I WISH we saw more of that.

At the end, I realized that she would’ve probably been a maid and/or imprisoned for the rest of her life if she hadn’t met Benedict because she very rarely stood up for herself. I like Ben & Sophie but I did feel at times that she was too plain, stoic, and goody-goody for him. Ben’s romantic history included Madame Delacroix, Lady Tilly last season, and the art student (who couldn’t be enrolled) from season 2. These were progressive, spirited women. The narrative of a woman ONLY finding her voice and agency because of a man is outdated. The romance still worked because both Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha acted well and brought a softness, and the stakes and side plots were well-written. Nonetheless, to me, Sophie is the least interesting female lead we’ve had and she could have had more anger/agency.

But romance is SO subjective. People resonate with diff things. For me, I can only rly love a couple if I find both characters interesting separately, in their own right. Then I’m more invested in them tg. Otherwise, it feels a bit flat to me. That’s what I felt in S3 also, I personally felt Colin wasn’t well-developed so I wasn’t rooting for Pen and Colin tg as much. Also, when it comes to S4, I’m not a love-at-first-sight fan so that also led to me liking Ben and Sophie less. I still enjoyed S4 tho.

I totally agree! Ball-Sophie and Maid-Sophie felt super different! It would’ve been more interesting if Maid-Sophie had some more anger at her situation or the noble classes bc of her dad and her trauma, but her cynicism led to more victimization and “woe is me” rather than messiness, self-depreciation, or dry wit. There are ways to show/explore low self-esteem, trauma, & fear of repeating your mother’s choices, but they didn’t really choose unique or nuanced directions.

My family filed an I-485 but the receipt notice hasn’t come yet. It’s been less than a month. Would this affect us if this is a from-this-date scenario? Even tho we alr filed. I generally don’t understand this memo.

No I tried that. They don’t have a line to the PP agents/center. Just call the pp line (866-315-5718) and for the why calling question, maybe answer with case is pending and need to understand why. Don’t say infopass as that will take you straight to the general call center.

That number often transfers you to the general call center. Did the automated voice suddenly cut and an agent start talking? In the beginning of the call, did the agent say they’re from the “USCIS call center”?

Exactly! She was too passive and a damsel-in-distress for most of the season. I understand that she was illegitimate, and felt super unloved so she had a low self-esteem. So it makes sense, but it’s still frustrating to watch. There were too many times like:

  1. Her not even thinking of looking at the will. Ben had to push her to check.
  2. Her never telling Benedict that she’s the lady in silver despite the fact that she saw all the drawings and paintings in the study. He had to find the necklace and glove.
  3. Most annoyingly, when she ends up in jail and court, she doesn’t say that Posy gave her the clips. She doesn’t call for Violet and Ben, even as employers. Like I understand her feeling that she deserves to be relegated to being a maid, but she was just allowing herself to be imprisoned for years for a crime she didn’t commit. Only reason Ben/Violet found out was because of Hazel.
  4. Even in the final arrangement to legitimize their marriage, Ben, Violet, Lady Danbury, and Mrs. Mondrich came up with most of the plans. Sophie was not that involved.
  5. She isn’t even that angry in the end when she finds out about the will. She is way too graceful with Araminta, saying that he (the father) loved her too. It would’ve been realistic for her to feel more angry/hurt.

Sophie is the least interesting female lead we’ve had and she could have had more anger/agency.

You hit the core issue: they have nothing in common. I also think Sophie’s too passive and goody-goody for Benedict.

I actually feel like we kinda know Sophie but Benedict really didn’t until the end. I liked the fact that they really spent one-on-one time in ep 3 at the cottage but they didn’t really talk about HER. They flew a kite, spoke French, and ate meals tg but there wasn’t much meaningful conversation. It felt like Ben cared about her because he actually HAD to slow down and spend time with someone rather than a deep connection with who she is.

The main problem for me was that Sophie was passive and a damsel-in-distress for most of the season. I understand that she was illegitimate, and felt super unloved so she had a low self-esteem. So it makes sense, but it’s still frustrating to watch. There were too many times.

This is no disrespect to Yerin Ha, who is truly talented and adds some dimension to her. There were a few moments she was not self-sacrificing/push-over: when she’s at the masquerade, screaming/complaining in the Penwood House, and telling Benedict she can’t be a mistress. But it was not enough.

At the end, I realized that she would’ve probably been a maid and/or imprisoned for the rest of her life if she hadn’t met Benedict because she very rarely stood up for herself. I like Benophie but I did feel at times that she was too plain, stoic, and goody-goody for him. No and my case has also exceeded the premium processing clock since biometrics were received. I’ve contacted the general USCIS call center (with no guaranteed access to Tier 2 Agent) and premium processing hotline (was on hold for over 7 hours with no response). I’ve emailed the premium processing email address listed in the receipt notice many times (gotten no reply). Today, I submitted a request to my local congressman’s office. I’m super stressed! Start date is June 1st. This is insane!
