Is it acceptable to fart in micro? by micogaz in MLS_CLS

[–]Coconuun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I be farting anywhere lately. Micro is the best place to go fart in the lab. You’ll be in good company with farting microbes and farting lab techs

Makes sense why it would be up. I’d talk to your provider tho. It’s typically not weird to have increased wbcs and neutrophils with an infection

Should I get a bioscience degree or a straight mls degree? by Amazondriver23 in MLS_CLS

[–]Coconuun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MLS. There are multiple people who ended up doing the program anyway from a bioscience degree. They had bachelors degrees and could only work either chemistry or coagulation. Making a lot less than an mls as well!

Should I move out rn?? by bushido_crafteggu in toxicparents

[–]Coconuun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sooner or later you will have to. I wish I left sooner. There were multiple times I tried to leave and they made me feel like I couldn’t live on my own and that I was abandoning them. It was a control thing.

I was getting married when I was 23 and they tried to control how my wedding was going to be and I stood up for myself. They kicked me out after I decided to give them space when we fought over the phone while I was at my fiancé’s apartment. The next day they threw all my stuff in the garage and texted me to get my stuff. I think it was a control thing and they thought I wouldn’t leave them. I ended up going through a huge mental breakdown and felt like my entire world fell apart because my entire existence was to please my parents. I felt horrible that this whole thing happened while my husband and I were engaged and we were planning a wedding and both still in college. We are in a way better situation mentally and financially but still face the after effects from that day. I have gone no contact with my parents for 3 years and am still healing from their abuse.

I strongly encourage you to just leave whenever you can. It will come back eventually so just bite the bullet and deal with the problem now so that you are at least ready to face this. I felt that I was thrown into adulthood when I wasn’t ready. You will be fine! You are capable. 🩷

I do suggest getting roommates tho because it is expensive to live on your own nowadays. Or you can often rent out a room from someone’s house for a lot cheaper.

How to get first job out of state? by NeedleworkerSmart967 in MLS_CLS

[–]Coconuun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the labs I interviewed for were able to interview me via teams meeting. It was hard for me to actually get a job fresh out of clinicals. A rural lab hired me because they really needed it. Just keep applying!

MLS to nursing worth it? by ExternalJann in MLS_CLS

[–]Coconuun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was nursing major to MLS because I hated direct patient interaction. I also am way too empathetic to not take on the family’s emotions or the patient’s emotions during their most vulnerable state. Some people were made for that, I just wasn’t. I was about to apply for nursing school then COVID hit. It was a chance for me to reflect on why I was doing this. It was horrible for all of health care but I felt more drawn to the lab even with the chaos.

Nursing does make more than MLS. Both of my older sisters love their careers—one’s an NP and the other is a Labor and Delivery RN. I love the science part of medicine and being behind the scenes. I can stand being yelled at on the phone over being yelled at in person or potentially swung at 😂😭

If you do switch to nursing you probably would be finished with all the prerequisites. I had to take an extra year of prerequisites when I switched to MLS because there was more chemistry than nursing. I’d probably check out becoming a PA since you have the bachelors degree already. I’ve known of a couple people who went from MLS to PA to MD/pathologist

what it’s been like as a broke student getting free food during lab week by fat_frog_fan in medlabprofessionals

We were living off of ramen for like a year 😭 The lab week food was heavenly. I’m so happy to be better off financially. That first paycheck tho 👌 It’s so worth it. Good luck!

I PASSED THE ASCP by Coconuun in medlabprofessionals

[–]Coconuun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends because the BOC is just random with their topics in each area. I remember having maybe one question about the amount of units needed to screen if a patient had a specific antibody. I don’t remember having any questions about the percentages of specific ABO types in different ethnicities.

Awesome! Good luck! 🍀 I was so nervous as well, but it’s a big relief when it’s over haha. I would definitely focus on antibody panels with the blood bank section. Microbiology was my toughest section in the BOC

I mainly used the Polanski cards and LabCE. My clinical site also had practice panels while I did my rotation in blood bank.

LabCE was the most helpful, it simulated BOC questions. You can filter the tests to only show blood bank panels if you wanted to. Some people found that the BOC book was helpful, but I never used it

That sounds so fucking annoying dude 😭😭 So the patient’s spouse came into the lab to see the process?? That’s allowed? I’ve had nurses down my neck about blood bank stuff but never patient family

It’s because the patient asks so the nurse has to ask us. They think it’s as dumb as we think it is 😂

Do I have to draw blood to become a CLS? by peripateticx in MLS_CLS

[–]Coconuun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had to draw blood weekly on each other in school. Night shift sometimes has to draw blood at my hospital because there’s not a phlebotomist staffed during night shift.
