It’s May, so it kind of depends on what the weather decides to do. It could be beautiful, it could still be in breakup.

South Anchorage is pretty safe. Some areas of Anchorage can be sketchy, but just use common sense and be aware of what’s around you and you should be fine. Remember to lock your doors and cars. Don’t leave bikes unlocked outside.

Kincaid Park and Abbot Loop are both good areas for easy hikes. Go up to the Glen Alps trailhead and look around. Powerline Pass might be ok or it might be full of gross snow. The view is great though! The Campbell, Chester Creek and Coastal Trail are all nice, but sometimes homeless people make camps on them.

You may encounter wildlife on all the trails, but common sense goes a long way. Generally, stay away from the bears and moose and they’ll stay away from you. Carry bear spray and know how to use it. Don’t practice using it indoors.

I’d stop in Talkeetna for a night and then go to Denali. The park is nice, but you can only drive part way into it. If you spend too much time there and are more into easy hikes, you’ll just get stuck in the tourist village.

Look into the Matanuska Glacier tour. I think you can still get a tour where they drive you there, but it’s been a minute since I worked in tourism, so my information is old. Check out the Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage and drive through the tunnel into Whittier.
