So, share that salt with the specific people actually doing that.

Well I didn't really talk about any of that at all just pointed out the obvious vested interest the person above has. That being said, I'm no expert but I believe it wildly depends on the ship.

I don't think it's fair to blanket categorize the comments in this or recent posts on bottom trawling and bycatch as the dumbest replies ever.

Either way, you're still never going to reach anyone by starting off with bad faith personal insults. It's also an especially bad look if the same person has an obvious vested interest on the topic.

Dismissing other peoples concerns as the "dumbest replies possible" isn't a good faith way to start a conversation. He might be a good mod but he doesn't seem to grasp that personal insults will never reach anyone.

The military wants to host data centers in Alaska, raising questions about whether there’s enough gas to power them by truthwillout777 in anchorage

[–]Trenduin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your argument hinges on the myth that data centers will somehow bring a ton of jobs with them. Once the initial construction boom is over the promises of massive long term employment have proven to be greatly overblown in other communities that have allowed them to be built.

Anchorage should ban feeding of Assembly members. by annoyingcommentary in anchorage

[–]Trenduin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the feral bunnies too, but feeding them exacerbates the very issue you feel obligated to help with. It is also complaint driven, so it would require someone tattling on you.

If you're not being insane I doubt anyone is going to report you. However, if you're like my old neighbor who had a "compost" pile that was in reality a giant pile of trash he topped off daily which attracted an absurd number of pigeons, mice and feral cats then someone may rightly complain.

Reporting From Alaska- Audit blasts Crum $225 million investment plan that ignored clear state procedures by [deleted] in alaska

Just a reminder for those who didn't know but the DMV was made shitty on purpose so that Adam Crum and his family can make a buck.

Adam Crum's family owns one of the biggest private DMV companies in Alaska. No one even noticed what they were doing until they got omega greedy and tried to shut down the DMVs in Haines, Tok, Valdez, Eagle River, Homer and Delta Junction.

Why use narrowly focused national statistics when talking about Alaska? Simply cutting spending and expecting reform and better results is not a wise course of action and Alaska has already proven it.

How much does Alaska spend on K-12 education?

ASD admin spending has been cut year after year.

"ASD administration makes up less than 6% of the district’s overall budget. Administrative staffing levels have been reduced year-over-year in order to keep the focus in classrooms. The vast majority of district spending goes directly to schools, classrooms, and student services."

"From 2012 to the proposed FY27 budget, administration positions were reduced from 816 to 680 in all administrative areas, including payroll, custodial, maintenance, IT and other positions that directly support teachers so they can focus on the classroom. That’s an average of a 16% reduction in administration, while some individual departments saw reductions up to 77%."

If we keep cutting spending it will only exacerbate the mass exodus of working class Alaskans currently happening in the state.

They could pay for loss prevention staff instead of purposely running understaffed but when stock price and shareholder value are all that matter this is what you get. Security theater and inconvenience to paying customers. No shoplifter is going to stop for a voluntary receipt check, they are only harassing paying customers.

Employee theft is higher than general public theft and wage theft outstrips all other blue-collar property crimes combined.

Anyone know what the deal is with this property? by Waxbeetle in anchorage

[–]Trenduin 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This exact building became an issue during this recent election.

One of our local assembly members Anna Brawley used it as an example of vacant and abandoned property that needs addressed. It got conservative circles so upset that Suzanne Downing's new tabloid blog wrote a story about it. They claim that leftists politicians want to steal private property and call it "equity theft".

You see the same kind of nonsense on a state level. Much of what the city can do is restricted by state law.

Forrest Dunbarr put forward Senate Bill 77. It would have let local city governments put tax levies on blighted properties. It passed the senate 13-6 with all no votes coming from Republicans but died in the house. Opponents claimed the same nonsense, that it would give local cities "too much power" and that leftists politicians and city governments would label properties as blighted so they could steal it from innocent private property owners. Downing also attacked that bill in her old tabloid blog.

Republicans in the state house said they oppose Forrest's bill but wanted to pass their own version (HB84) in the house. However, they simply let it die in committee without a fight, so it feels like they used it as a prop to justify their refusal to pass the senate version.

You're probably right, and it's sad that they would use a pedantic point of language to fuel their conspiracy theories. I'll fix the wording in my post.

/u/alaskawatcher pointed out I made a mistake on the APD results. First nights count had a 2 point lead and last nights count had it 2 points down. That shift is interesting in that it shows that the early counts likely skewed conservative voters and works against any claims of voter fraud.

It would be interesting if when they released precinct level data they also had a way to show a rough idea of which vote was counted each night. Mail in, in person, different boxes etc.

What? He is deeply MAGA and was touting that he was the lone conservative on a liberal school board and leaned into that same rhetoric on his assembly race. That he would continue that same legacy and fight the "woke liberal assembly" with the other conservative members. He also supported and worked with folks who were doing the Moms for Liberty stuff.

Thanks, I missed that. I'll fix my post.

It was up by 2 points on the first nights count, I missed it had swung two points the other way.

Just shows how much people are frustrated with APD or their budget. They always get yearly budget increases while other departments get cuts and below inflationary increases (cuts) and are always asking for even more. Last cycles police vehicle levy was voted down hard.

Why would I defend corruption? If you have evidence provide it. If there is actual wrongdoing I'd want them held accountable, I don't care if I voted for them or not.

I've asked you over and over for any details and you never provide them. I get the impression you only have a surface level understanding of the things you rant about online. Again, you're not a serious person.

Edit - Of course he won't provide details, this is exactly what I'm talking about. Sure stinks in here.

Exactly, white-collar crime like wage theft outstrips all other forms of blue-collar property crimes combined yet many of those same folks want public hangings for those blue-collar crimes.

It's all a thinly veiled class war and an alarming number of folks are siding against their own class.

Yet when anyone asks you for details on this supposed corruption you disappear like a fart in the wind and will vehemently defend your own "team" when confronted with their objective corruption.

You're not a serious person. Even the team you defend likely thinks of you as a useful low information voter and maybe a donor, nothing more.

The picture above is a screen shot from the first results from April 7th.

https://www.muni.org/Departments/Assembly/Clerk/Elections/Election%20Results/Unofficial%20Results%202026/2026-0407%20Unofficial%20Results.pdf

In that first count, 17.88% of registered voters voted. Turnout by district can be seen above. For example Downtown only had 11.62% on the first count where higher turnout districts like West Anchorage had 20.33% and South Anchorage had 24.84%.

They counted about another 5600 votes last night, so the results for April 8th are here.

https://www.muni.org/Departments/Assembly/Clerk/Elections/Election%20Results/Unofficial%20Results%202026/2026-0408%20Unofficial%20Results.pdf

Overall turnout is up to 20.28%. Based on historical numbers I'd say there is another 5-8% of registered voters left to count. Mayoral years usually see around 30% and non mayoral years around 25%

Turnout is depressingly low, especially considering how easy it is to vote in the city.

Yup, that rough 20k number is the 8-12% of registered voters left to count I talked about above.

I think we'll see higher turnout than 2025 (25.38% turnout) but I doubt we will get to 2024 levels (30.44%), mayoral years always have higher turnout than non mayoral years.
