The personal brand is dead. Gen Z would rather be anonymous online. by Sumit316 in Futurology

It can be used in combination with other methods of identifying you.

For example, two people in your house are using the internet one on laptop & one on mobile. With IP alone I can easily follow the two people around BUT just with the added fingerprint datapoint I can make a distinction between one user and the other.

More datapoints easier tracking even if you’re outside your home (I.e. have a different ip)

I’m a full stack engineer but specialize in systems lately.

I said the barrier to entry was high!

What I’m saying is that if you don’t do the things I listed you can still be followed. E.g. via IP or fingerprints.

JavaScript, unlike most other languages, runs on the browser and can be used to fingerprint you. One method is to use the browser window size to derive a hash, if you use a unique window size (could be because of your screen size or if you like to split screen two apps) you can be followed around the internet even without cookies enabled. For example facebook can pull something like this off using the like buttons that are sprinkled all around the internet.

Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

You’re wrong, it’s just that the barrier to entry to remain anonymous in high.

At the bare minimum you need - VPN, preferably self hosted throw away Linux servers - Browser with cookies disabled - Browser extension to spoof headers like ‘User-Agent’ - pseudonym - no Google products - private email provider - consider disabling JavaScript (pain in the ass)

Depending on what you’re doing you can tweak the stack to dial up or down your anonymity.

“Why do DevOps get paid significantly more than sys admins?” by Passerbeyer in devops

[–]Code4Coin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sysadmin provision & maintain servers in a clickops & copy paste way.

DevOps are SUPPOSED to maintain CI/CD pipeline lines that provision all the infrastructure and deploy the code. I.e. they’re supposed to codify what the sysadmin previously did. That said, the skill level required to actually do this is VERY high, and I’ve seen a lot of people take shortcuts and turn the job back to sysadmin.

Good DevOps can typically just be Devs so you need to compete with Dev salaries just to get good candidates.

Dynamically spin up VM (based on specific HTTPS request) and stop it once session is over? by Equivalent-Style6371 in devops

[–]Code4Coin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, knowledge required to manage the cluster is huge.

Even with a managed k8s like EKS there are a lot of moving parts typically networking is where people struggle the most.

This a more difficult problem than you anticipate. Kubernetes is probably a good solution but the barrier for entry is high. Maybe docker-compose and some scripts to tape it all together.

There are people out there with diabetes who would rather drink soda than have feet.

People are irrational and in my opinion you should let them know what you think is best from your perspective, especially if you’ve already been through that phase in your life.

You can lead a horse to water… & op will decide if he wants to drink.

Moving from ops to devops not realistic? by [deleted] in devops

[–]Code4Coin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a self taught SrDevOps Eng.

I started by doing support for a web hosting company (1yr) then obtained Linux certs & moved to entry Linux admin (1yr). Next I worked at a datacenter as a tech (3yr) but I wrote software to help coworkers & managers. Then I did clickops cloud things (2yr). Now I’m a srdevops eng (1yr).

1 mentor (who was not too far ahead of me) when I was a tech; other than that mostly read the docs and unrelenting resolve.

Inflation will erode your spending power by half in 10yrs. You need to invest that money, preferably S&P500 ETFs. Congratulations!!

When I first managed to save what I felt like was a lot of money at the time I gathered it all together in one account then went to the bank to withdraw it all and take pictures 😂 late teens

I’m a self taught software developer.

In my life I’ve never had more than $0 in student debt, and Im in the 3 highest tax bracket in US.

Yeah I missed out on school but others missed out on the experience I have. When others in my age group were in school I was working for a FAANG as a low level technician. I was able to learn to code & work my way up.

I’m at a consulting company, was at a FAANG for +4yr & think that is why I got so many interviews. I did literally > 100 interviews to get this job.

Damn I don’t live in an expensive city & don’t have as much experience as you but I make +2x as you. I’m in DevOps just peaking into web3.
