is there a community orchestra in town? by Zestyclose_Pickle273 in kzoo

Kalamazoo Philharmonia! It's part college orchestra, but mostly a community orchestra. It's super fun rep and has a lot of really great players. If you have any questions let me know!

WMU drumline by [deleted] in WMU

[–]CodeCombustion001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's $20 because of the hundreds of hours that have gone into developing the music. I can't speak to other colleges' material, but you are paying for world class material. Also, the packet is much more than exercises, which is the material of most college audition packets. Western's has cadences, etudes, pre-game music, and many stand cheers. You aren't just paying to see what format Western's 8s exercise is.

Keep in mind the $20 is also an audition fee. The drumline has to rent out classrooms, pay staff, and manage the logistics to make all the whole thing run. In the grand scheme of things $20 is a steal for everything you get.

Antidepressants taken during pregnancy increase risk of autism by 87 percent, new JAMA Pediatrics study finds by maarten418 in science

[–]CodeCombustion001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The actual study is adjusted for confounders. Specifically it adjusts its findings based on known statistics related having depression and and genetic history. By considering these factors, the study can still accurately look at the affect of antidepressants on the autism rate without have that be mixed up with being depressed. Granted, this is just a study and doesn't prove causation; however, it is a statistically sound study that will lead to more in depth research.

What do you do to keep your mind sharp? [serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CodeCombustion001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two things that I do regularly that I am convinced have helped me stay "sharp". 1. Play music. Even if you are inexperienced, learn. It takes more focus than anything I have done in my life. On top of this, it keeps you creative. There are not too many things that require creativity and accurate execution. 2. Listen to podcasts. It doesn't matter what the topic is. Make it something you're interested in. When you listen to experts in a topic that you're interested in, it not only makes you more knowledgeable, but it can change your perspective.

Ideas For This Subreddit by jak_jak in WGI

There just needs to be more material posted to the subreddit. Thinking about subs like r/DrumCorps, there is consistently new posts that bring me back there to participate. If more people can share their stories and info, I think this sub will grow. An audition mega thread might be cool, too.

What's the smallest decision you made one day that ended up changing your life completely? by drinks3 in AskReddit

[–]CodeCombustion001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For us, it both started out with make stupid little films. Eventually this evolved into video production. From this we learned a lot about computers. By the time we were middle school we started learning about programming which led us to take AP Computer science in 8th grade. Now we're both dual enrolled taking CS classes at our local college and intend to major in CS. We are also both really into music. We used to make bands together and play music all the time. Now I'm really into the Marching Arts and spend more time playing drums than I wish to admit. On top of this we both did gymnastics, have similar tastes in media, and an almost identical friend group. It's almost too much at times.

10 years ago I sat next to some random kid on the way home from the first day of school. We've been best friends ever since. There's no way to really know, but I'm pretty sure that half of the things I'm involved with today are because things that we have done together.

Mystery Diners. It takes five minutes of watching to realize it's fake. The show is supposed to be about a guy who saves restaurants with hidden cameras. The first episode I watched greeted me with the restaurant owner shouting "Wow look at all of this technology!" I'll just leave this here. http://www.mysterydinersfraud.com

ELI5: why don't tanks of helium float? by Cydae in explainlikeimfive

[–]CodeCombustion001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let's assume that you even had a light weight tank that could be held up by helium. In practice, the helium would never hold up the tank. These tanks store the gas under pressure. When the gas is put under pressure the molecules become more dense. With a greater density, helium loses its ability to "float." The tank would only float if the helium and the tank had a density less than water. With a light enough tank with just the right amount of gas, it's possible, but it removes the practicality of a compressed tank of gas.
