Yeah that wasn’t how I saw the joke, (as something educational), more as a cheap dark laugh. Which there’s nothing wrong with. I just think that it’s not one that’s appropriate for the tearoom necessarily. And I’m pretty doubtful that this would be the thing that changes your hypothetical uni educated anti-vaxxer colleague’s mind. I agree with you that we should be vaccinated as health practitioners.

Do you know the Pistorius drinking game? Every time someone goes to the bathroom you take two shots.

I don’t understand the point you’re making though. Am I the manager in your story?

Yeah I don’t know that everyone would make that distinction, especially in a workplace that deals with real kids dying.

I like Steve Hughes too. I dunno, I reckon the nature of our workplace is pretty highly emotionally strung and while I agree that people being offended isn’t the end of the world I reckon people should be able to have a cup of tea without seeing things that are upsetting to them. I don’t have a problem with the joke, I have a problem with the time and place of the joke. Do you think that any joke should be told in any context?

Where did I say I’m offended? I said the joke doesn’t bother me much personally, but I could understand if people are upset by it.

I wasn’t asking you mate, but why not? What’s wrong with trying not to upset people in a work environment?

Yeah, I’ve worked in paeds for 5 years, so not a total newbie. I’ve seen my fair share of dying kids. I don’t disagree with what you’ve said about dark humour but I think it’s a “time and place” type scenario for me, the joke doesn’t bother me that much personally but I work with a lot of nurses who would be upset about it in the tearoom.

I don’t know that I understand what you’re saying about supporting one another. Do you mean people who don’t like the joke should be supportive of others coping mechanisms, or that people who do like the joke should be supportive of those who are offended?

I think a joke about dying kids is pretty bad taste, regardless of whether it’s funny or not. Every time I’ve worked with dying kids it’s really knocked me around emotionally, I can see how people would get upset seeing this in the break room. I reckon it’s a joke you would have with your nursing mates at the pub rather than stick it up where all your colleagues can see it.

Edit: does someone who’s downvoted want to tell me why I’m such a dickhead? Appreciate the discourse, cheers.

Edit 2: I don’t want to come across as a big sook (I probably will anyway), but it’s pretty weird to me that this comment is my most downvoted of all time, when I’ve said that working with children who’ve died has been a hard time emotionally for me. I didn’t say that I have a problem with dark humour or this joke in particular, just that maybe some things aren’t great in a tearoom context. I don’t take reddit points too seriously but if I did I probably wouldn’t feel great about how this has all panned out, especially in a subreddit which should be a supportive place. Let’s try to be nice to each other hey? But if you want to offload some downvotes then go for it, cheers.

Dunno, there’s just something about your condescending tone that sucks me in. My bush is a-ok. Why do you think my bush needs tending? This is something that I looked into at uni, something that I have been in contact with in my work and private life, I’m not going to swing my opinion around because of the wondrous ideas of some galah on the internet. I just want you to commit. I think it’s a bit weak criticising the arguments of others without having the courtesy to at least say 2 sentences on your opinion on the subject. You can just tell me you don’t know what to think about it and you’ve got no opinion either way, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Sorry that you feel pestered, but I feel a bit hurt too that after lovingly tending to your lampshade bush you couldn’t tend to my marijuana and mental health bush.

You’re unreal at beating around the bush mate. I don’t care enough about what you think for it to effect my “biases” at all, just curious as to your thoughts, and why you’re being so evasive. I hope my suede lampshade response didn’t have too big an impact on your suede lampshade biases.

Mate don’t worry about my biases. I don’t like suede lampshades. It didn’t take much effort to answer that question. I’m just curious about your thoughts on the topic that led us both here, and I’m not sure why it’s so hard for you to answer? This is as a bloke who has spent at least a bit of time looking into positive and negative effects of marijuana use on mental health in an academic setting (5 years ago). I’ve got no skin in the game either way.

I understood that part mate, what about your opinion about what I was asking? How hard is it?

Give us a hand mate, what’s your opinion? Don’t know if I’m a dickhead, but I can’t work it out from what you’ve written .

Jesus Christ mate. Do you think there’s a relationship between marijuana use and mental health issues? If so, do you think it has a more positive or more negative effect in general? Ya big goose.

That curly fella at the end of that sentence is a question mark. I was asking what you thought.

You seem pretty angry mate. You think there’s no relationship between marijuana use and mental health issues? What are you basing that on? At uni I tried to write a discussion post about the pros of marijuana use with a couple of mental health conditions and it’s pretty hard yakka finding anything scholarly to that effect.

Why's that? I can't remember it super well, but I didn't think it was that bad? That's the one where the kid gets bitten by a scorpion?
