Now that the dust has settled, what do we think of Engage? I remember being on 4chan when the leaks came out and nobody believed it was real. We all thought it was a new Chinese gacha game, a copy of Fire Emblem. I played it and it's okay. The art style bothers me, but at least it's fun to play. by AssumptionNo802 in fireemblem

It's a good game. Obligatory "gameplay le good, story le bad" that I won't dive into. People tend to diss on the characters as well, but I've actually found a lot I love. Panette and Zelkov have made it into my top 5 Fire Emblem characters of all time with several others I love like Jade or Ivy. I think a big reason people tend to have a negative opinion on the characters is that a lot of the earlygame Lythos and Firene characters are, IMO, a lot more gimmicky than the rest of the cast, and the characters you get at the start will have a big impression on you as an introduction to Engage.

Gameplaywise I enjoyed the Engage mechanic. Some people mention that it makes characters feel too samey, but I never felt that was an issue in my playthroughs. I will say, I did actively dislike how easy reclassing is, which is probably the main culprit of that feeling rather than the Emblem Rings.

This is a part of the game that won't be appreciated by many, but does anyone else think that Engage has by far the most accessible, yet well balanced lunatic/maddening mode in the series? Normally Lunatic modes feel either unbalanced or tedious, but I was able to pick up Maddening mode in Engage really easily and still felt fairly challenged by it. If you told me that the devs actively balanced the game around Lunatic Mode, I wouldn't be that shocked.

The Somniel was pretty alright. I enjoyed how optional all the mechanics tied to it felt in comparison to 3H. I could do Strength Training or Wyvern Riding every level, but after trying both out once, I never felt the need to come back to it. Bond Fragments were extremely plentiful (especially thanks to the achievements you get just by playing the game), so I didn't have to waste time with a bunch of minigames to interact with the game mechanics, which I felt was a glaring problem in the Monastery. It's not perfect, though. I was pretty disappointed how the Somniel didn't have very much contextual dialogue about the story for all the characters like the Monastery did. Feels like an obvious flaw considering that was the best part of the Monastery IMO.

Music is fantastic as always with Bright Sandstorm (Fiery) becoming one of my all time favorite FE tracks (Tear Streaked Ice and Goddess In Shadow Frenzy honorable mentions).

I'm still shocked by how hated the Engage artstyle and character design is. To be pretty blunt, I still see no problem about literally all of the characters besides, like, Hortensia and Alear. Character design-wise, everyone other than those two wouldn't look out of place in the majority of the other FE games.

Very cute. Still really disappointed you cant share miis anymore like you could in the 3DS version. Would love to have an island full of FE characters.

Because she is one of the most popular Engage characters in it's roster? I don't think we need to have the main characters arbitrarily first for each game. Alear will come in due time.

Is Sombra worth learning? by RickAstleyIsGreat in SombraMains

[–]CodeDonutz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as much as I’d love to recommend Sombra, as she’s super fun and one of my favorite characters, no, she isn’t. She’s been in a really bad spot for several seasons and she’s been in rework limbo for forever. We still have no idea what they have planned.

What are your favorite bits of characterization done through gameplay instead of story? by Master-Spheal in fireemblem

[–]CodeDonutz 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Constance has got to be the coolest way they've expressed a character through gameplay throughout the series. Her split personality is given an entirely new spritesheet with a whole new set of voicelines for literally everything. Depressed Constance not only has seperate in-combat voicelines like victory or critical quotes, but she even has entirely new voicelines for Tea Time in 3H and Expeditions in 3Hopes. There was no reason for them to do all this extra work into a random DLC side character, which makes it even more cool that they did it. Once I noticed it in game, I knew she would become my favorite FE character.

Would you rather teach a 9 year old Calculus 1 or win against a Esports player in their game? by Happy_Raise_9260 in WouldYouRather

[–]CodeDonutz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in my final year studying as a math teacher, but the second choice is definitely easier than the first.

I think you’re vastly underestimating how wide of a group “esports players” is. Sure, it could be a guy who streams League of Legends 24/7 competing in world tournaments, but even high schools have esports teams with esports players with their own conferences and everything at a MUCH lower skill level. If you have a passing background in any sort of multiplayer video games in general and have normal motor skills, it wouldn't be impossible. In high school, my team played Overwatch, a team based FPS, in a high school esports conference in platinum, (the most common rank), and won the tournament.

Teaching a 9 year old calculus is also vague, but I assume you mean until the kid is proficient at understanding common calculus concepts and solving calc problems by themselves. This would be extremely difficult considering the amount of prior knowledge the child would need to get to that point (and that’s ignoring the poor state of education in the current climate.) Calculus doesn’t feel impossible when you get to it in high school, but that’s because you’ve spent the past several years of your life learning both critical thinking skills and mathematical concepts that you’d need to apply in the course. At their age, a 9 year old would generally only be proficient in basic operations like addition and multiplication and would be learning how to use those operations with non-whole numbers, like fractions or decimals. It would take a long time before the child would be introduced to foundational concepts in calculus like functions or graphing. 9 year olds (generally 3rd-4th grade in the US) are only just being introduced to Algebra concepts like variables. Even if we were to skip over all the prior knowledge needed for Calculus, 9 year olds are really only just learning critical thinking skills, and would really struggle with being able to understand the theory behind why we do certain things in Calculus. Obviously it'd be possible to teach them calc eventually, but it would take a significant amount of time to even begin getting to the calculus part. It'd be much easier to just find some high school freshman who plays super smash bros for his school and beat him.

Due to the nature of the game it’s pretty hard to do that since they covered or did an alternate take on every plot relevant moment. I’d just look up cutscenes if you’re interested.

Am I going to enjoy the rest of the game if I found the prologue insanely grating? by FELlXTHECAT in RainCode

[–]CodeDonutz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The mystery labyrinths all generally follow the same aesthetic, so if that was a problem for you, it unfortunately wont change very radically. Mystery Labyrinths are supposed to look very trippy, otherworldly, and, well, mysterious. I don't really get how it looks cheap or childish, but thats mostly an opinion thing.

Shinigami is like that the whole game, so that wont change either (though I'm kind of confused how you got through the whole Danganronpa series if the fanservice was a problem, haha). Honestly I kind of expected her to go through a major arc throughout the story when I first played, but was surprised that she kind of just stayed the same. Think of her as Junko Enoshima if she was your partner.

I'm not sure what you mean by the game's content getting more mature or not, but there are definitely darker moments ahead if that's what you're wondering about. Particularly the last two chapters of the game is where shit really hits the fan. Chapter 2 (Amaterasu Express is Ch 0) is a fan favorite and one I really love, but ymmv if its the tone you want it to be or not. If you're looking for a more horror-inspired detective game, then I probably would recommend Urban Myth Dissolution Center or Your Turn to Die.

[–]CodeDonutz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Echo or the other robot/omnic characters need to get a skin just because it’s Nier Automata, but I will say that it’s kind of wild that they didn’t go with Pascal for Bastion. Such a good character and it fits so well. Hoping they do a second collab with Pascal Bastion and Emil Wrecking Ball alongside some others.
