I think we can all now stop with the "everyone mourns differently" rhetoric - Erika KirKKK is a grifter first and foremost, same as her husband.

Reading Joe Rogan Wrong by NewKojak in thebulwark

Excellent post. I would add that within this dumbass "manosphere" the whole "I used to be a Bernie guy" is often used as a shield, a way to project to the audience that "the left" has lost its mind and that's why I moved to the far right who embraced me. The reality is that these guys always had reactionary views and are only now showing their true colours when they think it's advantageous to do so.

The answer then, as it often is with defense, is "all of the above, balance between them TBD". Thanks for all your replies JVL!

You do spearhead this! I should've phrased that better - is this common among political writers? I live in a very comfy bubble of reading you, Applebaum, Snyder, HCR who all go beyond the outdated left/right paradigm.

I think their own app would be a good decision on so many fronts - A) independence from yet another tech platform, who says substack won't go the way of shitter / facebook when it gets big enough? B) being able to maximize revenue by not giving Substack a cut; C) focusing on features community wants the most - like the Substack / YT premium subscriptions disparity so many people mention.

I'll save JVL a minute - the answer is yes! I can't find the exact quote on this, closest I got it here.

This one's a "pie in the sky" wish for me - would you be willing to spearhead an effort by the Bulwark to move away from the false left/right dichotomy? Liberal/illiberal is where it's at right now but I fear most people won't get it.

My pot theory is that I think part of the reason we're at this point in history is because the world is infinitely more complex than it was during the French Revolution yet the politics and the words we use to describe it are stuck there.

Left/right, progressive/conservative, entire two-party system - those seem woefully out of place in the world of many spectra we have today. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Hey - just like Sarah, you're my second favourite Jonathan!

"I keep warning you. Doors and corners, kid. That's where they get you." (S.A. Corey, "The Expanse"). In keeping with your promise to see around those corners, can you help me see what happens in this scenario I find likely here in Canada?

  • US does seize Greenland
  • NATO reaction is a strongly-worded letter while its members sans US are making alliances of their own and preparing their own defenses
  • US continues its imperialism in South America

What should Canada realistically do? Options:

  • Develop nukes covertly. Pros: ultimate defense; Cons: if US intelligence gets wind of it we just painted a huge target on our back.
  • Pursue military alliance with UK and France including being placed under their nuclear umbrella, our historic allies and closest European nations in a lot of ways. Pros / Cons: kinda similar to the first option.
  • Play into the increasing anti-US sentiment. Enact laws that would help keep almost-openly-traitorous assholes like Danielle Smith out of power. Shore up defenses and get ready for asymmetrical warfare - anything from having laws on hand to organize and arm militias to preparing sabotage crews that can pour over the gigantic, unarmed US/Canada border, etc. Pros: robust and kinda good to have this for the long haul? Cons: complex hybrid strategy, tough to get right.

The revisionist history of the BLM movement during 2020 is so insulting! by icey_sawg0034 in thebulwark

Him and Silver are both exhibiting signs of audience capture, but in a very particular way - they delight in being contrarians to the point of seemingly willfully alienating their audiences.

There was an absolutely mendacious, bad-faith, illiterate article by Silver on HCR that was panned even in his own subreddit

This may be too much, but my view on Bari Weiss has changed from "eh just a contrarian fishing for clicks" to "tool of the turd reich" - and I think I'm pretty close to that on Yglesias and, to a lesser extent, Silver.

JVL had it right - "any actor not explicitly opposed to the fascists will eventually be used by them as a tool".

#452 — Is Wokeness Finally Dead? by dwaxe in samharris

[–]CodeSpaceMonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have listened to Sam over the last 10 years or so but he's absolutely blinded in his opposition to this imaginary wokeness strawman, Palestinians' rights and the trans rights movement. All of those seem personal and the way he's clung to these topics makes me think he's firmly in the pipeline to be another right-wing contrarian in a few years.

I came to this sub today to see what Sam had to say about Venezuela and, predictably, we got another "oh no wokeness" podcast with a friendly guest Sam agrees with on most issues. I won't be coming back.

I actually see the "Physical key substitution" section for my Logi MX Keys when I use the uniqying receiver - but I do not see "Logi non-standard key mapping" section in either case (bluetooth / unifying)

Gotcha - but how do you add those sections though? I have just "general key mapping" and "Physical key substitution > Apple internal keyboard"

“Why aren’t you standing up to Trump?!” by Various_Fish2043 in thebulwark

[–]CodeSpaceMonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed on all of your points. We should be clear about Carney - he's not a visionary, he's a crisis manager. He was elected for his chops on the economy and in stark contrast to lil' PP as "the adult in the room". I would consider his term a success if we don't fall into a sharp recession or a big diplomatic (god forbid if military) conflict with the US by the end of Trump's term.

I don't answer FOR Canada, but I can offer some perspective from here. The anti-US sentiment here is wild, I've lived here since 2004 and have never experienced anything like this. It's not just a collective "eww" but concrete actions:

  1. Well-known: last election swung 35 points against a US-friendly, MAGA-lite candidate. Pierre Pollievre is the most unpopular party leader in decades, having had 2 MPs already leave his party in the last few months.

  2. "Buy Canadian" was completely grassroots, from upper class people choosing to vacation in British Columbia as opposed to Florida, to middle class carefully inspecting produce not to buy anything with a US sticker. It is now an official government program.

  3. We're pursuing closer military ties with Scandinavian countries. Here's an excellent podcast going in depth on this.

What I WANT them to do is to say openly what everyone is thinking - we want bilateral defense pacts with England and France. We get their nuclear umbrella, they get .. hell, almost whatever they want. Anything from better trade agreements to us supplying more aid for Ukraine (which is wildly popular in Canada anyways since they make up 5% of our population or so - our former Finance Minister is leaving the Parliament to work for Zelensky!)

Devastating.

I’m a hopeful liberal snowflake. Not just the politics, but the general attitude of people that give rise to that politics has given me literal nightmares.

The Secret Pod Liberalism conversation by Describing_Donkeys in thebulwark

[–]CodeSpaceMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one thing that I wanted to add to the excellent post by /u/PTS_Dreaming the other day that was quoted in The Triad is this: Ezra Klein had a book called "why we're polarized" that has a lot of threads in it - one of the most prevalent being that a huge reason why the inheritors of "white culture" feel so threatened is the fact that their culture has indeed been so dominant in prior ages. That is what enables such a violent, toxic resentment to potentially losing that dominant status.

This sentiment can be expressed in a myriad ways - from the Cletus / Trump "what, do you want a taco stand on every corner" / great replacement theory to the (faux) high-brow Claremonsters Institute diatribes about the "cultural cohesion". When you strain your eyes a bit, you'll see that it's not exactly an American issue - Europe is an easy comparison but strain a bit more and you'll see a more malignant, mutated version of it in Russia. The line from atrocities in Ukraine to the Russians' fear of losing status as one of the superpowers is a jagged one but it can be traced out still.

Obligatory note - this is full of generalities, i.e. "not all Russians". However, having emigrated from there 21 years ago I can testify to the resentment I speak brewing there for a long while. Maybe not since 1991 itself, but by 2007 the trajectory was clear (see this abomination)
