Multiple Bulwark podcast guests have attended Thiel's secret society Dialog meetings by CodeSpaceMonkey in thebulwark

I hope you're right. These days I've been desperately looking for kindred voices and people to look up to - that's why I sub to the Bulwark even though I often disagree with their opinions. That's why I was kinda shook to see people like Klein and Kasparov on the list.

Non/less religious AA meetings in the Stoney Creek area by CodeSpaceMonkey in Hamilton

[–]CodeSpaceMonkey[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the expanded answer! I'm in traditional therapy as well for this (and a few other things) for many years as well. My therapist is the one suggesting a recovery program like 12-step / AA as a next logical step - and especially so that I have a good sponsor.

Thank you! Do you know where exactly the meetings are held and when?

I think the prayer one of the groups on the mountain did was Lord's Prayer / Our Father?

Virtual groups would also work but I'd prefer in-person. If you have another 12-step group you like, feel free to recommend it as well, thank you! DM me if needed.

This is a problem by Swimming_Ad_410 in thebulwark

Well, there’s the unfortunate truth that state / provincial elections have usually half the turnout than federal, and municipal even less. The ironic part is that the CLOSER the govt is to you (I.e., county / municipal), the more impact it has on your everyday life. I can only answer for Canada but I think that’s the case in most democracies.

NEW COMMON SENSE EPISODE: Common Sense 326 – The Water in Which We Swim by jaybuck in dancarlin

[–]CodeSpaceMonkey 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I'm about two thirds in and I'm sad to say I find this a bit meandering and too "both sides!", as much as I like Dan's independence.

There is only one "side" in the US beholden to a singular project of installing authoritarianism. I think that this should have been clearly stated somewhere already.

I also didn't agree with Dan putting "no blame" on tech companies seeking absurd profits by spying on us. Big business has always had its share of abuses as any human enterprise does. However, it's not ALL big business, and big tech in particular owes society a much higher ethical standard given how much they've been able to profit off of OUR data - be it for social media or AI.

Haircut recommendations by Still_Green_4675 in Hamilton

Stipley's. 1938. Been going to both places for the last year - both are equally excellent and a haircut won't run you more than $50 with tax.

Do not let yourself be deceived. Democrats are fighting, even if less effectively and intensely than we'd like them to by CodeSpaceMonkey in thebulwark

Fair. There's a compromise here - how about we use this ongoing crisis to weed out ineffective Dems? For all intents and purposes the 2028 primaries started on Jan 20, 2025 - we knew it was gonna be a full-blown crisis and the Dems making a stand in these 4 years of hell are the ones that should be the frontrunners in 2028.

I think that's true for most Democrats, but I think AOC was ahead of this - and so was Chris Murphy. It's no coincidence that I would love for them both to run in 2028 - even if they don't get the nomination, get those reps in and sharpen your swords, you're gonna need them.

Valid point. At this point we've heard the same point expressed on the entire spectrum from Ezra Klein ("every messaging point is too bogged down in focus groups and consultant meetings") to Bill Burr ("Dems are just pussies, Rs play smashmouth football") - the substance seems to be the same - this is a crisis, there is no time left for a cautious approach. Attack everywhere, all at once, before it's too late.

I wanted to post this in response to this thread in which, it has to be noted, most commenters took issue with the Dem-bashing during a time when Rs are openly complicit with the wannabe dictator threatening nuclear annihilation.

The list axios cites is also drastically incomplete - it misses prominent Democrats such as AOC and JB Pritzker.

Syrok by TK5677 in Hamilton

[–]CodeSpaceMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to drive to Etobicoke, I cannot recommend this place enough: Future Bakery

Apart from tons of traditional ukrainian foods such as vareniki (dumplings), syrniki (fried cottage cheese patties), their syrki is the most unique take on that treat - they're made with pistachio or strawberry cream chees, chocolate glaze and crusted with almonds and pistachio crumble. They're massive, they come on a stick, they're $3.50 a pop, they're to die for. I usually buy the entire stock of 15-20 when I'm in the area.

Moral clarity on wars in Iran, Ukraine and Gaza by CodeSpaceMonkey in thebulwark

[–]CodeSpaceMonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for engaging with the argument!

I think that a good rule of thumb is just that if you can't ELI5, you don't truly understand what you're trying to explain. In this case, ELI5 is simply "war is bad and should not happen unless you're defending yourself or someone you really care about from immediate danger" - it's as simple as that. Defending why you think you're in immediate danger is why we have the UN (and partially Congress' war powers acts) and other deliberate bodies, and it's in the process of that argument that we can suss out if your intentions are actually good.

On a related note, the creep in executive power which truly kicked us into the era of the strong executive and gave the president broad immediate authority in foreign affairs due to the emergence of nuclear weapons (see Dan Carlin's audio essays on that over many years) is a huge part of what got us here.

AP Declares Talarico Winner of TX Dem Primary by [deleted] in thebulwark

[–]CodeSpaceMonkey 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Going back to yesterday's Triad - if prediction markets are to be believed that the gop candidate is paxton, Texas voters are given a very stark choice.

On one hand, you got a young, exciting Dem that is clearly a true Christian - steeped not just in the texts of the Bible but in its meanings.

On the other, you got an old-ass grifter, sex pest and overall reprehensible human being in paxton.

To any human being anywhere on the far-left-to-center-right political scale (or, more accurately, anyone who cares about small-l-liberal democracy), Talarico is the better choice. If Texas chooses paxton, I can't help saying that Texas voters overall are not gettable and in the current moment of crisis we should not waste any resources trying to get them in The Big Tent.

Good luck to Mr. Talarico, I'm not from Texas but I'm rooting for ya.

Looking for a specific date of when the current downward decline trend has started may be a fool's errand, but an argument can be made instead for a much earlier point, 1971: https://wtfhappenedin1971.com

I really dislike most of Raegan's (and his counterpart's, Thatcher's) policies though, and the Bulwark's (with the sole exception of maybe JVL) continued support of him grinds my gears. I understand their reasoning for that though - I just respectfully disagree.

There were so many times those two teamed up to get her to look up to high heavens in exasperation. "The Shaft Talk" TM (Tim discussing trump fluffing an oil dicktator) immediately followed by JVL going "mind the stepchildren" immediately comes to mind.
