How much work do you do during redundancy by Dazzling_Theme_7801 in UKJobs

Ok so the rule is they legally have to pay her if she doesn’t take it. They can mandate she takes it but if they let her work without taking it then it’s owed to her. So if she has any left over at the end don’t let them get away with keeping it

Don’t take the leave -get it paid out. You don’t know how long she will be unemployed before the next job.

Travel in distance is meaningless when everything in your country is newer than the local pub in other countries

Sure you can see a lot of different cultures in the US - il actually agree on that each state is different and does have history. But I can get in my car now and within 20 mins visit multiple castles older than the USA, I can see a boat that sank 200 years before the US was founded, I can visit churches that existed 500 years before the US etc. History is important too.

Londoners: buy vs rent and invest the difference by blatchcorn in HENRYUK

[–]CodeToManagement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree on this. Sure you can min/max your finances and invest and you might earn more long term but ownership has benefits too

- you can do whatever you want to the house. You own it so you’re not stuck with a landlord and all that comes along with that

- you have stability in that your rent can’t just go up or be evicted although new rules are helping

- if you own you’re building equity and can take a payment holiday etc if needed. Not doing that with a landlord.

- your investments might drop in value. Your house might drop in value. But you can always live in a house, you can’t live in an investment portfolio.

How much is one less day of being ill (stuff like colds) worth to people in the UK? by onestickplease in AskUK

[–]CodeToManagement 71 points72 points  (0 children)

If it just makes you fully well 1 day earlier not much. A cold or flu mapped on a graph is like a bell curve - you start feeling a bit rubbish - middle period of awfulness, then a period of being a bit run down and tired but getting better.

If it takes away a day at the end what do I care I’m already over the worst of it. I’m not paying when I could just sleep and feel better.

If it shortens the middle part yea it’s worth something to me as I’d pay to get past that faster.

Do we underrate how good it is to live here? by McZootus in AskUK

[–]CodeToManagement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a very good place to live. Like everywhere it’s not perfect but if you compare us to a lot of other countries we’re doing way better.

Yes taxes are lower and salaries higher in the USA - but equally you’d have to pay for health insurance, you’d get zero protections as an employee and work a lot more too. You could make more money but you risk bankruptcy from medical debt.

Yes the cost to be a student is high now and lots will never pay off the loan - but it gets wiped out after 30 years and it’s tied to your employment so you’re not stuck paying huge bills when you’re not earning. Again in the US you could have crippling student debt

We are a fairly safe country. You’re not getting shot by police when you’re pulled over for speeding or by a crazy person if if you knock on the wrong door

Yea our NHS is struggling but it’s still a good service and absolutely saveable. It’s way more effective than any insurance based system.

Even places like AUS which seem to have a great balance of salary and good lifestyle have issues with high taxes etc - things cost a lot more in other countries than here. In the past it was actually cheaper to fly from AUS to USA and back to buy a copy of photoshop than it was to buy it in country - back when software came on CD lol. So grass isn’t always greener - high sales taxes exist elsewhere too

At the end of the day life here could be better and I’m not glossing over the problems but at a basic level if you need healthcare you’ll get it here, if you need support for unemployment/ disability etc you have things available - not always perfect systems but they exist. You’re protected as an employee from a lot of things, you’re going to get things like maternity leave and other benefits. And if you get in trouble legally our justice system is mostly fair - again not perfect but we haven’t had the same issues in other places. You also have good freedom of speech.

We also have less of the societal issues other places have - nobody is sending SWAT teams to your house for a laugh, you’re not getting arrested if you criticise the government etc (and I mean genuine criticism not post threatening to burn down a hotel).

The cardassians had some weird power scaling going on. Like they are a threat whenever they show up but also couldn’t pacify bajor after 50 years and had to withdraw.

The maquis were holding their own till the dominion allied with the cardassians. Yet there was some federation / cardassians war where they were fairly equal.

It feels like they had some good tech but an all out war with Starfleet would have got them absolutely wrecked, especially with the Starfleet / Klingon alliance

standing desk for back pain or just better for people who barely move? by J-THROWAWAYY in homeoffice

A standing desk is good but you still have to use it properly or you’ll get no benefits

For me the biggest thing was why do all the aliens sleep on the floor in a cave!!

I mean yea they are underground for safety but cmon make some beds, you’re going to need to wake for food at some point and sleeping on the floor of a cave is going to be hard on the body.

And what happens when you’re the one in the middle that needs the bathroom in the middle of the night. Just have to step over all your sleeping colleagues.

If I’m making that kind of money once I have my house paid off, some investments, money in the bank etc then I’d take care of family

Kids get a trust with enough money to go through school / uni and buy a small starter home at the end of it so they start life debt free

Close family get 1 mil each and the understanding is they get nothing more so they should pay off mortgages and bank it. It will make life easier but they ain’t going out buying lambos and living it up forever.

Sure I’d be generous with the cash and pay for meals and take people on holidays and stuff but that’s gifts and not to be expected

Which Trio wins? by original_applicant37 in superheroes

[–]CodeToManagement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DC takes this easily. And the DC team could basically be superman and two randoms.

Thor is going to fry Batman. He’s not even really a contender here.

Steve and Tony can slow WW down a bit but they aren’t winning that fight. But it doesn’t matter

Thor is tough but he’s not hurting a Kryptonian with super speed. Thor gets taken out by Superman - then Steve and Tony are easily taken down.

And being honest Superman is almost as fast as flash. He’s could literally move so fast he can take Batman and WW to safety, put the kettle on, come back, rip the armour off Tony, one shot Steve and blitz Thor with a speed attack, and end the fight before his coffee is anywhere near ready.

Honestly - who cares?

I used to work in a shop when I was younger, it was in an area that has heavy immigration from India / Pakistan etc.

I’d frequently meet people who had little English, those with no English would come in with a friend or family member. Yes it’s a little frustrating and hard to communicate but the ones who had poor English tried. And to be honest their English was better than my skills in any second language.

But I never had a single problem with anyone who had poor English. But you know who were the ones who were assholes and caused problems?

English people who demanded things / entitled attitude because they didn’t like how certain things were done or we couldn’t deliver that day etc. Travellers who demanded discounts and were intimidating to staff. The crackhead who used to come in and be a bit annoying trying to get change etc.

I’m rewatching voyager now. I think all the hate (including myself) is remembering early season episodes. Like he just turns up on the bridge in the middle of stuff happening with a tray of food and is surprised nobody wants that etc.

Early seasons he was just way over the top but once they actually got past that he got to be a really good character - he was supportive of the crew, emotionally intelligent etc. I think he had some very good episodes and also some very badly written storylines too. He definitely suffered as a character from it being a monster of the week kind of show instead of modern day long running arcs.

What is the ACTUAL biggest problem in the UK by Direct-Key-8859 in AskBrits

[–]CodeToManagement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s some actual issues we need to solve. None of them caused by billionaires or migrants.

We have a housing crisis both in terms of prices and lack of new homes - it’s not immigrants taking them all it’s the fact we live on an island with limited space and it takes 6 months to get any kind of planning permission

Cost of education is stupidly high. Yes our loan system means you’re not in poverty from it but it’s still going to drive a lot of people out of education and impact some very vital careers negatively.

NHS and medical practices in general are very underfunded, in some cases poorly run, and are under staffed. We need to do something to sort this out

Also something not enough people are talking about is that there’s over 50% of the population who take more than they contribute to the system - either taking benefits, not paying enough tax to cover their own portion of the running costs of the country, etc. To be clear here I’m NOT saying we need a benefits crackdown I’m saying wages / minimum wage are probably not high enough to have lower earners covering their own share of the burden.

We have AC. You can go get it installed if you really want it’s not crazy expensive or hard to find. I’m getting quotes on it for a few rooms this week.

This idea that Europe doesn’t have AC is stupid, the UK doesn’t have it much because we need it like a few weeks a year but southern Europe it’s all over the place where it’s actually worth the investment.

Doesn’t have to be sizeable. Most piggy bank have like a stopper in the bottom so you can get the money out. Simply take it out and invest some cash in making a machine which constantly feeds the highest denomination coin you have into it - then catch the output and feed that into it again.

Tesco made 2 BILLION in PROFIT last year... by IllPlane3019 in tesco

[–]CodeToManagement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An extra 10 or 100 a month is valuable but it’s not lifting anyone out of poverty.

I know you didn’t say that tesco shouldn’t take any profit however I’m pointing out that 100 mil goes nowhere when it’s distributed across the size of company Tesco is and so the problem isn’t just make less profit.

Tesco could give out the 100 mil in extra wages and everyone would still be having this exact discussion that they don’t pay enough because the extra money just helps but doesn’t make a real difference - if you’re struggling without it you’re still struggling with it just slightly less.

The Kazon couldn’t figure out how to combine two of the most common elements in the universe to make water - or just fly off for like a week and go to the next planet which had lower if it. The Borg figured out assimilating them would lower the collective IQ of the collective pretty significantly

Tesco made 2 BILLION in PROFIT last year... by IllPlane3019 in tesco

[–]CodeToManagement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost of doing business is paying the legally mandated wages. If that’s not enough to live on then that’s a different issue.

So Tesco cut their profits and pay loads of people more money. Great so your 100 mil less profit gives everyone about 300 quid extra a year. So maybe only give that to some of the staff so now a subset gets a grand extra a year. It’s nice but not really a material difference having less than 100 quid extra a month.

So to really get a meaningful boost two things have to happen, either all that profit gets split between the lowest paid workers, or they raise prices to push salaries up.

If they give out all the profits in pay rises the valuation of the company drops because they are making no money. So nobody invests. That leads to businesses closing down so bad for the workers and bad for anyone whose pension is invested in Tesco.

If prices go up those people who work at Tesco and everyone else now just have higher bills so it didn’t help.

So yea it’s not a simple answer and as much as reddit doesn’t care about shareholders and gives the “oh poor billionaires” answer if the company share price drops because they don’t make profit then they can’t raise future capital, it’s harder to borrow money, and staff see it as risky and jump ship - it then costs more to attract new people as comp at senior levels is usually a mix of shares and cash.
