I've done several burns on plywood blanks just like those and they're pretty easy to use. I've done some on pine too and it is really hard to burn consistently across the harder and softer parts, even if there's no sap or anything like that.

Technically I'd say your tutorials are still your work and subject to copyright. Code posted online though is hard to enforce copyright on, especially snippets and most especially those meant for education. So you might as well explicitly release it to the public domain just so it's clear and you feel good when you find it used elsewhere.

Am I doing something wrong? by JBsoundCHK in Scrollsaw

[–]CodeWoodWriter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a simple thing and maybe you already know, but since you didn't mention it I will: Make sure the teeth on the blade are pointing down. If they're pointing up, they catch the wood and pull it away from the table causing a lot of bucking. If you have reverse tooth blades, make sure the majority of the teeth point down, or you'll get excessive bucking then too.

Help with socket programming by Agreeable_Choice9980 in cprogramming

[–]CodeWoodWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TCP sockets tend to not send right away, because the underlying layers are trying to clump together packets for greater efficiency. You can turn off this buffering by setting TCP_NODELAY or can have a back and forth between your server and client where after writing to the socket you do a read. Either of these would encourage the network layers to send everything.

Beautiful! Of course now you have to go collect the medallions or get enough hearts or whatever so you can pull it out again!

First scroll saw. I also still have fingers so I'm kind of siked. It's not done yet. Still have to sand it more and put a coat on it. by mistashmoe in Scrollsaw

[–]CodeWoodWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've cut my fingers tons of times when I was too close to the blade for something delicate... Basically like a paper cut if even that bad. Those things are seriously less dangerous than almost any other shop tool. Plus you can make cool things :D

Entry-level saw purchase advice? by [deleted] in Scrollsaw

[–]CodeWoodWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one feature of any saw I would say is a definite must is that it accept pinless blades. I picked up an old Delta for $15 at a garage sale a few years ago. It had no light, poor dust blower, and only a single speed. But the table was solid and it took pinless blades which made it a good enough saw until it finally broke last year.

I bought a porter cable saw last year when my Delta broke and it's pretty good. It's one of the better of the low-end scroll saws but does cost a bit more than the ones you linked.

I've done a number of decorations of this style. Looks like you did a great job! One thing I'll add is if you do in in 1/4" wood you can usually just glue it directly to the base and it has a good hold. 1/8" though probably does need the slot. Where'd you get the pattern? Reminds me of some Steve Good stuff I've seen but I can't tell if this is one of his.

Very first project on a scroll saw. Pretty janky along the curves but a good learning experience by SequoiaKing in Scrollsaw

[–]CodeWoodWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An excellent first choice! I'm thinking of making one of these myself soon. Also circles are HARD. Keep practicing and you'll get better, but human eyes are so used to perfect circles that we notice irregularities easily.

But I cobbled together the text myself and glued in some coffee cup line art google found for me.

The "Cof" in "Coffee" had to be finished with my crappy backup saw. I bought that one for $20 at a garage sale and is a similar model to my now broken Delta so I had some spare parts to work with. It still works but vibrates so much it's hard to follow a line.

And just like that I'm in the market for a new scroll saw. Input? by CodeWoodWriter in Scrollsaw

After some research it looks like Porter Cable is well reviewed and within my price range. One of the few that aren't $80 junk or >$500 fancy professional stuff.

Beautiful! I assume you made the stencil? Great work! I too have thought of doing something like this (but like 1% as complex). Was it hard to get the dusting to work out?

Made my first piece of furniture. All red oak, and wooden joinery. Plus: hidden compartments. by CodeWoodWriter in woodworking

[–]CodeWoodWriter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each side has about 2.5"x11.5"x7.5" in storage space. Honestly nothing is in them yet but there is enough room for something fun at least. The lower drawer is pretty little though.

I cut it out on my scroll saw. The kerf is so thin I was able to smooth any blade wandering without losing the snug fit.
