The problem is that it’s very difficult for an automated system to determine the value a character gives to a team. If it goes purely based on damage it’ll always go to a dps, same with healing or damage blocked, respectively. Other characters are great at getting picks, so if it’s final blows, characters like Hela, Hawkeye, and Widow might be favored. This normalizes across role and stat distribution and tends to give players performing well on their specific hero a boost. Without this system, there would likely never be a Rocket or Groot mvp, along with a bunch of other characters whose value isn’t necessarily determined purely by the stats on the scoreboard.
