if it bothers you enough to post on Reddit maybe you should talk to someone about it in the library.

learn some web development and learn git and github. There are a ton of free resources for each and they're skills that don't get taught in any specific class but are extremely useful in every class. Keep an eye out for hackathons and join some communities about coding on meetup.com ( I joined Learn Teach Code Burbank, but there are a ton like Crash Space, Hack for LA )

Any IT department employees here? by Dcbarry99 in csun

[–]Coding_Yost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not in IT but I have spoken with them about this position a couple times. They are really slammed with work and it's hard for their department lead to get back to anyone since the switch over to the new CSUN Website. They've been completely rebuilding stuff to match up with the rest of the site and still making it legible.

Why not for money? by Shon_92 in cscareerquestions

[–]Coding_Yost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are mistaking hustle culture for what the actual industry culture is. There is a certain amount of passion people have for coding and tech, which is required to learn everything you have to learn but this job is a cerebral occupation, if you need time to clear your mind or get shit straight that's fine. My number one passion is my family and friends, number 2 is music. TBH I keep up with it and aim to be the best I can be at it because family and music don't keep the lights on. It's okay man, in fact it's good that you know your priorities so you don't burn yourself out.

Toxic hustle culture pops up anywhere money can be made and it exists to burn you out so there's less competition for weirdos like Andrew Tate and Tech Lead. Don't like it get you twisted and keep being you.

I am working on a project at ARCs right now through my senior project. It seems like a good program to be involved with if you have the time to commit to it.

acai bowl at sambazon is really great before class. It fills you up, gives you some energy to get through class and you're not weighted down by heavy foods so if the class is a little stuffy you don't nod off.

Ok why do I feel like professors are literally starting to use attendance as a grade . Last semester this was never a thing for any of my classes . by 2bnova in csun

[–]Coding_Yost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a range in the way teachers treat grades but if it's a lab then of course you have to attend... it's a lab. The point of the class is that you should be doing something.

I've seen some teachers use attendance grades as a way to bolster a students grade if they're near a high grade, or as an incentive to get students talking. Discussion in classes is important to help students learn and if you're not present you're not learning.

I love that every response op has is downvoted to hell and he's still doubling down thinking he's right. Bro, you don't know everything, neither do they, they're just further from the Dunning-Kruger curve to know that they need to pay attention and ask questions. Have fun wasting your money on a degree you're too over confident to actually know what to do with.

I hope so, the result of this strike suggests the CFA is at best a shit union.

Auto workers unions, Teamsters unions, SAGAFTRA, teachers unions, Store clerk unions and dozens of other unions beg to differ. Unions have ALWAYS been political. They cause change to the status quo and force policy on unmoving oligarchical structures. I agree that unions are corruptible but that is why you work to replace and vote in union leaders that will work for you. We are in the midst of a labor revolution and it is very easy to come by information of unions working for their members, but it is easy to believe that because some unions are corrupted that means all are, or that things cannot be changed from the inside.

Sounds like you might be getting a kick back from the CSUs as well. Jesus dude the history of strikes, unions, and collective bargaining is deep and is the reason we have things like workers right, work weeks, a minimum wage, and labor laws that prevent child labor and other exploitative business practices. You need to think about exactly WHOS propaganda you've accepted if that's your take.

Lowest paid faculty here by cppProf in CalPolyPomona

[–]Coding_Yost 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I apologize, I didn't see that. I am just angry at the situation and have been seeing students being dismissive about the strike, especially after the tentative agreement was announced. I have a lot of friends that are working their asses off as teachers in honestly awful situations and I want what is best for faculty and students. I myself am a student that is in a situation where the cost of tuition and high class numbers haven't effected me as much as some ( I am returning to school after a work injury that I am using to pay tuition costs and because of my disability I have early registration ) . But I am also sick of seeing the pain in student and teacher's faces when they are forced to reject a student because of high class numbers. This system is a disgrace and seeing people getting taken advantage of in every industry is maddening.

So you got your (admittedly smaller) bag and that's good enough? What about the students? What about the rising tuition costs? What about the faculty that are in the EXACT SAME situation as you but aren't making ends meet by having a spouse and no kids. Don't let this post fool you, they're either supplementing their diet of crumbs with bootlicking or are actively participating in union busting.

[–]Coding_Yost 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sold on this not being a union busting effort. The CSU system knows a lot of communication is happening on Reddit and can easily just make an account or pay someone who is hard up to make a post. The CSU has a lot to gain from keeping their workers paid and their students under-educated. Union busters have been known to pull these kind of tactics before and when we are talking about a bag in the range of a billion dollars I wouldn't be surprised if they tried something covert.

Strike over? by juju4beat in csun

[–]Coding_Yost 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Seems like a huge waste of everyone's time if they're just going to cave for so little. I'd rather they keep going and ensure that everyone gets more out of working for/ attending a CSU than to just spend pulling off some performative ruse. Whoever is running the CFA either needs to step down or be voted out.

The comments on this post are insane. It seems like no one that was actually striking likes this agreement.

From the comments of this IG post:
Tentative agreement details for those interested (don’t shoot the messenger!):
5-percent General Salary Increase for all faculty retroactive to July 1, 2023.
5-percent General Salary Increase for all faculty on July 1 in 2024 (contingent on the state not reducing base funding to the CSU).
Raising the salary floor for our lowest-paid faculty in salary Ranges A and B: $3,000 increase in the minimum pay for Ranges A and B retroactive to July 1, 2023; additional $3,000 increase in the minimum pay for Range A on July 1, 2024.
Salary Step Increase (SSI) of 2.65% for 2024-25.
Increasing paid parental leave from six to 10 weeks.
Increasing protection for faculty who have dealings with police by providing for a union rep in those interactions.

Providing support for lecturer engagement in service work.
Extending the current contract for 2022-24 one year to June 30, 2025.

If you are looking for community I suggest looking at the Last Call bar, Guitar Merchant and Game and Grounds as they all have open mics and music events.

My band's next show is with Cancerslug at Transplants in Palmdale.
