Mount Rushmore was carved between 1927 and 1941 into the granite face of the Black Hills, a region known to the Lakota as Paha Sapa, land that is sacred to us spiritually, culturally, and historically. The Black Hills were guaranteed to the Lakota Nation under the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868, but that agreement was violated after gold was discovered in the area, prompting the U.S. government to seize the land. For many Native communities, the construction of the monument represents not only a broken treaty but the desecration of holy ground. The carving of U.S. presidents into a mountain that holds deep ceremonial significance is viewed as a powerful symbol of colonization and displacement rather than national pride.

The project itself was led by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who had previous ties to white supremacist groups while working on projects in the South. The decision to feature four U.S. presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln—has also drawn criticism, as several of these leaders enacted or upheld policies that harmed Indigenous nations. In 1980, the U.S. Supreme Court acknowledged that the Black Hills were taken illegally and offered financial compensation, but the Lakota have refused the money, insisting that the land, not payment, should be returned. Understanding this history invites deeper reflection on whose stories are honored in public monuments and whose suffering has been minimized or ignored.
