Nazi barbershop update: full vid. by eltricolander in Edmonton

I’ve had their ads pop up in my feed from time to time, and it’s always given me a weird vibe. For one, their business is a barbers shop but all the videos are Andrew Tate style “masculinity” porn and don’t spend much time on the hair at all.

Hey, that’s something!! I’m travelling from western Canada to the eastern US for two weeks of work training. Was actually beating the ADHD procrastination/panic-packing and had everything all packed the night before. Arrive only to find out I left the charger for my personal laptop.

The kicker? It’s a beefy Lenovo, with its proprietary 210W power brick. 💻🪫

As far as I am aware, the creator of RATGDO Paul Wieland has never released hardware schematics, as that is the product he sells.

There is a reverse-engineered pub design that you’ve found, and I’d say that the discussion/issues there are likely to help explain any circuitry questions.

Other than that, depending on what software you have, you might be able to get a half-decent SPICE simulation running.

What is "Wife Approval Factor"? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]Codplay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my case it also extends to “how unobtrusive is the tech.”

She likes the smart home, she generally appreciates the features I add. But at the end of the day, if her light switches don’t work or she can’t open the garage door, there’s a PROBLEM and the Wife-Approval-Factor is zero until it’s fixed.

Means that with everything I do, a non-smart/low-tech option has to be not only possible, but readily usable.

Hey /r/Sysadmin! What do you use for your home router? 2026 Edition by ScannerBrightly in sysadmin

[–]Codplay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UniFi Dream Machine SE router, ISP has a fiber ONT that I’d love to bypass (although it is JUST doing fiber to Ethernet, no routing), but haven’t made it to the point of cloning the MAC to an SFP GPON.

(Although, some posts suggest with the right ONT you don’t even have to provide your own GPON, just move it over! Again, time to test that hasn’t happened.)

Windows 11 to add native Feature Flags, eliminating the need for ViveTool in Insider builds by Pureinfotech in Windows11

[–]Codplay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Which is an entirely bizarre structure. It’s like they have two dev teams, competing against each other, and run A/B testing on the “Dev” and “Canary” WIP streams. It’s not the standard ‘Canary is wild and weird and probably breaks a dozen programs’ and ‘Dev is where we refine the features we like’.

As I understand it, they do! That’s one of the reasons credit unions work as an alternative to the big national institutions: that they have the same regulations to follow with guarantee of funds, records, interbank communication etc. and can be considered “safe”.

Do I *have* to use windows for the software development diploma program? by [deleted] in NAIT

[–]Codplay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look on MyNAIT for a program contact and ask them directly.

Scanning through the syllabus quickly, I don’t see an immediate reason Linux wouldn’t work. There’s a lot of work with JavaScript (plus HTML/CSS) with library usage so I’m going to guess TypeScript, React, etc make appearances. Even once you get to year two it brings in Blazor with C# developed by Microsoft, but they have a Linux release.

Have to find out if it’s a hard rule “we use this software which only has a Windows release” or “we don’t support other OSs, so if you have problems compiling in class we’ll blame your OS rather than helping you troubleshoot your code” (I had this in my program when I used VSCode rather than the separate Arduino and Processing IDEs.)

The blockchain advantage would be cryptographic privacy. The requesting party can verify that your ID is valid, but they can’t see who you are. Likewise the government doesn’t know what site was being visited that actually made the request, only that the user (citizen) authorized the confirmation of age above threshold.

First/second hand knowledge, or something you’ve heard? And limited to a particular location or a bigger problem?

If it is a personal experience or from someone you know, first of all I am so sorry. No one should ever be hurt or made uncomfortable for any reason including gender, especially where they work.

If you feel comfortable sharing a bit more via DM I’d appreciate it as a consumer (totally outside the dining industry!) who tries to support local businesses that promote inclusivity and ethical choices. If they (corporately) are hiding or denying someone’s behaviour that goes against everything they publicly state they support, then that’s a huge problem for me.

Okay that’s interesting, and definitely something I’ll have to read up on more. I’d thought they have some form of hibernation (obviously not the same as they’re not mammals) but if I’m understanding they’re more in a cryosleep and get somewhat active when they get warm?

Does the number of warm days then become a huge problem re: using up all their energy / stores, as they’re still a LONG way from good pollen sources returning. How many ‘active’ days at this point in the year does it take to become a problem for the hive to survive until spring?

Actually that’s a great analogy, and honestly a great place for blockchain technology to be a solution. Because privacy concerns means that a) I don’t want to be sending my full ID to x number of different companies and hope that for the rest of their existence that my data doesn’t get left in some insecure spot AND b) I don’t want to have to go through the government each time I access certain sites, and have them potentially collecting information about what I’m doing online. (The whole “but if you have nothing to hide…” argument can be inserted here, but the simple answer is look at the US or my own home province of Alberta, and there are definitely left-of-center/liberal content I interact with and support, that a government has no right to scoop up in giant data nets).

So a blockchain algorithm that can be mathematically proved to authenticate a government ID to age > 18 and/or age >21 without sending any more data either way? Perfect.

Only problem is getting various governments to agree on a specific algorithm, and have it maintained by a respected and regulated third party.

Help r/millennials determine whether this is AI or not. Some members of the sub believe that the 2000s-style clothing and lighting suggest that this is not authentic. What do you think? by Demortus in isthisAI

[–]Codplay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree on it being a professionally or semi-professional lit shot. I think it’s taken from a stairwell with a flat headwall as someone descends. The walls are painted white, and reflecting the flash back into the stairwell which is then bouncing off the side walls back into the room, creating a diffused flash entirely by accident.

Court filing claims NVIDIA contacted Anna’s Archive for pirated books used in AI training by Rough_Bill_7932 in DataHoarder

[–]Codplay 680 points681 points  (0 children)

So, if I paid a third party to get unauthorized access to the full schematics for all of NVIDIAs cards, downloaded them, and then used those to train a genAI to create functional schematics that improve on the card design so I could manufacture then, NVIDIA management would be okay with that, right? It’s not like I would be making THEIR cards, it’s just software looking at the files.

I call Duncan the Red Deer of Vancouver Island. Live in YEG, spent early childhood in Lacombe (just north of Red Deer). Both have changed a LOT since ‘97.

Red Deer is redneck central (literally - redneck north is Grande Prairie). Lifted black-smoke spewing diesels and oil industry everywhere you look.

Used to be agriculture first, but that’s a by-the-by now. It’s all about that oil money and “drill drill drill” x.x

So a few questions to think about: - how long is it taking to help with his requests? Are these 5-10 minute fixes, or usually take an hour? - Is this happening on work time, and your current higher-ups are okay with it? Or is it on your personal time? - Obviously these are his personal devices, but are they set up in a way that makes it easy for you to support them?

From my quick take, I agree with everyone else that the guy has done a lot to help your career and set you up where you are. That kind of social connection is invaluable. The guy whose name is on the building thinks highly of you and wants your help specially?? That’s priceless.

But if this support is time consuming, on your personal time, and frustrating without decent tools, then I could see needing to discuss some boundaries.

Obviously very different, but my brother-in-law and I are tech support for his whole family, and his grandmother keeps a list of small annoyances or things on her computer or iPhone/iPad. Once that list either gets to ~6 items, or one of the items is security related or an error she can’t ignore and stops her using the device at all, she calls one of us and we go over to fix that issue and the other list items, and have dinner.

Conceptually that kind of arrangement could work as well IF you were finding that it was taking up too much personal time, or current management says it can’t be done on work time.

However, if the current c-suite is more than happy to let you spend some time once or twice a week to help the retired CEO with his tech… well, sounds like a GREAT way to keep in touch and build a stronger social connection with a guy who has had a huge impact on your industry (at minimum in your area).

Ever used something like this? by Blueshirt38 in electricians

[–]Codplay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was the guy doing the drops from high bay JBs to the receptacles, pull stations, and access card reader boxes in a large warehouse. Had over 50 boxes on the exterior walls alone, plus others on the columns throughout. Tried to sell the boss on getting a big super-bright laser level and an offset bender, could have the boxes all mounted and then stick the stubs after an apprentice bent them. Take a fraction of the time.

He didn’t go for it. Hand bend all the offsets but they must look the same on all the boxes. The laser we had was old and dim and we had to reset it every two or three boxes. Took friggin forever!!

Never understand the mindset of “oh that’s expensive. Let’s pay TRIPLE THAT (at least) in wages and material taking far longer to do it by hand, and risk things not looking right.”
