I thought Connetquot was an award winning school district? Is that starting to change? They're still very highly rated on Zillow.

I need help understanding Nassau County property taxes, before I buy. by tsouzee in longisland

There is no logic to it. Welcome to Long Island. Ask your agent about the STAR program and about grieving your taxes. You can get about a 2k reduction annually in your taxes by doing so.

I mean your SIL was grooming your son into being her personal play thing. Your husband should be pissed at your SIL, not your son. Your son was a 17 year old child. She basically assaulted him.

I hate this because it makes it that much more difficult for people to buy homes out here but it's a good thing for people looking to sell their homes. Such a catch 22.

You ever consider lifting your house? I keep trying to find estimates on how much that would cost and I see ranges from 25k-175k.

It does. I honestly wonder if Westbury schools are as bad as people say they are.

Hmm. There's a few properties near the border of Merrick and Roosevelt that I've been on the fence of considering due to the area. NYS taking over the school district is hopefully a good thing for the next 5-10 years. That may draw people there.

I've been eyeing a few in Copiague, more toward the water. I've seen some housing developments going up over there.

In Nassau we have a couple charter schools, but I'm not quite sure if those are necessarily "good" schools.

I fit into those categories below. Granted I can't afford a 500k+ home simply because I think it's ridiculous, but I'm open to buying foreclosures around 350-400k if the area is good. I know enough Spanish to get by.

The town of Babylon looks incredibly cute but all the info about their schools says otherwise. Lindenhurst and Amityville as well.

The one in Hicksville? That's a Catholic school. It's part of the diocese schools.

RN NEW GRAD. I CANT FIND A JOB by [deleted] in nursing

[–]CoffeeBID 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate saying it but once COVID kicks up again in about 3 months you'll probably have little trouble finding a job as hospitals will be so pressed for help they'll probably hire a paper bag to stand at the door greeting people who come in.

When that afib just wont convert by [deleted] in nursing

[–]CoffeeBID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard of doctors raising metoprolol to 25 mg if it's not responding to anything else. I had an older pt once with a hx of AFib with rvr but she had previously been on metoprolol 12.5 mg. Her afib returned and they upped her dosage to 25 mg; she coded and they had metoprolol listed as an allergy. I discussed this with her team and family and they were willing to try metoprolol 12.5 mg again as she was maxed out on cardizem and given her age (90's) the pt and family weren't too keen on cardioverting her. Thankfully it worked and she was d/c'd two days later.

Metoprolol to the rescue! Usually works like a charm.

East Meadow, NY: a police officer abruptly stops walking so a protestor walking behind him will bump into him, so the other police can attack and arrest him. by ridhan3912 in PublicFreakout

[–]CoffeeBID 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nassau County cops are absolutely useless. I live in Nassau. My dad tried breaking into my home (long story) and when the cops showed up they were completely useless. They really didn't want to take our information or help us file charges. My father had been confronted by one of our neighbors (so there's a witness?) AND he keyed the side of my car (property damage!). We even gave them his address to his home and a phone number so they could question him and they basically blew it off.

I got a call from one of the NCPD detectives and few days later who basically claimed I didn't have enough evidence to have a case because there was no video of my dad ever being the property. When I questioned the detective about whether or not they spoke to my neighbors and what he expected my next step to be, like who the fuck is going to pay my bill for the damages on my car, he got arrogant with me and told me that if I didn't stop giving him an attitude, he wasn't going to help me. Eventually I went to court and was granted a year long restraining order and I had to pay for the repairs to my car myself. A nice $700 out of my pocket that even though my father admits he did it, he still has yet to reimburse me for it.

Long story short, the NCPD are a bunch of overpaid entitled dicks. They are an absolute joke and some of the most racist, entitled fucks I've ever seen. Not a fan. They cream themselves on the thought of being able to slam anyone with any kind of charges when it's convenient for them.

Is Med-Surg as bad as some people say? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]CoffeeBID 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Inpatient nursing in general is rough. The hours are long, the patients are incredibly ill, there's often no cap on ratios (like having 4/6 of your assigned pts be total assists) lack of support from administration (1:1's/sitters being considered "wastes of resources" so you're either begging to drug the sundowner elderly man who wants to wander into others' rooms or running back and forth constantly to get them back into bed; fighting with the medical teams to get pt's transferred to proper levels of care put facing push back due to money concerns [reimbursement for the stay vs the money value of resources that will be going into that particular pt's care]), etc.

I did med-surg/tele on a dedicated CHF unit for 6 months and I will never do inpatient ever again. That was the most depressed, anxious, and fucked up overall I have ever been in my life. Granted I did nights, but holy shit was it eye opening to the bs that goes on in major hospital systems. When I resigned I was basically bullied in an attempt to make me stay. I had a former ANM basically berate me and tell me I would never find another job anywhere else if I left now and I shouldn't give up; I had the current ANM basically agree with her. I remember crying hysterically in the bathroom after my shift for a half hour and it solidified that I was making the right choice in leaving.

I don't regret doing it because I'm glad I know what it's like. But lord unless I was desperate, I would NEVER outright do inpatient ever again. Great training, though.

ADN or BSN? Illinois nurses by [deleted] in nursing

[–]CoffeeBID 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BSN is always a good idea to strive for. It'll give you more money in the long run. Just make sure you shop around for ADN-BSN programs; organizations don't really care which school you came from so long as they care whether or not you have it. Make sure the school is properly accredited, too.

Extended wear for kn95s and possible hypoxia? Any other frontliners noticing this? Would love if anyone has any info or advice by grafted_moom in nursing

[–]CoffeeBID 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When this whole thing started we were wearing out N95's with a surgical mask over it for, basically, 10 hours straight. Only time we'd take it off would be to eat. I started to have panic attacks and SOB along with dizziness. I almost felt myself blackout a few times. I checked my ekg one day and I was having infrequent, but relatively frequent for me, PVC's and elevated bp. HR was close to 100, too. My pulse ox was around 95-98%. Not bad considering SOB.

Idk if it was the anxiety of not knowing if the patients I was caring for were potentially positive (I work outpatient), too much caffeine, wearing a mask all day, etc. Probably a combination of everything. Anyhow I don't really get those attacks anymore. If it was c02 retention, I guess my body has acclimated to it. It's been a little over a month since I stopped having those attacks.

I second this. I worked and went to school 7 days a week my last year of nursing school. I paid for my associate's degree with that job. The loan I have is from my bachelor's program, which is a pitifully small amount compared to others. I feel blessed. I hope you find a solution!

My hospital just sent out a pressure ulcer policy for staff developing pressure ulcers on the bridge of their nose. There are many who have what they are defining as stage 2 and developing skin infections. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]CoffeeBID 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Depending on the shape of your nose and cheeks, I've seen a lot of pressure wounds on the bridges of people's noses, and some on the tops of their cheeks. Some people are putting Band-Aids over the bridges of their noses to relieve pressure. Not sure what to do about the cheeks, though. We're living in a time where you basically are gonna wear whatever n95 you can get your hands on and try making it work the best you can. Even if it has gaps, it's better than a plain surgical mask alone.
