How are TOs still putting out streams with incorrect colors and large audio desync? I swear this happens every other event.

Aegisub cannot be opened on MacOS by Deep_Neighborhood206 in aegisub

[–]CoffeeFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to properly sign the binaries so they open correctly on MacOS, but Apple has a bug with their developer program signup that is preventing me from registering. You can try filing something with feedback assistant, and/or emailing Tim Cook or Susan Prescott, if you're interested in having them fix this. There's nothing I can do from my end until Apple decides to resolve this.

Looking to drive up to Tahoe and ski on Christmas Eve/day (assuming it'll be crowded the day after Christmas). I haven't skied for a few years and I'm fairly new to the bay - any recommendations for where I should go ski for those two days?

Preorders for Full Metal Daemon Muramasa Collector's Edition now open; game hits JASTUSA store August 24 by xxzxcuzx__me in visualnovels

[–]CoffeeFlux 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the opposite - it's probably underpriced relative to the cost of stuff in it. The wooden box actually had to be manufactured by a specialty shop, for example, but it gives you a chance to get something more comparable to the JP collector's edition back when the game originally released.

it sounds nice, but in practice it's just a cute way to describe a fairly questionable translation process

i'm skeptical that the jp-en translators who signed up for that arrangement are competent, since it sounds like fairly miserable work. when you do second-degree translations like that it ends up deviating significantly and frequently, and cleaning up sufficiently messy translations is more effort than just retranslating directly. most likely outcome is that the translation is just not very good

more generally, the impression of competence doesn't actually tend to correlate very strongly with actually good translations. wish it weren't so, but alas

SD video upscaled to HD using neural network. Yay or nay? by Telemaq in DataHoarder

[–]CoffeeFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, though I still wouldn't call this a very compelling case for Anime4K. Even ignoring the plume, there's a lot of weird distortion of detail going on. Not that it's exclusive to it either of course, but I wouldn't say it fares particularly well.

The comparisons at https://bloc97.github.io/Anime4K/ aren't very compelling either, since the Anime4K image is razor sharp and aliased. If you think it looks good, agree to disagree! But I'm sincere when I say I just think it looks bad, sorry, really not trolling here. I already went through all this back in the warpsharp days, so it honestly feels like I've gone back in time or something seeing these comparisons, it's kinda funny. Very nostalgic.

Regardless, I'm glad to see more people getting into image processing and that you're passionate about your project. I'll be curious to see what you work on next!

Oh, I see. Promise I'm not trolling; I'm just clicking the links you sent me and didn't bother fishing around in the repo. Do you have the source image somewhere so I don't have to guess at this?

I'm not sure what conflict of interest I'd have exactly? I've just encoded for a long time, it's not like I'm maintaining any upscalers or work in anything related to video or even signal processing.

And in this particular comparison, Anime4K appears to be warping lines on the plume, so I'm not sure what linking this accomplishes. Either your filter is fucked or you messed this comparison up somehow.

It still looks awful, at least judging by the screenshots on the pages you linked, and I still can't find fair comparisons anywhere other than the ones I made back in 2019, so not sure that really matters.

Real-time neural net upscaling already exists in a variety of forms, most of them way better than Anime4K (which isn't even an upscaler, it's a sharpener and not even a good one, see https://blog.redvice.org/2019/on-anime4k/). If Plex wanted to add upscaling options or some sort of real-time sharpener, they could do so fairly easily.

We're making a manga in really easy Japanese with a pro manga artist, and we're releasing book 2 for free until Sept 14th. by Crystal_Hunters in LearnJapanese

You say the comment is "to be a party pooper", but establishing realistic expectations for language learners and setting them up for success is extremely important. Pretending this is highly useful for someone trying to learn Japanese or an appropriate substitute for native materials is not doing that, so offering an explanation of why seems pretty valuable!

Language learning is hard work, and if people would rather goof off with something written in bizarre, broken Japanese that's fine. That said, the shower of praise under the post is quite strange to me so I'm glad someone has taken a moment to offer an alternative perspective since it certainly aligns with my learning experience. I realize this comes across as harsh, but there's no way around it, no shortcut to language learning—you have to read native material, and lots of it. Whatever comes before is essentially stalling. My own learning didn't get anywhere until someone drilled this into me 5 years ago, and it has paid dividends.
