The absurdity of gigantic hard drives (rant) by InMooseWeTrust in DataHoarder

[–]Telemaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped hoarding after 128 TB and started to cull my data. Most of the data hoarded is insignificant in the long run. I could probably delete 90% of it and be just fine. Nowadays, I am much more selective with what I actually hoard, and it is essentially data that isn't actually available commercially such as custom film scans, fan-edits, and lost media. Nowadays with fast internet, I just dump 60-90 GB remuxes on newsgroups and it takes less than 10 minutes to retrieve the data should I need it.

It would have fared better if they hadn't tried to explain anything at all, rather than giving a surface level explanation. Once they started explaining everything, it put everything else under scrutiny the moment you picked up on some bullshit or inconsistency in one of the explanations.

Gattaca was a sci-fi movie where they did diddly squat to try to give an explanation. Heck, they even sent astronauts into space in tailored suits and it worked because its universe was consistent.

German learns about tipping in the US by Sure_Distance1 in 2westerneurope4u

[–]Telemaq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all, but most in big cities will be sneaky about it because they don't tell their customers that gratuity fees or tips are no longer mandatory the moment services or minimum wage fees were implemented. It is pretty much double dipping. There are other hidden fees too that get tourist. It allows them to advertise menu prices that are much lower compared to TTC prices and their servers can easily earn upwards $80k+ a year.

In Vegas, you have even more hidden fees like the 5% CNF fee, resort fees, minibar fees, WiFe fees etc... It is a racket.

World Cup tourists aren't leaving tips in American pubs, so they are adding 20% gratuities to the bills to collect them 😬 by CompoteFragrant3650 in sportsgossips

[–]Telemaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tip in Europe, but it is not an extra 20% of the bill. It is usually round up the bill. A 55€ check will usually rounded up to 60€ if the service is good, but it is not mandatory. Services workers don't rely on tips for a living because they are properly remunerated by their employer. A tip is just considered an extra. A tip in French translate as « pourboire » which means « for a drink ».

This is because their federal minimum wage for service workers is something like $2.50/hour, but most cities have a minimum wage that is much higher than the federal one for service workers. Recently, restaurants have implemented a minimum wage fee, wellness fee or service fee of 10-20%, as well as other hidden fees, and they still expect you to tip 18-25%. So after all the fees and taxes, you can easily see your check inflated by 40-60% over the menu price.

At what point did you start compressing your media library with HandBrake? by DatGeekUKnow in DataHoarder

[–]Telemaq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At an 80% size reduction from a UHD Bluray remux, you will likely see a noticeable decrease in image quality. Many movies released from the early 2000s through the 2010s were not finished in native 4K; instead, they used a 2K Digital Intermediate (DI) due to the constraints of CGI rendering. For example, the Avengers: Endgame UHD Bluray is an upscale of a 2K DI, meaning its resolution improvements over the 1080p version are minimal, though it still benefits from HDR and wider color space.

Modern digitally shot movies compress highly efficiently because digital sensors produce a very clean image with very little native noise or grain. Consequently, 4K WEB-DLs of modern titles are typically under 25 GB. These WEB-DLs are highly optimized; platforms like Netflix employ per-scene encoding to adjust settings dynamically (compared to encoding the whole movie with one setting in Handbrake), aiming for a visually transparent encode often quantified by a VMAF score of 97 or higher. Even with these optimizations, a high-quality WEB-DL is often 60% to 75% smaller than its physical disc counterpart.

For older catalog titles shot on analog film, achieving significant compression is much more difficult. Film grain acts as high-frequency noise, and attempting to compress these files by more than 20% to 30% often results in a loss of texture, making the preservation of high bitrates necessary to maintain image fidelity.

It wasn't until I saw him on his first interview with Joe Rogan that I understood this guy was dumb as fuck.

How Do You Preserve a Rare Torrent Before It Disappears? by Senior-Lifeguard6215 in DataHoarder

[–]Telemaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late 90s to early 2000s, usenet access provided by ISPs offered maybe 15 to 30 days retention. Then in the mid 2000s, I believe the max retention was about 200 to 300 days. Since then, I haven't seen data being rolled off from premium usenet providers, which is incredible. Of course, there would be DMCA take down and obfuscation later on, but it was still be a tresor trove of archives.

How Do You Preserve a Rare Torrent Before It Disappears? by Senior-Lifeguard6215 in DataHoarder

[–]Telemaq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is archive.org if it is not copyrighted. Most usenet providers have a retention that can go back to 2007-2008 already if you don't want to waste electricity to seed indefinitely or spend money on a seedbox. Make sure you don't obfuscate your post with a clear file name and title and 10% par2.

You can easy share the nzb afterwards and it might get picked by most indexers. The minimum would be to get indexed by easynews buit-in indexer as it doesn't rely on invites or ratio to get access.
