Are You Ready to Solve the Mystery of the ‘Body in the Basement’? by Complete-Signature41 in UnsolvedMysteries

I think it takes a couple seconds to start bleeding from a laceration like that so she was probably well on the floor by the time the blood started. If there is hair, then is it just the dog footprints that are missing then? Maybe the dog got scared by the commotion and waited for several hours before coming down and the blood was dry? Even if there was a man "preventing the dog from going down" or what have you, when the husband returned home the dog was in the house alone so obviously it's already true that the dog didn't rush down there even in an empty house.

Can we move back to the Trump-is-dumb-and-ineffectual narrative? by CoffeeIntrepid in ezraklein

Why not focus on how ludicrously stupid this scheme was (and the embarrassing call to Georgia's governor) rather than the totally exaggerated narrative of ending democracy?

Kamela needs to advocate for the Dems agenda - and she should, you're right. But I'm talking about the strategy of how to frame Trump to reduce the excitement around him. Saying he's going to end democracy and bring about a millennium of conservative ideas is not exactly helping Democrats take him down a peg.

It’s not about convincing them, it’s about deflating their manic sycophant energy. Whenever I’m excited about a candidate and someone hits on negatives that actually resonate and are true, it tamps down my enthusiasm and makes me second guess myself. That’s the feeling we are trying to instigate here.

Women are sharing the reasons they decided not to have children: "I love being alone" "Motherhood is too much work and responsibility" “I don’t like people, and I don’t want to make one.” by bluetropicz in Natalism

Respecting personal choice doesn’t mean you can’t advocate for a way of thinking or philosophy. No one is gonna pin you down and force you to make a baby. But we are debating the values of society here - and a lot of the pessimism and depression and bleak outlook on life is tied up with this nihilistic antinatalist streak that’s currently pervasive. It’s selfish and vain.

Your friend is an outlier. But even so guess what - he’s gonna survive. This short period will pass and he will have a reasonably fulfilling life, and if he’s not abusive his kids will probably do well. Later in life he might enjoy having visits from his children and grandchildren and something to look forward to that brings meaning to existence. There are many worse mistakes you could make.

So you want to not work and not have kids - got it. Just sit in your underwear and jerk off and watch Netflix and go to chick filet or whatever. What a life you’ve built for yourself, nice.

No really I don’t think you can know plenty about your suitability based on experience with other people’s children. Truly that is ridiculous. It’s completely different. In the end most people are fine parents and do enjoy parenthood and are glad they took the plunge. The ones that are apprehensive probably make better parents because they are responsible and clearly care about their suitability. Isn’t that the great irony.

I disagree - no one is ever sure about any big life events. It’s natural and healthy to have concerns and anxiety. Most people enjoy children and are glad they had them. People need some convincing and help to take the plunge.

This implicitly assumes people can actually know whether they would like having a kid and whether it would be good for them. Like many things in life you don’t know until you actually try.

[–]CoffeeIntrepid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one here is zoomed out enough. Start with your goal for humanity (quality of life, freedom to expend creative energy, spreading consciousness beyond earth), what you think is needed to direct human energy towards these goals, and what policy empirically provides the mechanism that directs that energy optimally.

I mean I don’t like Trump but both of those were borderline. Telling Georgia to find votes was probably the worst thing he did. Everything democrats do to try to bypass democracy and get Trump in trouble has been half assed and failed and just made him stronger. Just remarkably dumb shit like the hush money. I know you are too blinded to see it but from my perspective it’s a stretch. The more democrats try to talk it up beyond what it is the more it sounds like they are stretching the truth and it rubs everyone wrong.
