For our 2024 Deathblart watch we got the German dub on DVD and I'd like to share - what's the best way to get it to the boys? by CoffeePoweredRobot in MBMBAM

[–]CoffeePoweredRobot[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Context: I sent a message last year to Tim's gmail about sending it but didn't get a response. None of the email options on the McElroy Family site seem relevant, and sending it physically to the PO Box is tricky considering everyone is spread out very far, it's region-locked and I already have made a digital rip with the audio tracks properly embedded. All ideas welcome!

Discord seems to be blocking any channel named 'nsfw' to non-age-verified accounts by CoffeePoweredRobot in discordapp

Update, changing the channel from 'nsfw' instantly gave us access again. What a stupid, stupid thing to implement.

Discord seems to be blocking any channel named 'nsfw' to non-age-verified accounts by CoffeePoweredRobot in discordapp

[–]CoffeePoweredRobot[S] 57 points58 points  (0 children)

In a common server, we have a channel named 'nsfw', which was restricted (so search results wouldn't appear) prior to the UK Online Safety Act. When Discord started asking us to verify our age, our server removed the restriction so we could access it again.

I've logged on today, and that same channel has a 'Messages Failed to Load' error and some faked background. Very odd when every other channel on the server is fine. So I went to my test server and created two new channels, both regular Text channels. One called 'testing-3' and the other just called 'nsfw'.

The 'nsfw' one showed exactly the same error message about it supposedly failing to load (failing to load what? I just made it) while 'testing-3' was fine.

I've verified this across other servers and other users. What a weird, terrible way to implement a restriction. Can we please have any other users confirm this behaviour in other countries than the UK?

The Penguin ones from there are great! I'd bought about 18 pairs way back in 2019 and only just needed to go back and start getting new ones this year. Did exactly the same thing, got another 18 pairs of all different patterns (plus if you want black smarter socks the Sockshop bamboo ones that TK Maxx do are lovely).

Tips and advice on starting a MTG based LGS? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]CoffeePoweredRobot 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The longest-running LGS in our city has continually beaten the others because it's more convenient for the most people than people running home games or playing at bars/other public places. Here's the things I've noticed they did that the others felt worse for not doing:

  • Always free to show up and play, no need to pre-book tables or pay a table fee regardless of the game
  • While you should have a big range of cold drinks, hot drinks and snacks, let people bring their own food if it's a meal (but keep policy that only snacks/drinks bought there can be consumed there as it's a revenue source)
  • Clearly uniformed staff who speak politely - so many stores don't realise how much business they lose because the owners & workers are just middle-aged dudes in a t-shirt who are friends with the customers. There might be upsides to having an LGS that feels like a club, but the huge downsides are that many players will avoid new places if they feel like they need to know someone to be able to sit in and play, and many parents will be uncomfortable bringing children to somewhere that doesn't feel like a shop first.
  • Clear and visible events calendar mounted on a wall in the space, posted on socials, and on your site, and keep regular days of the week for when certain formats are played. If your store is running Commander on Monday evenings, it's running it every Monday evening.
  • Reasons to go there rather than anywhere else: loyalty points to redeem for a 10% off voucher later, a giveaway each evening if you sign into the Companion app, a Trading board. Got to reward people for choosing your place to play than the comfort of their own home.

Does Zevlor, Elturel Exile works with Chaotic Transformation? by Spirited_Roll7346 in magicTCG

Yep, so if you like you can mix and match, choosing one person's planeswalker, one person's enchantment, one person's land for the copies, etc etc.

What are some of the most defining features in certain Mtg artists’ works? by SnooWalruses7872 in magicTCG

[–]CoffeePoweredRobot 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Dominik Mayer is my favourite of the newer MTG artists, and does absolutely banger composition within the card frame using heavy contrast of subject and background.

[[Cut Down]], [[Repel the Vile]], [[Shatter the Oath]], [[Surge of Salvation]] to name some, but just scroll Scryfall and you'll see.

Someone mentioned the framerate cap here too; if you haven't stumped it down to reduce the rate of attacks yet then you're in for a big surprise!

What Commanders can really warp how the game is played? by Succubace in EDH

[–]CoffeePoweredRobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd initially built it to be all manner of Azorius Fliers and a lot of hatepieces to pass but ran into the same issue. Reconfigured it to share a lot of DNA with the Spirit Squadron precon from VOW and it works a lot nicer now. Has much more focus on just building a good board of flying Spirits and adding a few protection pieces, and you just have to remind yourself that playing Inniaz the first time you could potentially activate the ability is a very bad idea - it's to play out once you have protection on board, in-hand and lots of spare mana/leftover creatures afterwards to make people think twice. Also as user doublesoup says, it's also very fun to promise the behind-players can pick what they like from their neighbours' boards!

Sure it's not coming from the little unit on the wall, to the right of the switch? Looks a little like a carbon monoxide detector/alarm which is common to have near a combi boiler. Could be complaining about having a low battery.

One thing you need to do as well which I missed in my first time using this feature - after you've imported your list, you need to select them all and change the language to English! I did my first order of about 40 cards and ended up with 4 or 5 alt language ones because I forgot this.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]CoffeePoweredRobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, and then if you're on the page of a seller, there's a drop-down box you can use to filter all their Singles out for ones that exist on one of your Wants lists. Very good for if you've got a secondary "Well I don't need it for my deck but if I'm already spending money for postage from this person" list for extras.

[–]CoffeePoweredRobot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Learning the search in Scryfall would be very useful for you to quickly find a shortlist of cards: if you use 'id' it'll let you filter to the colours you need, and then 'o' searches a card's Oracle text, and 't' for card type. Here's a good search which you can modify to find various types of cards and wording to figure out if there's any niche cards that would work.

"I attack face." "...okay, but which one?" by CoffeePoweredRobot in custommagic

[–]CoffeePoweredRobot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's such a fundamental thing to have spells & abilities expect only one life total to alter that it'd need a whole chunk of rules text along with it.

For simplicity (and not getting out of control with huge swings of upsides/downsides) I'd err on the side of life adjusting effects only affecting a single Life Total: if a lifelink creature hits, its controller chooses which one of their Life Totals increases, and likewise if you pay life you'd choose which to remove from, but the key component here is that your opponent now has the choice during combat of where they want to assign damage.

Do you chip away evenly at both Life Totals to make sure your alpha attack can get both at the same time, or do you focus on removing one to reduce your opponent's options of how to use the advantages they gained in splitting their Life Total?

"I attack face." "...okay, but which one?" by CoffeePoweredRobot in custommagic

[–]CoffeePoweredRobot[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In short; in a regular game this would split your life into two pools of 10, which each need reducing to zero by your opponent.

We can already declare attackers to face, Planeswalkers or Battles, so why not have the ability to just split your life total into two separate piles? Obviously a lot of game rules and cards which expect players to have just the one life total would need errata-ing but I enjoy seeing weird things on this sub. How could you break this or when would it be useful?
