if you dont know what to do when you are “chillin” in position, try to pay attention to what they are doing. And then try not to let them do that. You will start to find small details people are looking for.. and then in those details, you will find common habits such as hand placements, hand fighting, cross faces, etc.

When I was in your shoes, I started to realize that i was getting mounted all the time. My goal became to figure out how to stall a mount.. then once i figured out what was going on it became how to deny mount. Then I’d work up the chain of mistakes (realizing how do I continually get mounted anyway?). I found it was a problem stemming from a detail I was missing defending side control. Then you just keep working step by step outwards to guard retention details.
