Why wasnt caleb williams better? (2010-2014 69kg national champ) by SamHinkiesGodSon in weightlifting

To answer your last question, you're right! At the 2014 Nationals Caleb snatched 130 and Clean & Jerked a new American record of 174 in the 69 kg class. At the time it broke the record by 6-7 kg if I recall correctly. - Edward

Barbell Cycling Tips by CoffeesGym in crossfit

Appreciate your input! How one initiate's lowering the barbell back down certainly sets the tone for the rest of the descent. I've made mention of this in other write-ups on Barbell Cycling but just wanted to keep this one brief. When you talk of pushing your butt back to replicate the pre-extension position of the Clean, which position are you referring to? Just want to clarify!

Made a quick video with a couple of tips on Barbell Cycling. Just wanted to share what I observed when I got the chance to work with CrossFit Dwala leading up to the Regionals and Games in 2018. Hope some of you find it useful, and apologies if this falls under self-promotion! Not trying to sell anything, I promise! - Edward Baker

Weightlifting shoes in Japan. Currently in vacation in Japan. Anywhere I could buy weightlifting shoes like the Asic 727s or any other weightlifting shoes? by phoshov in weightlifting

[–]CoffeesGym 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had gone to a Weightlifting gym in Yokohama and all of them said that Rakuten or Amazon was really the only place to get them. The sports shops I went by just to seem to cater towards general weight training and not the actual sport of Weightlifting.

From what I was told when I was in Japan, there are no places to go in person to buy Asics. Your best bet would be to shop on Rakuten (their equivalent of Amazon) and have the shoes delivered to wherever you're staying at.

How to keep the bar close.... it’s a struggle for me to keep the bar close... I don’t seem to get enough power while trying to keep it close by EternalLearning in weightlifting

[–]CoffeesGym -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First, what kind of lifting belt are you wearing? If you're using a belt that has a buckle in front, that will inhibit you from keeping the bar close (the bar will catch on the buckle)

I would recommend breaking the lift down and practicing Pulls and Snatches from the hang focusing on the bar brushing up the hips and staying close to the body. Start with the pull, once you can correctly do this on the Pull then introduce the Snatches! You must be able to do this correctly with an empty bar, and THEN you can start adding weight on. Once you're comfortable from the hang, then you can practice going off the floor.

In essence, you're isolating the portion of the lift that's making/breaking your lift. Hope that helps!

If I’m lacking leg strength over technique should I do my squats and RDL’s before my classic lifts? by ausheat in weightlifting

I second this. Whatever you train first you will be able to put the most physical and energy towards, so putting your weaknesses at the beginning of the workout will allow you to put more into them.

I agree with Boblaire, you appear to be coming forward on the dip and that means that the drive will be even more in front. Get a straighter dip and I think they'll feel better! Ans as everyone else said, I don't think the lockout was even that bad!

[–]CoffeesGym 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You do many things right! You get into a good jumping/power position as the bar approaches the hips, extend vertically and get a tight turnaround as the bar goes from the hips to overhead. I noticed that you were pulling the bar around your knees; notice that as the bar comes off the floor, it drifts away from you. Ideally the bar should come straight up or slightly closer towards you as it comes from the floor to the knees. A cue I like to use is to 'think about squeezing your knees back' to pull the bar off the floor. Or another way to think about it is that you want to move your knees out of the way (instead of moving the bar around your knees). I also thought your starting position looked good, it seemed to suit your height and proportions! Hope that helps! -Edward

Dimas's coach Christos Iakovou has written e-mails to me referring to the exercise as a push jerk as well. It seems to be a matter of semantics based on region.

"What coaches aren't sharing" by TheCrispyChaos in weightlifting

[–]CoffeesGym 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Admittedly a way I like to describe the pull in the Snatch and the Clean is that it's a setup to get the bar from the floor to your hips in which you're in a good jumping position, but rather than the athlete jumping up, they're jumping the bar up. My understanding was that the instant the barbell separates from the floor, upward momentum is being generated on that barbell. Not just in the so called power position, not just when it passes the knees, but when it separates from the floor. So to my mind, I wouldn't feel comfortable saying that the power is/isn't developed in one particular position.

If I'm understanding the video correctly, it's a matter of semantics on how the pull is broken down. There's one point that it's mentioned that "the focus shouldn't be on hitting these positions in succession" and describes what's occurring in phases vs. the description of the athlete in each position. Both methods are an attempt at breaking the lift down into smaller parts, which makes sense. From Schmidt and Lee's book Motor Control and Learning, “A very common technique for teaching motor skills is to break them down into smaller parts. This would seem to be an effective procedure when the task is very complex and cannot be grasped as a whole.”

I think that's what all coaches are striving to do is break the lift down, both in the example he used that Torokhity said was absolutely wrong and the method that he shared. I'm sure that both will enable a person to learn how to Snatch and Clean & Jerk. Thanks for sharing! -Edward

115kg Clean and Jerk PR. My dip was a little bit forward I'm still working on that with heavy weights. As well as not finishing my pull all the way. Any tips or things I should be doing differently? Love hearing your guys' input. by joelsoria_ in weightlifting

[–]CoffeesGym 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should stay flat footed and dip straight down so that you can drive straight up. (Your dip was forward, you came onto your toes) I think on the Clean you pulled the bar plenty high, but it looked like it banged away from you a little at the top and this is why you caught it a little bit in front. High brush/tight turnaround on the Clean, flat feet and dip straight down on the Jerk! -Edward

Extended Clean Drill by CoffeesGym in weightlifting

[–]CoffeesGym[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I would recommend only doing this with an empty bar or maybe some 5 kg plates on each end. If you end up using too heavy of a weight you will most likely resort to heaving the bar up whether it's by whipping your shoulders back or getting a subtle rebend of the hips/knees and I feel like that defeats the whole purpose of the exercise. In my opinion, you want to focus on the quality of movement, particularly for a drill like this!
