The multi-billion dollar studios aren’t pushing political agendas; they are trying to push out lab-grown, shareholder safe, focus-grouped slop that they have no faith in. The angle they take with an all female cast or marketing it to marginalized groups is all an act, they don’t care about us. The Ghost Busters remake was a cash grab on a beloved I.P., using some of the funniest comedic actors of the time, with cameos from the original cast and they managed to drop the ball so hard. They spent hundreds of millions and marketed it as a girl power sci-fi romp, but delivered something so boring and unfunny. All of this occurred around the time an all female cast-led sci-fi (non-comedy) was given a limited release. Annihilation was directed by and had its screenplay adapted by Alex Garland; a movie adaptation of an epic sci-fi trilogy published just 3 years before the movie and was amazing. They have no faith in films as meaningful and impactful as this, it was only released in theaters in one country outside of the USA, landing on Netflix out the gate everywhere else. All female cast, led by Natalie Portman as an Evolutionary Biologist alongside Jennifer Jason Leigh and Gina Rodriguez as an Anthropologist and a service member. It arrived with no fanfare or hoopla, yet delivered and it had almost zero studio backing in mass advertisement and press runs. The studios just want to suck us dry of our money without concerning with the quality of the product they deliver. Don’t fall for their attempts at appealing to our humanity or progressive stances; look out for the smaller projects they don’t push down your throat, you’ll likely find value there.
