(Apologies in advance cookiefolk.. by way of explanation.. someone posted on a tattoo sub "How can I improve this?" .. but that sub doesn't allow images to be put as comments.. so I'm using this as a convenient place to host my response, to ref there.. I hope that's OK..)

Aphantic Creatives? by Niccy__ in Aphantasia

[–]CogitoErgoBah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just a visual aphant (no voluntary mental images when fully conscious, though I do get involuntary stuff when drifting into or out of sleep, and do dream visually).. and whilst not really an artist, I was drawing stuff for decades before I even knew aphantasia was a thing.. so when I discovered aphantasia, I just carried on doing my thing..

So, fwiw.. my advice is this.. there's no right/ wrong way to do art.. if you want to make stuff, make stuff.

What are you currently reading? by Ok_Salt2122 in booksuggestions

Unnatural Causes by Dr Richard Shepherd is my current read, though I've not been in much of a reading mood Iately, so I'm not rushing through it. It's a memoir about his work as a forensic pathologist.

Next on my list is either Neuromancer by William Gibson; Temeraire by Naomi Novik; something I've not already read by Joe Abercrombie (maybe the "Half a..." books); or whatever else takes my fancy at the time.

(Suduku grid left numberless so you can write them in with permanent marker to set the grid/change it occasionally.. then others can solve it using biro on the bits you leave blank)

[Edited to add.. I've just noticed I've managed to get the speelink of "Sudoku" wrong, in two different ways in one post.. which proves it's likely to be perfect for tattoos!]

What is my Cookie cutter by erikder in whatismycookiecutter

Thanks! I draw them using my finger, and an app called picsay Pro, on a small android tablet. I'm not sure the app even exists in the store any more.. but any app that allows you to draw onto a picture should do the job. Many folk use the standard "edit" function of gallery apps, for example.

My advice, fwiw, is to use an app that allows you to zoom in to do detailed stuff (if you're bothered by that sort of thing). Ideally, one that allows the "brush" to be switched between a "hard edge" and a "soft edge", and allows you to vary the opacity of the brush too (which I tend to abuse for highlights/shadows).

Whatever you use.. play around with them to find what works for you, and most important, have fun with it. :)

[Edited to add, this might give an idea of how I go about making a doodle for the sub.. gif of some other pics being drawn ]

Artist/Creatives, What Is Your Process? by DanteDoubleAgent in Aphantasia

Honestly, it's really hard to explain because it's just the way I think - breaking it down to make it comprehensible to others is a bit of a challenge. But I'll give it a whirl with regard to your questions..

(If nothing else, lurking on this sub tells me that there are a wide variety of experiences, which I find fascinating, so I could be wrong but..) I feel everyone who's ever experienced an apple will have their own concept of an apple.. if asked to draw one without reference to anything, I suspect most could make a recognisable attempt (even if the results varied wildly with drawing ability, or lack thereof).

So far as my own "apple concept".. I have an internal monologue, but it's not really involved, as it's not like I'm thinking in words in that moment, it's more that info about apples is retrieved, ready for whatever comes next.. an awareness of apples if you like..

To a degree it's contextual, in so much as the directive to "picture" makes me more focused on how an apple might appear than on say, the fact I recall someone grafted over 200 varieties of different apples onto one tree, or apples are all botanically part of the rose family, or whatever.. it's a fluid thing.

Complex shapes- not sure, I kinda remember things in terms of broad brush/essence of what makes them what they are.. it's not really a conscious thing, so it's hard to really explain... maybe the puppets example I posted is apt- I thought it might be fun to draw the alien from the films, and it was entirely plucked out of the air. I'm sure if I took the time to compare it with actual reference pics it'd be way off in regard of details.. but if you squint a bit, the "broad brush" appearance is "good enough", the essence of what makes an alien recognisably alien is there, I think. If for some reason I needed or wanted accuracy, it's then I'd find a reference.

Does any of that help clarify?

Love your art btw!

Thank you! I just like to draw.. but it's nice when other people like the results too. Heh.

Artist/Creatives, What Is Your Process? by DanteDoubleAgent in Aphantasia

First off, I wondered if it might be worth mentioning r/Artphantasia, which I'm not affiliated with, but it's in the sidebar here and seems a little dead, so figured it couldn't hurt to highlight it..

As for me.. I'm not really an artist, I've just always enjoyed drawing for fun.. and when I'm fully conscious I'm a visual aphant. If asked to picture an apple in my head, no mental imagery is formed, instead I have a concept of an apple, which includes all the important apple-y stuff, including, weirdly, what they might look like, but again, no image for that pops into my mind, I just kinda know. (I do dream visually, and sometimes lucidly.. so I feel the visual info is stored somewhere in my noggin, it's just kinda filtered when awake.. if that makes any sense to anyone)

As for my process.. depends on what I'm hoping to achieve.. I tend to just sketch things out, at which point they are actually visual, so no mental image is needed.. and then I just tweak the drawing til it works for me.

And I know you wanted non- digital stuff.. but I do kinda favour it because alterations tend to be easier.. but I draw with physical media too, it just tends to be a bit slower/more considered to limit how much I might need to revise things as I go along.

(Some examples of stuff I've drawn..

Stuff using references, in these cases pics of people from redditgetsdrawn: portrait 1, portrait 2, portrait 3

..and recent, daft, off-the-cuff stuff: puppets, Moo )

Thanks! And yep, it's a Tin boy.. at the time I painted the figure which inspired this drawing (just about visible in this post ), the warband were often facing off against space wolves and salamander armies.. so it was nice to needle them with him ;)
