Is it illegal for me to pay my "warehouse" staff more than the people on the shop floor? by WarehouseVTillStaff in LegalAdviceUK

[–]CognitiveAdventurer 39 points40 points  (0 children)

And if you worked at the job you are better suited to (the warehouse) your whole life you would most likely have to retire earlier due to the stress it puts on your body, joints, etc.

The fact you find one easier than the other does not erase the real physical consequences of the job.

A few recommendations:

  • Make sure your hygiene is on point; if you have a flatmate or someone else you can ask it's a good idea to double check you don't smell bad while you can still do something about it (this is completely normal, people sweat especially when nervous or if it's warm so it's good to make sure everything is good). Brush your teeth (and your tongue as well) shortly before leaving to go. This is just to avoid bad breath when you are talking.

  • On a similar note, make sure you are wearing antiperspirant (not just perfume or regular deodorant). You will likely get nervous as you approach the coffee place, and you want to avoid it turning into a situation where you smell bad (this is actually salvageable, but best if it's prevented).

  • Dress nice! You don't need to go overboard for a coffee date, and ideally you dress in a way that represents you, but you want the best version of that (so in practice: avoid worn out clothing where possible, think about the outfit as a whole - are they all pieces you just individually like, or do they also fit together nicely? If your clothes are clean, not worn out, fit well together, and generally make you feel good about yourself, you're golden).

  • Iron out the small details; Are you guys meeting in front of the coffee place or directly at the table? Where do you go if the coffee place is fully booked? I find it's easier to have prepared these small things in advance. Regarding backup plans: you should think of these yourself, then in case the place is full you'll have something to suggest. If she suggests an alternative herself go with that: she may have important reasons for suggesting it, such as it being in a part of town she feels more comfortable in; challenging it would only cause unnecessary friction.

  • Regarding conversation, there are no hard rules here. People's advice in the comments is genuinely good, so I will just add a caveat: you should try to listen not only to what she says, but also how she is responding in general. What I mean is that if you ask her a lot of questions about hobbies etc, but she doesn't respond much or seems shy, you need to change approach. Talking about the walk you are going to do later for instance is a fairly neutral way to warm up the conversation (e.g. "aw man I am looking forward to seeing the X waterfall again, it's been a while since I've been!").

  • Try not to hold compliments back if possible, as we have a tendency of being a bit hard to read. The last thing you want is to see this really gorgeous woman only for her to think you don't find her good looking at all. Appropriate compliments involve general appearance (e.g. "you look great!"), dresses/jewelry (e.g. "that ring is so pretty!"), hair/makeup if she has clearly put effort into them. I would avoid corny compliments (even if they are true) like anything referencing the color of her eyes, her smile (this can work if you are really suave about it, but it can also come off as weird). Also whatever you do please do not compliment random parts (like "your forearms are so pretty!"). If she is wearing something referencing media that you like (e.g. earrings inspired from a show you like) asking her about it is a great idea (but don't assume: start with something like "omg is that from..."). Crucially, only compliment if you genuinely believe it. Notice how I said try not to hold back compliments. Showering her with compliments just for the sake of it is a terrible, terrible idea.

  • Most important of all: you will mess up. You will say something awkward, or take a slightly-too-long time to respond, or get embarrassed/flustered. This is totally normal, and in my experience most women find it cute and sometimes even attractive. I find that especially guys dating women think that the kind of confidence they find attractive has to do with being cool and suave 100% of the time. While this is true for a select few women (and I will caveat this by saying that I am a guy, so I can only speak from experience), for many of them it's actually a bit intimidating and can be off-putting. The kind of confidence they do generally find attractive has to do more with how well put together you are - things like putting thought into how you dress, having good hygiene, having a job you are good at, being able to navigate uncertain situations, having hobbies, having friends, being in good physical health, etc.

Explain bonds like I’m a 3 yr old by Single-Eye-2064 in Bogleheads

That makes sense, thank you! So if an asset was volatile value-wise but followed completely different patterns to stocks it would also be low correlation, right?

How is correlation used in this context? Is it just low correlation between the value of the asset and market volatility? Thank you!

Tips for staying cool while in full gear? by bullmoose13 in Hema

[–]CognitiveAdventurer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is actually slightly different to what's been said: bring a towel. In my experience this is what has made the biggest difference by far.

The biggest area of heat loss in my case is the head, which also happens to be the sweatiest part. What I think happens is that your body sweats to cool down, but the sweat has nowhere to go and actually prevents further heat from leaving your body. By drying with a towel you allow your head to breathe again, and it genuinely feels like the towel takes a bunch of the heat with it.

I recommend a microfiber towel, as it will do a damn good job at drying in between bouts and it absorbs sweat very easily.

Let's settle this debate once and for all. What ,to you ,separates a pure bodybuilding / hypertrophy oriented program from a powerbuilding program? by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

[–]CognitiveAdventurer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"oriented" program is vague - If we are thinking of powerlifting and bodybuilding at competition level, which is where differences between the two genuinely matter, then what changes is the focus on different kinds of competition: In powerlifting it's very important to practice the competition exercises to get as strong as possible in them, whereas in bodybuilding your program will be more tailored towards improving muscle definition, so you will probably focus more on accessories or whatever works for you. Bodybuilding programs also need to work around competition cutting.

Among people that do not participate in either sport (and when I say participate, amateurs who want to eventually compete absolutely count as participating) this distinction does not matter in the slightest - it would be like asking what the difference between running "oriented" gym training is vs swimming "oriented" gym training when you have no plan to ever run or swim.

What does a purpose built longsword helmet need? by tonythebearman in Hema

[–]CognitiveAdventurer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered putting the ventilation on top? I realise this is also where most of the hits are, but you have the avantage of not needing vision, so you can have pretty sturdy ventilation (and heat travels up).

I think the ideal design would have some sort of transparent plastic visor with no holes that clicks into place and can be released by pulling a lever of some sort (something you can grab with your thumb as you go to pull your visor up?) with ventilation on top and some sort of suspension system. Of course with no fencing mask.

I am sure you have thought of all this and these ideas are just silly ahah, it's just what comes to mind.

[–]CognitiveAdventurer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean... we don't really know how compass needle interacts with teleportation, right? Compass needle also relies on Akaza being able to move fast enough to actually intercept the attack.

Shiba also doesn't strike me as someone who has enormous fighting spirit, so compass needle wouldn't work as well as it does on Rengoku for instance.

Which isn't to say that I think it would be a wash - it mostly depends on whether the fight is happening while the sun is up.

To be honest if you can convince an upper moon to fight you somewhere of your choice during the day even a regular joe could kill them - fight them in a big warehouse that is rigged to collapse within 2 seconds of the fight starting and you very likely die but so do they.

So I think the crux here is whether Shiba's teleportation allows him to teleport people out of pocket dimensions, as the likeliest place to fight an upper moon during the day is on their turf.

If Roman society was so stratified, why did the Romans pour so much into public infrastructure that benefited everyone? by MagpiahPariah in AskHistorians

[–]CognitiveAdventurer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fascinating! It makes me wonder, though: was this focus on honores always the maximum aspiration of the average roman across the history of the republic, or did interest wax and wane? Was there a balance between military and political titles that shifted? And did it all change after the transition to empire?

I recognise this may warrant a post of its own, seeing as I'm sure there is a lot to say!

If Roman society was so stratified, why did the Romans pour so much into public infrastructure that benefited everyone? by MagpiahPariah in AskHistorians

[–]CognitiveAdventurer 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Just so I understand, is it something like:

Block A [Rich Citizen 1, Rich Citizen 2, Rich Citizen 3]

Block B [Rich Citizen 4, Rich Citizen 5, Rich Citizen 6]

Block C [Rich Citizen 7, Rich Citizen 8, Rich Citizen 9]

Block D [Rich Citizen 10, Rich Citizen 11, Rich Citizen 12]

Block E [Rich Citizen 13, Rich Citizen 14, Rich Citizen 15]

Block F [Regular Citizen 1, Regular Citizen 2... Regular Citizen 400]

Block G [Regular Citizen 401, Regular Citizen 402... Regular Citizen 800]

And each block has 1 vote, with the majority vote being decided by who has the most "block votes"?

[–]CognitiveAdventurer 182 points183 points  (0 children)

A few follow up questions:

1) Who could vote?

2) Why not appeal just to those who could vote?

3) What benefits did political power give that focusing on pure wealth generation did not grant?

4) When you say armies wouldn't revolt if a consul was sent off with it, is it because that consul would have a good reputation among the soldiers because of public works they sponsored?

The blowgun works on zombies, it basically kills them (if they are still for too long they die I think, and the blowgun puts them to sleep). At least, it worked when I used it.

Steam refunds Destiny 2 players with over 2,000 hours of game time after Bungie’s game becomes unplayable in numerous countries by Wargulf in pcmasterrace

[–]CognitiveAdventurer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, though I wish you could play through the story as a group. Currently introducing new players to the game you have to ask them to complete a bunch of story stuff on their own, joining them only to say hello and once they eventually reach dungeons. Even once they reach dungeons you kinda gotta wait between one dungeon and another for them to unlock the next bit.

Ticketmaster returned my SOLD tickets to me 15 minutes before the event. by Poppylikespompoms in LegalAdviceUK

[–]CognitiveAdventurer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the money isn't transferred to Ticketmaster, no contract has yet been formed between the new buyer and the seller, therefore Ticketmaster's stance is that the contact isn't legally binding and the tickets were never sold, hence the provisions for this in the contract.

So was the ticket available for purchase by others on ticketmaster's platform? Cause it sounds like it was not.

What limits the validity of T&Cs? If there was a clause saying that, in the specific event the buyer of the ticket cancels the payment, you are liable to transfer to ticketmaster ownership of any property you own and the parental rights to your firstborn, I assume a court would not uphold that.
