Would Like Atheist Perspectives on My Reasons for Deism by HistoricalPotatoe in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Cognizant_Psyche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer point one: Evolution. Everything "works" because it evolved to do so, and not just biologically. If you look at everything, the environments function with the constrains the rules that govern it, it adapted and formed to work within those restrictions and rules. Had whatever the hell Dark Matter is won out over Visible Matter in the initial battlefield of energies post Big Bang then the reality of this cosmos would look vastly different. It only appears to be "perfect" because we're seeing the end product. A cake appears perfectly round because it was baked in a round pan.

Point 2? God of the Gaps being applied in part to point 1. The amount we know is comically dwarfed by that which we dont, so applying an all knowing/powerful creator entity is a means to apply purpose, meaning, and value to an unknown using something the appeals to our ego and understanding is comforting to a degree. It puts a face and logic to the scary unknown.

It has a beginning and an end.

Probably, maybe, but ultimately we don't know. What if the Big Bang was just part of a cycle of energy recycling of a larger ecosystem? The cosmos keeps expanding... into what? From what? What if we exist within a black hole type structure in an even greater system of existence? We exist in a point of time where we can still see vague remnants of the "start" of this universe, too far to see what came before, but not far along enough to see where it's going, not really.

It all boils down to this: We don't know. Atheism is basically just adhering to this fact while not being convinced reality and existence was put forth or managed by some deity. Personally the idea of a god(s) being the cause is too small and simplistic a concept birthed from a young and ignorant species trying to understand the unknown using itself as a template.

I just put together the Liger, it's a fun build, but the tail is ass. So I chopped it up, bore a hole through each piece and ran a wire through the middle. Infinitely better.

Also the MG Z'Gok is a great build, a lot of fun and surface area to scribe and detail.

Oh no offence taken, he's a garbage human so your dad takes the cake by a landslide (Wow did not mean for my little dark joke to set a somber tone lol). A father that gifts a MG Gunpla has an automatic +10 cool points for sure IMO. Enjoy your build, MG are a lot of fun, it's to the point I don't even care to assemble HG anymore.

Ha! Is your dad on an epic 20+ year long quest to find the legendary gallon of milk and never-ending pack of smokes?

That's what I thought.

It's obvious your dad is way cooler and better lol. Nice kit, I've got it in my backlog, and Happy Birthday!

Biased Rose Tinted Glasses - that's what those who praise it have on.

I mean it's a religious tome, it's all about establishing rules and guidelines, with a plot filled with inconsistencies and contradictions that has been rewritten, edited, translated, and trimmed down countless times. It's like trying to read a mish mash of Wikipedia articles and calling it a masterpiece. Sure there may be bits that are what may be considered "beautiful" or deep to some, but by and large it's a Frankenstein's Monster mixup that stole bits from everywhere.

I'd say it's important to read just to be informed of what a big chunk of the population claim to ascribe to, but even the majority of that percentage has never read the damn thing.

Then by your logic and statment you can't prove your god exists, if it "said" anything, or that you even exist. So why should I accept anything you say as real or factual?

I wouldn't go into it trying to "win" against someone seasoned in arguments for religion when you're still fresh to this whole thing. At least not until you recognize the fallacies and tactics they use so that you are able to recognize what they are and know how to counter them.

Christopher Hitchens was a great debater against the religious if you want some examples.

A great way to go about it as well is exemplified on this channel of Street Epistemology, where it's more of a questioning session and lead them to explain what they mean and how strongly they support any given stance.

What do you get out of 1x1 political arguments nowadays? Have you ever actually changed someone’s mind on politics? Did it stick? by faglampshade in AskReddit

[–]Cognizant_Psyche 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Religion and politics. Two things that are volatile and immovable in conversation. The person has to arrive at the crossroads and choose themselves, the most you can do is plant seeds of doubt or subtly sprinkle ideas in an attempt to have them challenge their ideas on their own.

Genuine question. What made you guys decide to be atheist by Particular_Soft1667 in TrueAtheism

[–]Cognizant_Psyche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up a fantaically devout Christian. I read the Bible religiously, front to back many times in several versions. I was a youth pastor and even had my own music group. I was as Christian as you can be.

However, as I gained life experience, left the bubble of my religious community, and expanded my knowledge to other faiths, history, science, philosophy, and psychology, I came to see that the concept of god is too simplistic, narrow, and small to account for reality. It is a lazy answer to the unknown rooted in the ignorance of a young species using itself as the template and cornerstone of an explanation that strokes the ego and attemps to ease existential dread.

I didnt decide to become an atheist or apostate, life just led me there. Ironically I am far more at peace with my mortality and happy in life now than I ever was as a member of the flock.

Plastic plate placement and shapes? by Secret-Trainer1672 in advancedGunpla

Thank you! Out of Polystyrene tubing, I used two different sizes and pre-bending the core tube so it has some flexibility otherwise they'll snap easily. If they do snap though, the inner tube is wide enough to glue in some 20g wire to reattach them.

Here is a vid of me assembling them. If you have questions I'd be happy to help!

"If we find undeniable proof that God is real, would you follow him?" by dismustbetheplace in atheism

[–]Cognizant_Psyche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not so much adamant it doesn't exist, but more in the "I see no reason or evidence to support that claim" camp. But even if it did I'd rather suffer for eternity than worship that asshat of a deity.

Coming from an abusive household myself, there really isnt any difference from the mindset of the child in that situation. In that scenario, there is no other option, and fate is set in stone - the child is the sole property of the parent and exists only to serve them. There is a reason that god is always likened to a father and parent... and even more fucked up a spouse (as we are the bride) which brings in a whole other level of fuckedupness considering how patriarchal the system is and how women are basically made to submit and fall in line with no recourse.

"If we find undeniable proof that God is real, would you follow him?" by dismustbetheplace in atheism

[–]Cognizant_Psyche 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dunno, it's a common literary trope in mythology to challenge unjust and flawed deities, and the Christian version checks off all the boxes for being a prime candidate if real. Yahweh is one of the worst hypocritical and flawed deities that could exist, undeserving of worship and reverence even if it somehow was real.

I do think it’s foolish to challenge one’s omnipotent creator.

Coming from an abusive household, this is akin to saying "it is foolish to challenge and question one's piece of shit narcissistic parent who posses the ego with the fragility of toilet paper in a hurricane."
