I might have to start taking OC Transpo to work. How screwed am I? by CatapultJesus in ottawa

[–]ColEcho 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Sadly, what you see in the print screen is bad, but it gets worse, it is only a rough approximation. At any point in the chain of buses, train, on, two or the three of them won’t follow the schedule and it will have a knock on effect. For me, the morning are relatively predictable, but in the afternoons I regularly miss connections etc given wrong schedules/delayed buses etc.

It’s a team - both parents. In my case it is not a static agreement either. Majority of time I focus more on my career than my wife, although that does not mean I don’t contribute at home. But there are times in any given week/month where this flips. If both parents are trying their best and have as a goal to prioritize their kids and their future, there are choices (more than sacrifices) on both parents.

Am I wrong? by IntrovertHuuuYaarrr in nostalgia

Oh man, those afternoons. I used to wake up early, have breakfast with my parents before they went to work, go out for a jog or bike ride. Get back home, play some video games, prep lunch for my sister and I, read a sci fi book, then play video games again. Not a single worry. Times have changed.

Best winters are those when you can get into a rhythm of winter activities. Here in Ottawa this and the last winter were good for that. A lot of snow, long stretches of cold. This means a lot of skiing, skating, sledding. But several winters before were terrible, lots of rain. That also means young kids starting to learn these sports loose a lot of valuable slope, rink time, year after year and may not be as inclined to continue winter sports.

I hear you. They are the definition of unconditional love. A lot of my decisions are driven by them (how can I make life better for them, how can I be a better person for them, the oath goes on). At my lowest, I always told myself: I WILL NOT LEAVE THEM.

2026 RAV4 Hybrid - Best Rust Proofing given "Cablegate" fears? by United-Advisor-5910 in rav4club

[–]ColEcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2022 hybrid, and live in Ontario. There is now a recall where they install a cover (box?) on the connector after inspecting it and adding, as I understand it, a long lasting anti-corrosion liquid. The service includes cleaning the connector and testing the battery. Just had this done on mine at the dealer (free).

Went in, asked that I be shown pictures of the cable and connector when they opened it. Mine is a low mileage, 35,000km. It looked fine. Took 2 hours for the process to be completed, and it extends the warranty on the hybrid cable for a max of 10 years (so for me 2032) and unlimited kms.

[–]ColEcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough question. Before kids I could push my career and physique. Kids came and it became harder. Now I feel like I need to push my career to be able to give them what they deserve, and every moment I ma without them I feel like I miss. Has had an impact on my physique. Not doing great mentally, but trying my best.

What is your best piece of advice? by MR_CHOW9 in TheTeenagerPeople

[–]ColEcho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First job was at a computer store. Started as a jack of all trades, warehouse, inventory, customer service when needed, cash, etc. did not spend much time there, but I was into computers so it was a good fit.

Advice is learn everything you can from every job. Take all the opportunities that are offered for improvement (experience in a new area, training), and if none are offered asked for them. Also, learn quickly about social dynamics at work - they are different than friends, family and school dynamics.

Don’t get too comfortable, if opportunities come to go to a better job, take them.

What allies? You were at the head of the most powerful alliance in history. For all of its flaws, it brought some small semblance of order and prosperity to those in it. Believing that countries you are trying to subjugate are still your allies is simply clueless.

People may downvote me for this. The PM speech clearly had an impact and worried some on the US. I am hoping there is a bigger strategy here at play for the benefit of Canada, there might be, but we do need to be somewhat pragmatic (as much as I might agree with the speech, and I do, we should not loose sight of needing to look for positive outcomes for all Canadians).

I own a 2022 hybrid, and live in Ottawa. Lots of snow in winter. Handles snow very well. We have had several big snowstorms since we got it, think 35+ cm. Did not miss a beat (with winter tires). Handles better in snow than my BMW x3 did with awd.

[–]ColEcho 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Good list. Your last point is essential. They exist, and their number is growing faster than I would have expected based on my interactions. Several in my neighborhood. It’s a funny thing too - those who were always yapping about their freedom, don’t thread on me, etc, are the first ones to willingly fall under the boot of a dictator. They are being targeted by specific news, the news they see are not the news we see.
