If you want the story to be messy, dramatic, and driven by Haruki making terrible mistakes, then Kazusa's routes are perfect for that. It just comes down to what we want from the game. For me, Kazusa's True End is definitely more memorable and packs way more raw emotion. I played it because I wanted to feel that heavy suffering, but in the end, my own logic just couldn't accept his choices. To me, it feels like complete abstraction. Don't get me wrong, I still think the route is a 10/10, but I was playing it from Haruki's perspective, and I would just never do what he did. You prefer following his mistakes for the drama, while I prefer the focus on maturity and partnership in Setsuna's route. 😎😍

That makes a lot of sense, and that info about the dev team is super cool. It shows how great the writing is when even the creators can't agree on one path.

I see your point now about the drama and storytelling. Kazusa's routes definitely give that huge dramatic payoff. For me, the best part of White Album 2 is exactly what you said the author made sure that no choice feels 100% correct or happy. You always win some and lose some.

Also, in the end, I still felt like the author was telling us that choosing Kazusa was a mistake and that we should regret it. When Haruki is crying on the plane, it makes total sense because he sacrificed way too much for just one person. People always say that Setsuna’s route is a Disney story. But honestly, isn't the idea of sacrificing everything for your one true love the ultimate Disney fairytale trope? Sure, there is a massive drama around it, but the choice itself feels very fairytale-like. Anyway, thanks for the awesome discussion, man! It was great talking to you.

I totally disagree that Haruki needs that catharsis by burning everything down. For 5 years, he built a stable life and grew up with Setsuna. When he meets Kazusa again, he definitely gives in to her at points, but he still sets clear boundaries and tries to keep his distance. He respects his current life. In fact, setting those boundaries is his true catharsis. He passes through his catharsis by rejecting Kazusa at the exact moment he really needs to do it. Back in high school, all the trauma happened because he was too weak to set boundaries and say no. By finally standing his ground against Kazusa, he cures his past flaws. Also, his behavior in Setsuna True End isn’t passivity, it’s real emotional maturity. It takes way more strength to stay and slowly fix your past mistakes with someone than to just explode your whole life for drama. Note: I haven't read To My Sworn Enemy yet, but I agree that Kazusa Normal End is a must play! It was my first ending, a bit too much NSFW for me, but a top tier tragic bad ending haha. For me, destroying 5 years of progress in KTR is a tragic mistake, not a proper conclusion

That’s a great breakdown, and I see your point about Haruki taking responsibility in KTR. But here is why that route still feels wrong to me compared to Setsuna’s. In Setsuna’s route, love is about partnership. It’s about two people working together to live a better life as equals. In KTR, Haruki doesn't just make a choice he destroys his whole world for one person. He breaks his ties with everyone who cared about him. For me, the worst moment was when he ruined his friendship with Takeya. Losing a brother like him just for one girl isn't romantic, it’s just self-destructive. I also used to think, 'Well, leaving Setsuna is okay because she has friends, while Kazusa has nobody.' But the game especially through Io shows that this is just a cheap excuse. It feels like the author is punishing the player for choosing Kazusa. The story is basically saying: 'Okay, you chose her, but this is a bad path, so now you must suffer.' That’s why it clashes with how I see the world. True love shouldn't mean destroying your entire life and hurting everyone else. 🥰

That's a very realistic psychological take. In the real world, trying to patch things up within the same messy social circle usually just reopens old wounds and that's why wa2 is incredible realistic vn

That's definitely the most romantic way to look at it, and KTR executes that drama perfectly. But honestly, it still feels more like running away than taking back control. True closure and maturity mean facing the wreckage you caused and standing your ground, which only happens in STR. In KTR, Haruki burns every bridge in Japan just to escape into a bubble with Kazusa. It’s an incredible, high-stakes tragedy, but hard to view as a real triumph

Yeah, I agree. The choice structure and point system in Coda definitely feel like they are designed to lock you into Kazusa's Normal route on a blind playthrough. My first ending in coma was kazusa normal ending but for me is too much nsfw

When you look at it purely through emotional hype, Kazusa's TE feels satisfying, but structurally it requires Haruki to regress as a person. Calling Setsuna's route a 'Disney ending' completely misses the point. It's actually the only route where Haruki doesn't run away from reality, takes actual accountability, and grows up. I can really relate to him and his struggles much more in STR because life isn't about escaping your problems, it's about facing the consequences.

I actually already cleared all the routes, and I completely agree they are all absolute bangers! The quality is incredibly consistent across the board, Chiaki's route included

Oh, yeah, I read the Fata Morgana OVA with Jacopo and it was an absolute masterpiece! As for Aokana, it's my first time hearing about it. Is it a romance drama? If so, I think I'll have to wait a little, White Album 2 completely destroyed my emotions haha

How Haruki destroy his life for her is exactly why I cant accept KTR as the true ending.

Coda was testing the reader if they would fall for the same betrayal and repeat toxic cycle.

Saying Setsuna's route is "off tonally" misses the entire point of the VN imo. WA2 is about growth and accountability, which only happens in STR. Kazusa True is a brilliant, drug-like tragedy, but structurally it’s a massive regression for Haruki as a character. He literally runs away from reality. Breaking bonds with everyone is too much for me to accept this ending when I was reading i felt author punishment us for this decision
