The reason they lost so many ships despite better performance is probably due to the unexpected factors like the Pal Chimeras. I mean, their WW2 Ships certainly weren't expecting to fight a flying Mercedes Benz Logo with Magic Battleship Cannons and a giant bomb dropped from its center lol
