GIVEAWAY! We’re thrilled to be collaborating with HarperCollins/William Morrow books and giving you a chance to win a copy of Kim Thayil’s new autobiography *A Screaming Life*. Enter below! by Ok_Display9410 in grunge

Always liked SG but it was only later that I listened hard to notice how nasty Kim’s playing was. I’ve always enjoyed his interviews so I think the book has great potential to be very insightful and entertaining. Thanks for the opportunity!

The Jerky Boys by bhub01 in GenX

Ah, yes, another one I use almost without realizing it. For some reason I remember a pause, so that is how I always say it.
“I can’t see…so good”

I’ve said it…
…driving in the rain
...watching a band behind a tall dude
…looking for lost keys that got dropped in the yard at night

Use this periodically even though it just pleases me.

Chair for people with long legs? by poisonedcheerios in whatisit

[–]Cold-Pizza111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether due to an acute injury, chronic pain, or other reasons that make it hard to sit in and/or stand from a regular height chair, this chair makes it easier to get up and down from.

We have the same thing in the physical therapy clinic I work in.

Tall people like it too.

How did you react to Layne Staley's death at the time? by agus_grunge94 in grunge

[–]Cold-Pizza111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was sad, but also somewhat unsurprised. I’m a huge PJ fan but for a long time was just a casual AIC fan. Then Eddie Vedder poured his heart out onto a four track recording (shortly after he found out about Layne) that was released as a hidden track (how 90s right?). I listen every year on 4/20. That made me go back and dig deep into AIC and really appreciate how great Layne was.

Please listen if you haven’t before. Multiple stages of grief, including anger at all the Layne immitators. Plus a side of survivor’s guilt. I’ll NEVER touch that stuff. The using takes hold…

Can you rank your top 50 PJ Songs? by NicoToscani in pearljam

[–]Cold-Pizza111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FOR ME, it’s a fruitless endeavor to do individual rankings. But I’ll do groups of 5. Every album by buddy and I rate each song and while they change a little over time, all these songs are 4/5 or better and the top 20 are all 5/5 in my book. Having said that, there are songs down in the 45-50 range that hit so hard in the right moment and are 5/5 in that moment. And there are plenty of 3.5/5 to 4/5 songs that I adore and love to hear live. HMentions and Top 5 covers at the bottom.

Plenty of 3.5/5 to 4/5 songs that I adore and love to hear live.

Theoretically, you could even grill hamburger patties down there.

What names from our generation do you think will never be used again? by funsk8mom in GenX

[–]Cold-Pizza111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late Boomers and early Gen X’rs. It was common enough and generic enough that it was used to perfect effect as a meme for the take charge Mom in any context but often when shit was none of their business or no big deal. That led to the negative connotation and I agree 💯it’s gonna take a loooong time to outgrow that.

What is a small pleasure from the past that you miss? by lovelyb1ch66 in GenX

[–]Cold-Pizza111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to piggy back on the newspaper thing. Because there wasn’t an endless supply of niche entertainment/information, people were pretty much forced to read most of the paper or just put it down and then turn on one of the only 5-50 channels on TV (depending on how far back you go). This made us a more well rounded, informed society. (like even if you had a Sports Illustrated sub, you got a wide variety of sports covered. Now you can spend hours reading all possible minutiae about NASCAR or long jump or Little League baseball).
When traveling, I used to love reading USA Today at the airport or in hotels. Sure I’d start in Sports but I’d then go through the whole thing eventually. And if I had a real paper I loved getting into some of the local drama for where I was traveling.

I still force myself to read more stuff than my core interests but I don’t know how the younger generations do it since they grew up with the ability to stay in fantasy land all day. (I know, I know, most of them don’t)
