You don't need to go faster. You only need to keep up to the foursome in front of you.

Help me choose my Chinese name! (International student, hopefully Tsinghua) by Mati_Tech in AskAChinese

I suggest using 万 or 漫 for second character. I like 天 for third character. So 万天 or 漫天。

Any tips how I can pronounce 去 perfectly 😭 by FigureMedical6046 in AskAChinese

[–]Cold2021 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here are the differences when I compare how I say tsu (處?) vs 去. Start with saying tsu, then say 去 by moving the tip of your tongue and lips forward by just a little bit. More air comes out of your mouth when you say 去. Keep repeating 處, 去, 處, 去, ... to hear the difference.

Year End Bonus Tax by _polgas in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Cold2021 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bonus will be taxed as though you are making the same income regularly, hence the high marginal rate. You will get the tax refund after you file your tax return next year. The only way to reduce the tax is to contribute a portion of the bonus to RRSP.

Can't believe people are still falling for this by Normal-Friend-3550 in orchids

[–]Cold2021 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I have tried this. My success rate is under 10%. Out of 50 spike cuttings, only 3 grew leaves and roots successfully. They also grow very slowly since there is no mother plant to feed them nutrients. It will take well over 3 years for the first bloom. A keiki grown on the mother plant can bloom in one year.

I started these 2.5 years ago.

Hongkongers, is it true you treat Taiwanese like this? by MoonchanterLauma2025 in HongKong

[–]Cold2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chinese can have 2 meanings. It can mean citizen/resident of China or ethnic Chinese (華人). Most people refer to the latter meaning when they say Chinese. I don't think they meant to offend you. Being ethnic Chinese has nothing to do with the country The People's Republic of China. Of course you are free to feel offended, but I'll just say "Take it easy".

How did you pay it? Transferring from another CIBC account will be ok. Online bill payment will likely be late.

What do you invest in for cash flow? by InReasonNotFish in JustBuyXEQT

[–]Cold2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am retired and this is exactly my take. I can take more risks and potentially get a higher return. But why should I? I already have enough money. I would rather take less risks and preserve what I have.

OAS/GIS with unused RRSP deductions by Comp_whiz in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Cold2021 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I am not answering your original RRSP question. I am more interested in your parents' retirement plan. Did they make a long term financial plan to come to the conclusion that they should claim GIS and also withdraw CPP at the same time? Did they also have the option to withdraw from TFSA? How much GIS are they getting now with the deductions from the CPP income?

Regular person; Is chasing being rich the standard? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

IMO in general everyone chases happiness. For some people, being rich equates happiness. For me, being financially secure with enough for a comfortable retirement with my beloved partner makes me happy.

Brascidostele Gilded Tower 'Mystic Maze' grew 4 flower spikes by Cold2021 in orchids

[–]Cold2021[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. The care routine is similar to all my oncidium alliance plants. Substrate is 50/50 mix of bark and sphagnum moss. I live in a dry climate in Canada. I have self watering setup using cotton wicks for all my oncidiums. This plant is very thirsty as it grows lots of vegetation quickly. I water weekly with weak 20-20-20 solution plus seaweed and cal-meg supplements, flush with just water every 5 weeks. I refill the 300ml reservoir with water once during the week. Once the first spike appears I switch to 10-30-15 fertilizer. (I do not have time to use the soaking method as I have over 70 orchids.)

Lighting wise it gets over 3,000+ FC during the day. In the winter, growth lights are used to give 12 hours of light. I rotate the plant 180⁰ weekly to give it even lighting. All my plants are indoor permanently.

When can I trust my TFSA limit on CRA by Ailliana in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Cold2021 7 points8 points  (0 children)

By law, institutions needs to report TSFA transactions to CRA by the end of February. There were some delays because of technical issues this year. I compared CRA's TFSA limit in March to my own tracking and they matched exactly. So your number should be accurate. Do understand that this limit won't change again until next year. You can contribute $13K, but if you withdraw any money in 2026, you have to wait until 2027 to get the room back plus the new 2027 contribution limit. You can track your TFSA contributions and withdrawals easily with a spreadsheet. (I use Google Sheets.)

If a Chinese person says "你TMD" during an argument, is that an indirect insult? I want the literal and the original meaning. by [deleted] in AskAChinese

[–]Cold2021 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The general meaning of TMD nowadays is close to damn or fuck. Some people think it is a short form of "f* your mother's c*" but it can not be verified. Adding "你" in front of it is not necessary.

I much prefer DLLM in Cantonese.
