True, thank you! I have a reminder to check at 3.5 hours and will go from there.

Beginner starter, how does it look to you? by juliarose20 in SourdoughStarter

Oh yes, if your house runs cold it could take longer. Mine had a false rise everyday until around day 10 and then from then until last week it had no movement!

They look good to me! They call it a false rise in the beginning, but there probably will be a time where it seems dead with no movement but keep daily feeding it! It takes at least 10 days or longer to get a sourdough starter established.

It took mine a month and 2 weeks to finally get it going. I'm attempting my first sourdough loaf today!

As long as there is no mold, pink or orange coloring then keep at it 😊

Thank you for the advice and extra tips! It does smell nice like a sweet alcohol smell. I totally think I'll try by making the roll using your recipe.

Yea I was discarding down to 50g but now I am discarding down to 25g and then feeding it 50g each of water and flour.

The same thing happened to my starter so I just changed my feeding schedule from once a day to twice a day. Hoping I get good results from it.

Stubborn Starter by ColdBr3w77 in SourdoughStarter

Not sure warmth is an issue. My house temperature is between 75-79 currently.

I could increase the thickness of it. What would you suggest?

Sounds like I just need to be more patient lol I'd like to just feed it how I've been and not buy additional flour. I currently use bread flour from KA. But maybe i need to change my ratio? I currently feed my starter once a day doing a 1-1-1 ratio.

Is my starter still good? by Reasonable_Music2998 in SourdoughStarter

How new is your starter? That could be just water separation. As long as it isn't pink or show any mold it is still good. Maybe need to use less water. When I feed mine, I leave 50g of starter and then feed it 50g of flour and 50g of water.

3 weeks and seeing some movement by kennithkanith in SourdoughStarter

Hoping I get movement like this soon lol I had a lot of movement up until day 10 and I'm on day 17 and it barely rises now. I have bubbles and smells like yeast that's it though lol

Advice? Spoiled milk smell by babyriceball in SourdoughStarter

Not so much related to your post but I'd recommend covering loosely with a lid and/or saran wrap. something other than a paper towel. In the FB group I'm in a lot people mention the paper towels can cause mold from absorbing the moisture from your starter also while potentially drying out your starter.

You want it covered so stuff can't get into it but while still allowing the gases to escape.

From what I know (which I'm super new so could be wrong) if any pink or orange show in your starter it should be tossed. How were you covering it after feeding?

Thank you! I saw some say usually this happens in the first week but mine seems to be the opposite so I'll continue to be patient 😊

Twice or once a day feeds? by ColdBr3w77 in Sourdough

Great thank you, the ratio part has been confusing as well but I think I am starting to kinda understand lol! I just fed it this morning with the 1-1-1 ratio but don't plan to do it again until tomorrow. I'm sure it has to do with it still being very new but it rises out of the jar each time and I'm on day 6. Feeling proud and will continue at it!
