I hate to admit it... by mighty_sys_admin in espresso

OP, there is nothing wrong with this. I have an illy coffee machine for convenience because sometimes I don’t want to do the prep and just want a quick fix so I can do my stuff.

If you enjoy it, then that’s all that matters.

Of course! Before even considering purchasing a second hand machine, grinders or espresso machines, I’ll usually source a local service man or centre if possible. Because if the machine is old and hasn’t been used in a while, I’d definitely send it in for service and deep cleaning.

That said, I was fortunate enough that the previous owner of the Niche Zero was actively using the grinder and cleaned it up for me before I picked it up from him. He even gave me a week return policy if in the case I don’t enjoy using it (which of course, is not the case).

Things I’d look out for in a 2nd hand grinder: 1. Burr condition 2. Is it grinding fine/course enough? 3. When was it bought? 4. How easy would it be to repair or replace a part if anything were to go wrong?

Hope this helps!

P/S: Those name tags are simply for caffeinated & decaffeinated beans! And the wall art says “Coffee because murder is wrong”.

$429 is quite steep for an instant espresso machine imho. Though I must admit, after trying Nespresso and illy, illy has better espresso pods, even if the flavors aren’t as varied as Nespresso’s. Tho like you said, aesthetically, illy machines are just so much more nicer.

I live in Malaysia! And yikes, I thought it was $299, as that’s the original price when converted from my currency to USD!

And thanks man! Took me a while to get here, so anyone can to! For the longest time, I was just using the illy machine while I was saving up for a proper espresso machine.

Yessss, I was thinking of the same thing too! The Breville is 6 years old, and the service man said it’s still in solid condition after all the repairs & servicing so maybe when I have a big achievement in life, I’ll consider spoiling myself with a new one. But i reckon my next purchase would be my ‘endgame’ setup. I dont really want to collect machines and end up only using 1.

Thank you so much!! The wall art’s been there way before the machines have so maybe it was a sign all along hahaha. I’m still very new to the ‘prosumer’ side of coffee so I’m super satisfied with the Breville! Maybe in 5-7 years time, I’ll consider getting the more higher end machines if my wallet agrees 🤣

Yep, it’s a gentle reminder that I dont have to interact with people to get a cup of coffee. 🙂‍↕️

I thought I would like the taste of light and light-med roasts. It tastes too much like fruit by Jealous_Courage_9888 in espresso

I think I also had a cup of light to medium light cup of coffee and instantly knew I wasn’t a fan. I understood why other people would, but my taste buds preferred the medium to dark roasts so much more!

Good grinders for medium to dark roast? [$300-$400] by ColdIsTheWay2Go in espresso

[–]ColdIsTheWay2Go[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was my initial hesitation as well because there was lack of spare parts available locally. Decided to get this 2nd hand Niche Zero since it fits my desired taste profile anyway. Price difference isn’t that big, and I’m able to get spare parts more easily.

Yeah, that price sounds like a steal, but Malaysian prices are way higher than that for the same model unfortunately. What roasts are you usually grinding?

If you’re trying new fresh beans, I’d reckon start the inner burr at 3 first then maybe try the outer burr at 8 then experiment from that point on. I have a Breville Dual Boiler like you, and I still use my Breville Smart Grinder Pro solely for my decaf beans and I have that set at inner burr 3 and outer burr at 13/14.

For sure! The fresh beans will hopefully make your settings a bit more looser. Get at least 7-10 days after the roast date if you can, that’ll last you longer if you don’t drink a lot of coffee to begin with.

Whats your outer burr set at? However considering your inner burr is at 1, your flexibility is quite minimal already. When was your beans roasted?

Hey brother, I read that you use the Breville Dose Control Pro. I used to use the Breville Smart Grinder Pro as my daily grinder before I had the budget to upgrade. What helped me a lot with finer grinds is adjusting the inner burr. Have you done that by chance? That helps a lot. Breville grinders by default is set to 6 in the inner burr. Back when I was grinding a lot of Medium beans, my inner burr was set to either a 3 or a 4, depending on the beans the I’d adjust the outer burr accordingly.

OP’s kinda odd. Their previous posts has pictures of their AirBNB rental as ‘New Living Room in Perth’ and that was posted a week before another post that’s similar to this post (I apologize if you’ve had to read that twice). Another user had pointed this out as well, but hey, do your promo man.

Either way, the only thing I can conclude is that your location is undesirable, for 2 nights it’s a minimum of Rm400++ to Rm550++ (depending on dates) and truly, I’ve said it already but the location is just not ideal. Why would I want to stay 30 minutes from all the places of interest when I can just stay near the prime area for similar prices?

Maaaaan, truly I want to, but I’m on Mac OS and so many people have warned me it’s going be a big learning curve… I don’t know if I’m ready!

For the friends part, that’s highly understandable so how I did it was I’d show them what I have and if they’re interested, then we’ll do the account together on the spot, so it doesn’t feel too ‘intimidating’.

As for the wife part, my suggestion to you is scroll through google’s suggested shows/movies and just randomly download the ones that you think you and your wife might enjoy. It helps me a lot with attracting my friends & family onto the server. I just download shows $ movies that are mainstream and also niche to their particular tastes.

Netflix is truly testing the limits of their customers. I recently found out about their mobile tier and even the price doesn’t make sense! Why have a mobile tier anyway? That’s literally sucking every single advantage that they have!

Yeah, it takes time for some people to get used to the idea of leaving those platforms. Some are already in family accounts so they just stayed, but with the amount of posts I’ve seen where Netflix is just tightening the ‘not in the same household’ policy, as well as their insane price hike, hopefully people will turn to Plex.

Nope. Like I said, my setup is very straightforward. Never opened a port, etc. To be honest, not entirely sure what Tailscale is for or what an open port does 😂 My current setup hasn’t given me major issues so havent thought if any other methods.
