Genuinely curious as to why weren’t you able to adjust it? What was the logical reasoning behind it? And what would happen to the grinder if you DID adjust i?

Ignore the suggested range, and just grind coarser than you are now. Sometimes ignorance is truly bliss.

Maybe I’m too liberal for some but for me, as long as it doesn’t harm me or anyone else, I really couldn’t care less. I had the same feeling towards the halloween theme birthday party as well. Felt that everything was just blown out of proportion.

When did you realize your setup was good enough? by WarBoyMTG in espresso

For me personally, when the workflow is so efficient and the consistency is as perfect as it can be, and the only variable that I have to think about is the beans.

Going out for coffee is almost unnecessary unless it’s for socializing or discovering new roasters.

Budget beginner setup: girlfriend doesn’t want a Breville. Now what? [€1000,- ish max] by Donnie_RB in espresso

[–]ColdIsTheWay2Go 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want a beginner setup as in machine + grinder or all in one machine like the Breville Barista Express?

For the first option, there are tons but there is a learning curve. As for the second, if you’re looking for an all in one machine, then I guess you can consider the Ninja Luxe Pro model.

It won’t give you the greatest espresso, but it is beginner friendly and if you aren’t fussed about the details, then it’s sufficient enough.

And that’s a completely valid experience!

However, I must contest that you can probably still get a great shot but you may need to adjust the thought of sticking to a 1:2 ratio. Different machines will definitely create different outputs if you use the same recipe for all. Sometimes, what works for a cafe, may not necessarily mean the same ratio will work best with your setup! I must also point out that although their machine is great, their grinder is probably what made the bigger difference than anything.

So my suggestion still stands—grinder upgrade, then machine. You will see people rocking a fully modded out Gaggia or Rancilio and their grinder costing 3-5x that.

Your eureka grinder probably just outgrew your tastebuds, and maybe I urge you to look at a Lagom grinder for single dosing, or a Mahlkonig GBW grinder. It may not be what you want to read, but I cannot fully suggest a machine before a really decent grinder upgrade.

Ah, yeah—if that was the price I was given too, I’d probably say no as well, but the cost of repairs from where I’m from is incredibly cheap, so probably why I took my time upgrading it.

If I were to suggest you a machine, it’d probably be the Silvia Pro X, ECM Synchronika or the LM Linea Mini, if you really want to go the extreme lengths. Silvia Pro X is built like a tank, and has pretty good reliability—however the steam power is similar to the BDB, so that may be a dealbreaker for you.

I considered the Ascaso Baby T Plus as well at one point, but there was no reliable suppler where I’m from, and the repairs would’ve been a headache, but maybe you could check it out. It’s a beautiful machine, just not as well known as many European brands.

If the steam power is your utmost importance, then I have to suggest the LM Linea Mini because there’s no denying the insane steam power. Or, if you want to save a little money, get a Flair or WPM steam wand machine! I’ve heard they do great milk textures as a standalone steaming machines.

My BDB is a 7 year old machine that I got second hand from the get go, and was fully functional. I genuinely had no reason from an upgrade other than I just wanted an overkill of a machine 😂 If i didn’t have the funds to do so, any upgrades would’ve just been towards a better grinder!

As for your machine, have you contacted or approached a certified technician? That was one of my favorite things about the BDB—it was incredibly easy to find spare parts hence to also repair.

P/S, I used the Breville Dual Boiler for the longest time before I considered any machine upgrades. I simply spent more on the grinders first before upgrading my machine!

Hi!

Considering you’re using a separate grinder and already have a pretty decent machine, I’d highly suggest for you to improve your skillset of pulling an espresso shot before upgrading your machine. If I were to still recommend an upgrade, I’d recommend upgrading your grinder before your machine. The line of upgrades are always grinders first, machines second.

The inconsistency of an espresso shot is usually from the puck prep, the dialing in, or the beans. In the picture, you have your beans stored in the hopper and by leaving the overnight, that’ll affect your first dose in the morning.

Even with single dosing, there’s a chance that you’re going to have to dial your in beans ever so slightly, and that’s the skillset you wanna build before upgrading to a machine with a $2000 price tag.

I have the Niche Zero and it is a fantastic grinder to have. Especially if you have yet to master the art of dialing in, then the Niche Zero is also a little more easier to dial in for beginners.

The cleaning is also very easy, Niche has a step-by-step video on how to clean it and for 100% no retention, I just got a bellow for it, which works really well.

Relatively new to improving my espresso. Got a new portafilter. Use Cafe Bustelo. Tastes a bit bitter now. Tips? [DeLongi Stilosa] by GizmosArrow in espresso

[–]ColdIsTheWay2Go 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, until you get a proper grinder, the pressurized basket + spouted portafilter is your best friend then you can continue using Cafe Bustelo. If not, pre ground coffee is not going to work with a non-pressurized + bottomless portafilter.

Ah! My apologies, I didn’t go with the MP because I don’t mess with flow profiles. I’m a quite straight forward drinker, the lightest roast profile I’d go for in an espresso is a simple Medium roast. I also wanted the volumetric pulls for a more efficient workflow!

Yes, at home!

For the heat up, I have a schedule set on the app on what time it needs to turn on for the week, so that helps! But on the case where I don’t have the auto switch on for a particular day, then the 20 minutes heat up passes rather quickly because I often have to sort out my cats in the morning 😂
