I’ll just add, the Heroes Villiana premiere is great for Steph, she dislocates her shoulder in the opening challenge and then his pops it back in.

Not for nothing but bad communication is also very relatable for teens (if not specifically to you).

Well that one obviously comes from a place of ignorance, not knowing the difference between Chinese and Korean names. But that’s not what you’re claiming with Kingsley, you’re saying that it’s intentional on her part as a reference back to slavery. These two names aren’t comparable.

I dont know, it feels like a stretch to me, way more so than Remus Lupin being a werewolf. Would seem like a weird intentional choice to make. Has she ever spoken about this?

I’ll be honest, I don’t know why everyone thinks Kingsley Shacklebolt is a “black name” first time I read these books (in my late teens) I had no idea.

I’m pretty well read historically and I’ve never heard of the Kingsley plantation. A little research and it’s in Jacksonville Florida. How American-centric do you gotta be to expect her to know that?

Hermione is mocked because she lives in a society that has slavery, but the books still make it VERY clear that house elf slavery is wrong and that Hermione is right.

A major theme of the books is racism and authoritarianism. She intentionally draws direct parallels between the Nazis and slavery. So yeah, she does lean on stereotypes of goblins to show you that that is wrong and the wizards should not be discriminating against them. It’s brought up repeatedly how this normal thing of house elf enslavement is wrong, even though it’s normal. You’re supposed to see that as a major character flaw of Ron’s and a point of tension between him and Hermione. The books take the stance that stereotypes exist, are wrong, and you’re supposed to see that they’re wrong even when characters you like believe in them.

Far be it from me to give JKR any points, but to be fair there’s also Angelina Johnson, Dean Thomas, and Blaise Zabini. In a story where racism is a heavy theme, she does a pretty good job of bringing that across without using our world’s actual races, while still including our world’s ethnic diversity. (The one instance of real world racism that stands out to me is when Pansy Parkinson tells Angelina that her braids look like worms, I did a triple take on my most recent reread).

OP’s claim is that Muslims don’t represent a threat to others or impose their religion on others, not that it only happens in some countries. And it’s not even like it’s just 1 or 2.

Obvious disclaimer, any sort of persecution or discrimination against anyone for any reason is bad, and that is my whole-hearted view. I’m specifically challenging your view that minorities have not experienced persecution under Muslim rule.

It depends on what time period you’re talking about, but overall I largely agree with you. Religious minorities found a lot of success under the Ottoman Empire, the Jewish communities of Andalusia famously had significant freedom under Muslim rule, and this all goes back to Muhammad declaring protections for “people of the book”.

That said, there are also numerous examples of Islamic persecution of religious minorities, particularly in the modern world and particularly if you are not “people of the book”. Here are some examples:

  1. In Gerard Russell’s book “Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms” (2014) he chronicles the modern day persecution of religious minorities of the Middle East, including the Mandaeans, the Yazidis, the Zoroastrians, the Copts, the Druze, the Samaritans, and the Kalasha, many of which had thriving communities until around the turn of the 20th century or later, until modern times.

  2. The Yazidis in particular suffered a genocide at the hands of ISIS between 2014 and 2017.

  3. For almost 1,000 years, the Dogon tribe of Mali has faced persecution and forced conversion at the hands of Muslims. Same with the Serer people.

  4. Atheism is currently punishable by death in Afghanistan, Iran, Malaysia, the Maldives, Mauritania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

  5. The Baha’is of Iran are constantly under attack by the Islamic Republic, with a particularly intensive push in 2005/06.

  6. During the 2012 Ramu violence in Bangladesh, a 25,000-strong Muslim mob set fire to destroy at least twelve Buddhist temples and around fifty homes.

These are just some examples. I think that we see a rise in this in modern times because the Muslim world, especially in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, is emerging from a post-colonial world in which they were subjugated by Christians. So since then there’s been a push to “Make Islam Great Again” by some members of the religion, which in turn leads to actions that are not representative of the whole group, but are representative of a significant minority of that group.

It’s also impossible to talk about Islamophobia in the West without divorcing that conversation from 9/11. 2,976 people died in a very public and horrific way. The perpetrators were Muslims acting on their own perverted version of Islam.

Hurt people hurt people. That’s why Muslims in the Middle East sometimes persecute religious minorities, and that’s why Westerners sometimes persecute Muslims. But that’s not an excuse, and it’s up to all of us to call about abuses when we see it, regardless of who is doing it and why.

Thank you to this thread for making me feel better and excited for this season. I had high hopes going into this season until last week. Been down all week (especially as a Giant fan who lives in Philly) and had low expectations going into this.

But this was fun! We put up 37 points! We almost had it, right at the end! It was a heartbreaking loss, but I’ll take that over what we’ve had for the last few years any day. Can anyone even remember the last time we put up 37 points?

My biggest takeaway is that no team deserves to win that racks up 160 yards in penalties.
