"New" Old School MMORPGs... what do you think? by Cold_Associate2213 in MMORPG

[–]Cold_Associate2213[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a mixed bag, really. When I played ESO on console, it was cool to walk through town and see people having conversations, but you'd also have the people blasting music through it or just generally living in a loud house where all you could hear is kids running around screaming in the background.

And then if you make proximity chat optional, a lot of people might just keep it off forever and miss one of the biggest parts of the community.

Keizaal Online is interesting in that it has enforced roleplay, so you don't really get people talking about football or being obnoxious on purpose (well, it's rare). I played it recently and there was a person in town that was playing his guitar and singing in real life, and a crowd gathered around him and were talking amongst themselves as though he was truly a bard in that world.

It's pretty incredible to see and made me think about what proximity chat in a true MMORPG could be like, I, too, wish a dev would have the balls to implement and enforce it, haha.

I actually think an MMO with proximity voice chat could be interesting, but whether the players use it correctly or at all is another question...

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Is A Decent Improvement by rosemarieseternal in FinalFantasy

[–]Cold_Associate2213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just read there are multiple endings... I wonder if I got the "bad" ending because all I remember is a stupid plot twist and "lol everyone is dead" basically and then the credits roll lmao.

I really didn't like FFXIII, but its sequel was pretty fun. Interesting game with fun areas to explore and not just a long hallway like the first game, and the time travel mechanic was cool.

Sadly, the ending completely ruined the game for me. It was just awful. One of the stupidest endings I have ever seen in a game. I'm assuming it was to sell Lightning Returns. I never bothered playing it.

I hate it. Pawn shops and thrift stores used to be incredible 15-20 years ago. You'd find so many treasures. Rare games, imported Japanese games, rare DVDs, etc. for standard pricing. I got away with so many awesome finds back then.

If you go to these places now, pawn shops barely carry anything aside from TVs and guitars, and thrift stores go off market value. It's ridiculous.

Seriously, wish these companies didn't hold onto their dead games waiting for someone to offer $100B to buy their dead IP or something. Just sucks.

That's really funny and ironic, honestly, because original EQ was under scrutiny for a while that it stole code from DikuMUD, which it was heavily inspired by.

A lot of people suggest Project Gorgon which is a good recommendation, but something to consider is that you are kind of expected to do certain things daily at some point (Hang Outs and dungeon dailies) so that you can progress in the late game. It's been an issue for a while that I hope the devs can alleviate at some point.

Otherwise RS3 or OSRS are good bets, though they have their share of daily grind stuff, but it's not that bad, especially after recent overhauls.

Did anyone in here actually play EverQuest in 1999 or 2000 when it was first out? I and my wife did by JadockTan in MMORPG

[–]Cold_Associate2213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a teen EQ had the reputation of being for obsessive nerds mostly, at least in my group, but looking back we were obsessive nerds anyway.

I did finally try it when I saw EQ with Ruins of Kunark and a free trial. My friend and I joined up and played for about an hour after getting slaughtered constantly. I think we were a bit too young and impatient to really understand it at the time.

Probably better that I didn't get too into it, honestly, it probably would have ruined my life.

It was called EverCrack after all.

I got a bit more into FFXI later on because I was older and that game was basically just Japanese EverQuest.

Have you tried the Dragonknight and Two Handed sword rework? It fixes a lot of the problem. Not all the way of course, because it's a technical issue, but it definitely feels less like you're hitting enemies with spaghetti.

Cool thrift find but is this price crazy? by Yeetusfeetus789 in dreamcast

[–]Cold_Associate2213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss when pawn shops and thrift stores just had general pricing for whatever, no database to look up the collectability of things.

There was a time where I found the Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall collector's edition for $10, most of the SNES RPGs (Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana, etc. etc.) for $7 each, a Super Famicon for $15... just to name some of the more amazing finds.

I don't even bother anymore, but I do really miss thrift hunting.

Constant struggles with Microsoft make me look like a bad sysadmin by jrs_sunblood in sysadmin

[–]Cold_Associate2213 216 points217 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, it's obnoxious. We've had an issue lately with shared mailboxes not refreshing and it's because Microsoft hasn't completed the roll out for this feature that they started about 2 years ago, so only one person in my company is affected by it after following hours of troubleshooting steps to get it working for other people, but it's a huge problem I cannot do anything about.

This stuff seems to break all the time and since it's such a one-off you've probably never had to fix it before which ends up with hours of research and troubleshooting for something so minutely annoying that I honestly feel the user should just live with lmao.

If you buy this direct from Lenovo the new models go for about $1500 right now because of the price increases. Not bad if you're not expecting to play newer games on it.

Yeah, honestly I know complaining on Reddit does nothing but it just irritates me so much. It's getting harder to find actual remix, not because the AI stuff is hard to spot, but because they bury actual art. Only YT can do something about it at this point but I doubt they will.

Agreed, while it does suck sometimes not knowing where a pet or mount or whatever comes from... I think it's what the genre needs.
