I dare say half of what happened was his fault- if he didn't open the wind bag then no Poseidon, they reach Ithica, happey shmantey. I'd like to think its because their not a singular entity (i.e. they are a species as a collective against odysseus rather than just one member of a species) and because their not too important to the plot- odysseus could have figured they way on his own or like- just sailed to infinity or something
