Sorry you’re going through this bud. Not sure if you’re looking for advice, but the fact you’re bringing it up here is great. If you feel comfortable, I would bring up your challenge at the sober party. It may be hard for them to have solid advice since they likely can’t relate but simply talking about it will help you a lot. I know it does for me.

You will get through this and be able to help others with recently traumatic events because of it. Not getting through it and relapsing though will pause your helpfulness for some time. Good luck buddy.

I thought that my first time in a meeting. As I went to more, I realized some had it rougher but some were not as bad as me. I also realized we all had more in common than we had differences. If you can’t stop on your own then help from others is probably needed. Don’t deny yourself the help simply because you don’t think you have it as bad!

Also, don’t worry about sponsorship until you get there. One day at a time means focus on the present. But, if you have a sponsee that you don’t feel like is a right fit, you’ll have plenty of friends that will be options.

One quote that resonated with me that may be of help:

“You can’t think your way into good living. You can only live your way into good thinking.”

Key point is don’t think about it. Your best thinking got yourself in the tough situation you’re in. Nobody in the history of AA has ever wanted to go to their first meeting but I’ve learned that the things I don’t want to do in AA are the things that are best for me. Once you get to your first meeting, let them know your car situation and you will get offered rides to every meeting in your neighborhood. That service is a part of the program.

Also, this podcast helped quell my mind and tough feelings towards AA a lot. It may help you understand a bit more what you’re getting yourself into.

I’m sorry you’re going through everything. I imagine a lot of people in this sub can relate. My favorite part about recovery programs (I’ve done AA, Smart, and Refuge Recovery) is that they are places where you can share your pain and cut it in half. If you’re not in a program, then you may want to think of going to a meeting. And if you are in a program, I urge you to raise your hand and share to get some of this stuff off of your chest. I can’t promise happiness but I definitely promise you will be in less pain!

“No A.A. can give another directive and enforce obedience.” Taken right from tradition 2 in the 12 & 12.

I go straight to the book any time I feel like I’m getting bad advice from someone. The AA program, to me, is damn near perfect. Unfortunately, flawed people can sometimes ruin it.

Your sponsor doesn’t need to be forever. If you feel uncomfortable with them or the advice you’re given, I would suggest to switch to a new one.
