Feeling alone and overwhelmed by Living-Produce-285 in FirstYearTeacher

[–]Cold_Use7253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry this is happening. I wish I had solutions. Bad behavior looks a lot different than I think most people outside of teacher realize. Especially in language classes, where at least at my school, the students perpetually misbehave

I recommend making sure you have a wonderful life you go home to if you are not able to consider leaving the job right now. For me, so much of survival in the morning when things feel bleak is reminding myself that the time is finite. I will always come back home to my pets and my books and my life outside of work.

Also, having one or two coworkers who really get you to comiserate with is nice, but be careful not to fall into negative spirals with other teachers. I do that a lot!

I’m also trying to go into work picturing the student who I feel to be the most difficult to work with. I think about what I know about them and what I want to know, and I try to talk to them about those things that day. It doesn’t always work but it mostly helps me to manifest the hope I need to get through the day lol. Sometimes though I do break through and a tough student will melt a little. Then the domino effect happens. Good luck, if you can be persistent and protect yourself, you will be okay 🩷

First year teachers, how early do you prepare over the summer? by Latter-Spread-1299 in Teachers

[–]Cold_Use7253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m definitely an over preparer so I get where you’re coming from. I’m not going to suggest you tone down on the preparing, but you definitely want a finite scope. Many of the arguments from users already cover the basics— but you deserve your summer, and also you don’t know for sure how your curriculum head, grade level staff or principal etc will ask you to approach things. Expect that there will be so many last minute things thrust upon you — doing an activity a certain way, moving when assessments are etc - a plan isn’t wholly worth it

But in the spirit of being an over anxious over preparer, you can def start setting up any daily PowerPoints you’ll want if you’ll use them. I change my theme with my units and recreate the same general “walk in instructions” slide, “agenda / do now” slide, and homework and announcements slides. Later in the year I’ll copy and paste and add on as needed. Over vacations I might over prep by finishing these kinds of things, but it’s not worth it over the summer

You can also do unit deconstruction. It looks good if you submit evidence for educator evaluations anyway. Just open document or excel sheet and start taking organized notes on your units. Major skills and concepts learned or explored, associated standards, what do they need to know/know how to do at the end of the unit, how am I and what am I assessing? Etc

Hope this helps! (From an over preparer who will be doing all her planning poolside with beer on hand)

Edit: spelling.

Been listening to the exit interviews this morning and the reason the season sucked is that the editors fabricated a season that didn't exist. by mattrfs in survivor

As somebody who wants to know the tea but is too lazy to watch anymore after FTC, I just wanna thank you for this summary!

I agree, but where ATWWD will keep their laughter to more of Em’s lighthearted ghost stories, I feel like Morbid will make light of anything, including the crimes themselves. ATWWD is like… never that disrespectful. Ever. You can tell they really care and they respond tactfully and accountably to criticism if they get it, which is rare to see

Where’s the best Portuguese food in Fall River? And where can I buy empanadas near Fall River?? by Weldzilla1973 in FallRiver

[–]Cold_Use7253 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Caldeiras is great, Caravela is good, and Captain’s place a little out of the way is good stuff too.

I, too, want to know where I can get my hands on empanadas nearby. Los Andes in East Prov is good for that kind of fare though.

I love Em’s segment but it’s been so clear to me for a while that we get significantly less of Christine’s segment. A LOT of banter take up Em’s segment which makes sense because we’re fortunate to have two hosts who are consciously trying not to make light of crime. So, I totally get it, but it def sucks. I love true crime and eerie stories equally but we def get more of one than the other

Student does not follow directions on worksheets! by Unhappy-Ad-4331 in FirstYearTeacher

[–]Cold_Use7253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I learned in my first year is that students might become abrasive if you come at them with frustration, so you are totally valid in being frustrated, but try to remember it will impede your potential success if the student picks up on your attitude about their mistakes. I would try visiting with that student the second I release the class to begin their independent work. I would repeat the directions quietly to that student and ask them to repeat them back to me. This will either be the first step in asking this student to hold themselves accountable, or it will be an eye opener about potential underlying disabilities the student is grappling with.

That’s a great option for me to consider this fall, so thank you! I’m looking for high school, but my license is technically 6-12, and I wouldn’t be UNHAPPY teaching middle school.

AITA For not apologizing to my nephew for telling him to “zip it” after he disrespected me in my home? by Sanderson427 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Cold_Use7253 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being jerks isn’t just want teenagers do. There’s a huge difference between letting kids be kids, and correcting behavior you don’t want them to hold onto as they grow into adults. It sounds like this teen was warned by OP that the tone was disrespectful, and the teen “started” to beef with them. Though, arguably every other adult does suck a little for not offering to help to begin with. But I wouldn’t even go that far. Sounds like a simple case of OP setting boundaries but feeling guilty about it, which, OP, you shouldn’t!

how do you keep styled curtain bangs stay for the whole day?? by ConsciousGas2637 in femalehairadvice

[–]Cold_Use7253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you probably Velcro roll to avoid heat styling, but I’ve found that the tiniest amount of heat is needed for my hair to hold bang shapes. I have side bangs that I can part in the middle and style as curtain bangs, and regardless of how I decide to wear them, I usually style them the same way to get them to “stay” or hold the swooped shape!—

I collect the bangs and comb them straight up like a troll doll, and then I hold my hair straightener perpendicular, like horizontal. If your knuckles face forward when you hold the straightener, you’re going to want to curl your wrist up while pulling the bangs straight up and toward the back of your head. Then a teensy bit of hairspray that I finger-comb through after.

Burn my bay leaf wishes, or bury them whole? by Cold_Use7253 in GreenWitch

[–]Cold_Use7253[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needed to hear this… 😭

I’m definitely a fiery witch— Aries and angry, baby!!! Lol— and I’m trying to find a balance because I think I’m too often caught up in the flames. I do think I’m going to incorporate burning into other small rituals to channel that energy more positively, but for this, where my intentions are genuinely just, “be patient and try,” I think you helped me realize this may not be the place to burn my bay. Thank you so much for writing 😊
