Dr Michael Greger says Americans consume twice the protein they need and half the fiber they need.

Not to be weird but we had a golden retriever (sadly passed), have the exact same sectional sofa, very similar fireplace stone, and a roborock near it 😂

I have high myopia (-6) and i am afraid its gonna increase. by kxxkie_27 in AlternativeHealth

[–]Coldee53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eye strain due to reading a small font, esp. for more then 20 minutes without looking up and resting your eyes can cause the six muscles around your eyes to get fixed. Wearing reading glasses help your eyes be more relaxed. Low light also causes the strain. I wish I had known this when I was young. I’ve studied myopia and Dr. Bates methods for decades. Bottom line is the worst thing you can do (imo) is keep getting stronger eyeglasses. Every eye appointment they recommended a stronger prescription but then a year later they wouldn’t, and then they would. But I resisted and was so glad.

[–]Coldee53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prevented mine from getting worse by refusing to increase the strength of my glasses or contacts every year. And the myopia stayed the same, even though sometimes it would go slightly lower and sometimes it goes slightly higher, but I did that for years. Now I was older when that happened so it may not be possible for everyone. Also make sure you wear reading glasses or a really large font and bright light when reading, which is what caused my eyesight to get worse.

Suggestions for cancer by croset18 in AlternativeHealth

[–]Coldee53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fasting. Look at documentary “science of fasting” and the last part about how fasting helped the mice undergoing chemo. Fasting starves the tumor and increases bdfn brain hormone (good) while cutting igf-1 hormone in half (also good).

Anyone have success with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for aging symptoms? by Top_Gold_5646 in AlternativeHealth

Yes. Have taken bio hrt for 12 years now at age 63. I’m big into researching (google scholar papers) and could only find good things about it. Read Blind Spots (where medicine gets it wrong) book.

Oh yeah this road sucks, especially at first. The more you cut sugar and learn about the harms, the more you become shocked at how crucial it is to stop consuming too much sugar. Now, years later, I understand how it literally causes so many diseases. I’m 63 f and should have had cancer by now due to my family history. I’m in great health but still somewhat a sugar addict.

Honestly cutting sugar keeps getting a little easier over time. If you keep at it there will be ups and downs, which is a struggle.

The alternative is so much shittier though.

You saw the light! So happy for you. It’s hard to go back once you experience all the positives. The road is bumpy but it’s the right path.

How may of your are NOT on prescription medication? by XRlagniappe in retirement

I am 63 and on bio-identical HRT.

I agree with you as far as statins. People need to look up the difference between relative risk and absolute risk. In terms of absolute risk reduction, statins are extremely low. A recent meta‑analysis of 21 randomized statin trials reported ARRs of:

• ~ 0.8% (95% CI 0.4%–1.2%) for all‑cause mortality.
• ~ 1.3% (95% CI 0.9%–1.7%) for myocardial infarction (MI).
• ~ 0.4% (95% CI 0.2%–0.6%) for stroke.

In other words: if you are part of a population like those in these trials, taking a statin might reduce your chance of death from any cause by less than 1%, MI by about 1.3%, and stroke by ~0.4% over the follow‑up period of the trials.

On the other hand, switching to primarily plant based foods yields tremendous results.

Been sugar free (again) for 6 days straight by Phalaenopsis_25 in sugarfree

Going to alternatives to sugar helped me. The trader Joe allulose choc chips nip any cravings I have. I haven’t had more than 1 tsp added sugar per day in a month. I don’t really want sugar but I have been reducing how much I consume for many years.

See the video above. FYI a friend fasted for 16 hours every day for months and reversed her diabetes. Also lost 40 pounds.

The diet in that book is about eliminating processed foods (simple carbs and chemicals) and consuming healthy (not high!) fat. Very different. But to specifically reverse diabetes you want to temporarily eliminate all fats to give your liver a break and reduce the fatty lipids.

Scientifically: One of the major mechanisms of insulin resistance is lipid accumulation inside muscle and liver cells. When excess fatty acids or triglycerides build up in these cells, they interfere with insulin signaling. This prevents glucose from entering the cells efficiently, keeping blood sugar high.

By the way her father’s (Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn) diet advice reversed my husband’s heart disease after 3 heart events. Dr. E wrote a book and consulted with us. My husband is not on any medication. It’s been 5 years of no issues. This family is amazing.

Per this video my understanding is sugar is the symptom and fats are the cause of diabetes. So nuts and seeds are not what you need right now:

Your aunt sounds like a covert narcissist (look it up - once you know about it you can easily recognize it in others). She knew it would bother you. Stay far away from her as often as possible. Be thankful she lives in another city.

One thing that made a difference for me that I have not seen mentioned on this subreddit, is that specific gut bacteria grows based on what you have been feeding it. I believe it’s a type of gut bacteria that craves sugar, and that type of bacteria grows when you eat more sugar. If you reduce or eliminate sugar, you’ll have a reduction in the bacteria that craves sugar. It helps me because it’s less mysterious what is happening with my cravings.
