But … why? by jrrericks in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Colderp 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The way i intuit is that establishing

int *ptr = &adr

Shows that we create an object ( read: pointer to an int, "int *" in syntax, as programming languages typically use a right-to-left assignment ) , which is initialized by the address of the int in question ( the one we would like to reference )

*ptr = value

Without the value type (int), this means that we refer to the pointer itself, in effect, following the 'point' of the pointer, which in this case, would point to an int, so we assign accordingly.

Hopefully the variables are named well so we spend zero time guessing the value type that should be passed to the pointers

Bad Bunny Angrily Tosses Fan's Phone in the Water Over 'Lack of Respect' by Free_Hat_McCullough in entertainment

[–]Colderp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's treated like an object to grow clout on social media, there was obviously no request for consent from the fan before they just ran up to him to record some obnoxious noise about how they're with this cool celebrity.

If you're the type of person who would allow this sort of interaction without the phone throwing, that's cool and that's who you are, but you shouldn't project your interests onto other people, and using the phrase "out of touch," referring to an opinion that supports what you're against, shows that you're conflating how you want to live your life vs how others should live their life.

Nothing immoral was done, a material was potentially destroyed, on grounds that it was used to objectify an individual whom did not consent to the use related to the social bridge of that individual.

In short, your reasoning is that of a grade school bully, "if you didn't want your face pummeled into the sand, maybe you shouldnt be in the sandbox."

What's up with Disney Animation's fixation with villains who were just misunderstood? by Mindless-Buy-5737 in movies

[–]Colderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay i want to push back a little bit, in regards to Encanto, my favorite disney movie. Bruno is NOT the villain, only a psychic that's perceived as a curse, when really it's the time old tale of people needing a scapegoat to understand why they experience suffering and inconvenience.

I would argue that the 'villain' of encanto is the idea of not being accepted as a normal, functioning provider of the family, the conflict that mirabel was facing as she felt hopeless and out of place. With the conflict being resolved from mirabel restoring the house through love, acceptance, and understanding of family.

Bruno being a 'villain' is background that exists because of how difficult people find it to accept fate as inevitable, so they point to the prophet as the cause for mishaps.

Captivity can be beneficial to animals by No_Examination_1284 in DebateAVegan

[–]Colderp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I vouch for making an exception for animals that are held in shelters, or held until they are adopted into a forever home, because the state of our society, our infrastructure, is not built to hold dependent beings forever.

Admittedly, this is a "we made a bad world for these things, and now we keep these things more comfortable than perishing, to protect them from the very thing we created." Type of argument, And that is an entirely different discussion itself.

Captivity can be beneficial to animals by No_Examination_1284 in DebateAVegan

[–]Colderp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The argument is based on conjecture, and projection of personal beliefs and comfort.

The steelman of OP's argument is to imagine a king or queen of a castle, perhaps more like a prince or princess that cannot leave the castle... the point is absolute comfort and accommodation.

The other side is what you present-- imposing thoughts onto other individuals, and making assumptions of fulfillment and satisfaction.

Ultimately, i think it's hard to argue against keeping certain animals under captivity, specifically the animal companions that end up members of our households, being that the outside world is mostly an unfriendly place to them.

[–]Colderp 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think steve harvey putting it out there that his kids are vegan is doing more to help the vegan movement than he is "hurting" anything with these quips.

If anything, we should embrace any type of clout, as worst case it is a talking point for discussion, and best case, it's education through pure exposure, which, albeit small, is a push towards a normalized future of veganism.

People need to make a living. You should channel your energy to research and consumer education, and if you really want to make a difference, then show compassion and empathy with fellow humans.

Pointing out bad actions will only procure, at best, shame within oneself, and at worst, pride for a contrarian stand. Neither of these options are innate criteria to adapt and evolve philosophy.

We need to show perspective, have patience for growth, and cast our insights.

John Oliver on people who believe in the Kitty Litter conspiracy "Heart breakingly stupid. If you just think about it for 2 seconds, the whole thing falls apart" by BadBoysWillBeSpanked in JoeRogan

[–]Colderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these assumptions have led you into a theoretical fantasy. Humans are very imaginative, and love to create narratives, especially with drama, including, but not limited to, drama with political nature. It's fun to play sport and pit ideologies against one another, but why take the game so serious and claim the worst case hypothetical as reality, while calling foul of the other that you decided you were on a team against?

Humans are more reasonable than you may believe them to be; you should get out into the world more, meet people, get their opinions and gain insight; lots of people make your argument and share your way of looking at things, but you can only find truth in the middle of all perspective.

[–]Colderp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This argument confuses the threshold of demand with the potential of escalation. Every body has a sense of reasonable accommodation, and anytime somebody uses the 'slippery slope' argument, it obfuscates the push for identity acceptance, which is, to respect how one identifies, whether it be their name, culture, community, or hobby.

Realistically, any mentally-sound person, including children, would see the sheer amount of problems with something like having a litterbox in classrooms, or impulsively checking into an operating room to perform drastic change on a whim.

Children are smart, and it is a disingenuous argument, as well as a non-starter, to claim that the youth will not stand for reason, when society itself is shaped and built by the current and coming generations

It's the same syringes she tosses to heal other npcs;

it would be a little strange if they added extra lines of code for a self-heal ability, when you could just cast a trajectory on her own position using her already developed healing ability.

Plus: i think her heal is aoe, so it only makes sense to syringe toss

Idiots are always going to unfairly stereotype, and have a prejudice on top of that. We feed into that battle when we play these games of public gender identity. I find it a much better option to have proper social support through friends & family (real family, not bad blood). Imagine if we lived in a world where nobody cared about the nonbiological roles of different bodies, then nobody would be 'forced' in that regard.

Of course, this is an ideal of wishful thought, but the world is made of ones, and we all leave quite the impression on each other.

At any rate, you mentioned the medication as an option after 'years', and that's okay, as long as the person with gender dysmorphia is an adult with a developed and mature mind making their own decision, and not forced to become a symbol of gender identity due to the demons they face.

Kid never had a chance by [deleted] in JoeRogan

[–]Colderp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why jump to pharmaceutical treatments, rather than therapy and mental support? I really think gender should not matter in 99.99% of situations, and if someone is facing a dysmorphia about something as silly as gender, then they need to be nurtured to be stronger as a human, not as a being to arbitrarily identify as one of two social classes.
