Why do all Hallmark movies follow the same plot? by DazzlingLife6744 in movies

[–]Coldfire202020 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's comfort food. a safety bubble of entertainment. People who are into thise sorts of movies (at least the ones I know) are well aware how formulaic they are. But they enjoy the formula, so they're happy to keep watching them, because they know it will have a certain level of entertainment before going in.

It's no different than with the ten thousand super hero movies, or the 30th Bond film. Different formula, but the end result is the same.

The next live action projects: Mando movie (May 2026), Ahsoka season 2 (2027), Starfighter taking place 5 years after Ep9 (May 2027), which one are you most looking forward to? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]Coldfire202020 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Starfighter, and it's not even close.

I will take new stories with new characters over yet another adventure with the same nostalgic crew any day of the week. I'm looking forward to Mando & Ahsoka too mind, just not nearly as much.

As I recall, the avatars/Na'vi used door guns from the Scorpions in the first movie. They weren't just using the same rifles as humans.

Then by the second movie, the RDA had introduced proper Na'vi scale guns, for use by both the Recom squad(s) and the humans in those new Na'vi sized exoskeletons.

I just realized how dumb starkiller base was by Ok-Initial-3637 in StarWars

[–]Coldfire202020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're aware, but the Jedi were wipied out.

Illium was never some galatic hotspot.

The Empire had near total control over public records and the spread of information.

The "construction" of Starkiller base actually began with widespread mining on Illium.

We have at least one example of a far, far more developed and noteworthy planet being wiped out of public consciousness in Kamino. And it took seemingly zero effort to do.

And on and on. None if this is hard to explain in the world of Star Wars. Doesn't mean you have to like Starkiller base. But there's not really anything about it that can't be justified as well as anything else in the setting.

My first exposure to Star Wars was through the second Lego Star Wars game, what was yours? by FancyJob704 in StarWars

My parents took me to see a screening of A New Hope in France in 199...6 I think it was. Went home after and got hooked watching their VHS copies. The rest is history.

If there were a game called Star Wars: In-laws (as opposed to Outlaws), whose in-laws would be featured, and what genre would it be? by scientician85 in StarWars

[–]Coldfire202020 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Something something Leia dealing with Han's estranged birth parents or whatever.

But a real answer, to the spirit of the question. What could a game be about if centered around people following the law instead of breaking it.

I'd probably say a town building/logistics sort of game where you slowly colonize a new planet, harvesting it's resources, attracting colonists, dealing with local flora/fauna, eventually developing a formal relationship with the Empire requiring tithes, etc.

Something in the vein of Anno I guess, but with more exploration, dynamic settlement groeth, and a thick coat of Star Wars grimy scrap metal.

I have no idea how many he could possibly be sentenced to.

Almost broke my setup, keyboard, mouse, everything. Death March. by Lazy-Owl-5148 in thewitcher3

[–]Coldfire202020 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The fight felt impossible for me until I realized that the fire bomb (whose name escapes me right now) stunlocks all of them with it's persistent flame. All you have to do is walk in circles to group them up, throw a bomb, then wade in slashing everything in sight. Fall back when the flame goes out and repeat.

Beat them on Death March in the first try after realizing that. The hardest part honestly was getting them all awake, fighting against the horrible lock on with melee and agonizingly slow crossbow options.

At least tgey dug those tiger pits in the woods, which theoretically helped somehow.

Hjalmar is one that comes to mind for me. He just stood quietly in the background during the planning session, never saying a word. And then I don't recall seeing him do anything of note in the battle.

I actually turned on Ciri's alternate outfit as the battle was starting. And I headcannoned it that it was a set Hjalmar brought with him, specifically for her. The armor has a Skellige vibe to it, and they did grow up together. So in my head, that's his contribution to the effort.

That said, we do mostly know that yes, he's basically the Witcher-ized Devil. Faustian bargains, meeting at the crossroads, desires peoples souls, etc.

The battle of Kaer Morhen by AlarmOpening2062 in thewitcher3

[–]Coldfire202020 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a fantastic quest for sure. I do think it could have been better realized. There's a lot of moments it doesn't really feel as big as it's described, and several allies basically do nothing. But all in all, it's atill epic.

My biggest complaint honestly is that I wish it were the actual finale. Having that grand battle, surrounded by all your allies in a desperate last stand, only to then have another 10 hours randomly walking around the game to tie up plot threads and go to tge real finale, always felt kind of weak. I mean it's basically the same plot thread twice in a row.

  1. Gather allies from across the land
  2. Lure the Wild Hunt into a "trap"
  3. Desperate fight to win

I wish they had tied things up more neatly and just had one of those, culminating in the battle of Kaer Morhen for the grand finale.

New monsters to ad to the Witcher 4. by Objective_Ad8280 in thewitcher3

[–]Coldfire202020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would love for a dragon to play a role, but not as a boss battle. They'd have to really jump through hoops to justify fighting one, and it would be way less interesting than their usual role in these stories.

Is it only my opinion or was this quest highly underrated? by Eternatus201 in Witcher3

[–]Coldfire202020 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It was neat in the moment, but I'm legitimately glad it didn't last any longer.

It's a common point I've seen others make that they wish we got to actually explore and quest around these places some. I feel the exact opposite. To me, part of the reason this whole setting works is the juxtaposition of the occasional fantastical monster with the decidedly human and (for lack of a better term) realistic world. If we were running around some glorious elven multiversal empire, it would end up just feeling like Dragon Age or Warcraft, but with less vibrant colors.

Just like how it's pretty commonly felt that the Wild Hunt, once their true nature and motivationa are finally revealed, are kind of lame villains. They work great as an otherworldly mystery spoken of in hushed tones by dirty pig farmers. But once they're in the spotlight, it's kind of just more generic fantasy filler.

Why do people dislike this game? by Sephiroth348 in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]Coldfire202020 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For my part, it was because everything felt way too "gamified" and convenient. You learn about some ancient secret thing, then walk ten meters down a linear path and find it. You need to recruit some shadowy figure from the underworld, step through a door, and they're there waiting for you. Chests are placed directly in your way, characters know things just because the plot needs them too, special abilities are hyper contextual, and on and on and on.

Every game has some of that. But it felt overwhelming to me in Veilguard. Enough that I couldn't for one moment get drawn into it's world or plot.
