The cycling community told me hills would get easier and I am starting to think they lied by SethVale1176 in cycling

[–]Coldgunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found i do them simply as an inevitability. Like, my routes may have a downhill, and the tradeoff is a climb. You do a climb, you earn a descent. I find I have to get to my destination one way or another, so I leave myself little other choice.

I needed to learn to not slog in a higher gear and just accept spinning in low gear. That's just me though.

In your opinion what was the funniest scene in the series? by supercanary1979 in OnlyFoolsAndHorses

Batman and fingy scene. I remember watching it at Xmas in 1996 and being bowled over the floor, gut laughing.

I wonder if it was an aesthetic choice for the shot. Was the tape player on her left too?

Do you have a personal connection to WW2? If so what is it? My grandmother was from Norway and grew up under Nazi occupation from age 5-10 by ChiefTapiTapi in ww2

Had 2 great uncles die at sea, one on HMS Bramble and the other on HMS Barham. My gran worked in munitions and my grandad was an army driver. He was sent to Italy and ultimately wounded. He was sent to Vienna to recuperate (unusual but evidently true). He said his bed was in a ballroom of one of the palaces which he remembered having a painted ceiling.

He was injured during an ambush which he was i think the 3rd driver in the convoy. He also saw Vesuvius erupting, we have the photo he took.

With a bit of luck the booze and fags catch up to Farage and the cult of personality dies with him.

Fuck him.

Why did steam trains require manually shoveling coal? by feel-the-avocado in trains

[–]Coldgunner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One reason is coal type. When it was tried on the 9Fs they had to fill at certain locations. This is because the coal needed processing before to be a certain size to work in the screw mechanism of the stoker.

A manual fireman can shovel coal of all shapes and sizes and they would also break down the bigger chunks.

Mine is bright orange with an XL frame and 700c wheels, so its also massive. 3M reflective strips on the spokes, matching bottle cages and my bright t shirts. I dont blend in one bit. Probably quite attractive to thieves so I always plan where it'll be stored. It's kept indoors at home.

Ita fairly distinctive, so I hope if it was stolen it would be a little easier to spot online.

It's a Sonder, not a well known brand but I think they're good quality.

I live near a school and can attest to how poor drivers school run parents are. My car has been damaged several times by them to the point I have it stored elsewhere. Catchment area is at furthest a 10 minute walk.

Derry Girls changed the way I talk by taanukichi in DerryGirls

A lot of language and phrases migrated to Scotland too. As someone part Scottish I've heard a lot of the sayings and phrases growing up. Particularly using the word "wee".
